This place was a pleasant surprise. I did not expect to find a coffee shop the likes of which could be in Chicago or New York York in a small village in Alaska. Friendly service, tasty strong coffee, trendy music and eclectic decor.

Don’t waste your time, there is better coffee elsewhere. First coffee shop I have ever been to that told me I couldn’t be there unless I bought coffee-so forget about jumping on the WiFi to check an email. The barista is rude and unwelcoming. She told us to leave unless we were going to buy one of their overpriced items-funny thing is, not only am I not buying something so I can stay, I’m never buying anything here again.

Hello review readers, I bought a pitch pipe from here, only to get home and learn that it was defective. Like many of us up here, we do not live in the Anchorage area, thus my visits to Anchorage are saved for when there are enough things to take care of to justify the drive into town. Needless to say I did not get the pitch pipe tested at home and back in Anchorage within 7 days. This, I just learned, is the return policy for The Horn Doctor. Therefore, when I recently went into the store, told them of the defect, they tested the “D” on the piano, agreed it was not a “D” and responded, it’s outside the 7 day return window, there’s nothing we can do. There is something I can do…. warn others so that we can be careful what we buy here, as they are not willing to stand behind the products they sell.

I agree with the previous review, went to horn doctor, they quoted me $250-500 for my sax to be repaired. Took it to Music Man, $50 and a week later, the sax sings. How does this shop justify $250-$500 when another can do fix it for $50 blows my mind.

Humble but serviceable

Went from Anchorage to Seward, stayed 2 nights in Seward, and went back to Anchorage. On the trip down, I was enamored by the beauty. Every moment was beautiful, and we saw a moose among other animals. The train was super comfortable. We were in adventure class because that’s all that was available at the time. 2 seats per side. Lots of leg room and space. Seats recline some. It was very family friendly, but there’s also a bar where people respectfully get drinks. Lots of smiles. I was really cold (even though I’m an Alaskan AND I dressed in layers), so consider bringing an extra, extra layer.

On the way back, it was a little different. The train left at 6pm from Seward. It was still beautiful and roomy, but by the time we arrived in Girdwood, I think everyone aboard the train was very much so done! Most children 6 and under were restless, tired, and some were crying (quietly) if they weren’t totally passed out on the seats with their weary parents. By the time we got our bags off the train in Anchorage, it was after 11pm. Not a reason not to go, but something to take into consideration if you have littles.

If you care about COVID, know that masks are “required”, and the trains are operating at reduced capacity; however, there was zero enforcement once aboard the train on both of my trips. Masks were worn incorrectly more often than not, and often weren’t worn at all. As a vaccinated person, I sorta don’t care, but the train occupants were all travelers, very many of which are too young for a vaccine or older and at higher risk for severe disease.

Overall, would do again, but I think I would have skipped the return ride if I could have figured out how to get back to Anchorage. Worth your time.

I bought a $1000 acoustic that came with a free adjustment, cleaning and strings. I took the guitar in a year later and had to pay for strings. They said it’d be done early next week on Friday. I went in 2 weeks later and they hadn’t touched it. They said it could be up to a month to honor the free cleaning they promised. I just left with my strings and cleaned it myself.

Petr is taking advantage of being one of the few violin shops in town. He is charging $63.00 for a pair of d’addario helicore full size violin strings. You can find them online anywhere from $33.00- $38.00. I am all about keeping a small business alive and don’t mind an up charge to do so but come on. The strings don’t even come in the original packaging so he is obviously getting them in bulk. Give us a chance to support you Petr’s Violin Shop.

Editing my review since I can’t reply to the co-founder. I figured I’d expound on it.

TL;DR: This place is like an airport bar. Okay for a beer, then rightfully forgotten forever.

ORIGINAL:

I travel for work, and have been in breweries around the US and around the world. This is, without question, the worst. The beer is inauthentic, with no ties to an incredible place, a time, or local ingredients. The brewery is cookie cutter. The clientele look like the folks you would find at an REI clearance sale, complete with jeans pulled OVER unnecessary rubber boots and the most expensive and unnecessary patagonia jacket keeping them warm. If you want a yuppie beer at a place made by yuppies, for yuppies, with no tie to Alaska, this place is for you. As for me, I’ll look elsewhere.

NEW:

I stand by the original, and it’s thoroughly evidenced by the response from the co-founder. They misunderstand the concept of authenticity. Beer is about a time, a place, and the people around you. Great beer and a great brewery should tie you to all of those.

Example, I’m from Wisconsin, and if I moved to Amarillo, Texas, built a nice building with local craftsman and local supplies, and started brewing average beer with no local ties, I’m not anything authentic, and I’m certainly not anything Texan. No part of the brewery would be tied to the place besides the people that pounded the nails, and the building itself. The idea of the brewery is a farce and is essentially just a franchised idea of a brewery, adaptable to masquerade wherever I am. That’s this place.

In reading the response, the folks who started this place are basically outsiders and yuppies from the lower 48 who use “hunting and fishing and old school country music” as their evidence for why they’re local and match Alaska’s unique blend of eclectic wilderness and beauty. But, if you picked the brewery up, moved it to Aspen or Vail, and used things from those places to build it, it would be the exact same. It’s just a mountain/ski themed brewery. All they did was use things from close by so they could brag about it to the folks who ask, and defend themselves to people who call them out. I might not have noticed had I not been to 12 other breweries in the area that trip. All of them better. All of them unique. All of them tied to a place. All of them with at least a local name to their beers, a local ingredient, and a local story. The best this place could do at the time I was there was call their IPA. . . IP-AK. Maybe it was your offerings during that visit, but it was incredibly underwhelming. The IPA and the bourbon barrel aged beer could have been from anywhere. No reason to ever go back, and nothing to linger in my mind to cover the disdain for a place built by folks who wanted to put up an air of authenticity while being wholly inauthentic. Paradoxically, perhaps the fragment of authenticity comes from that very concept. Considering much of the surrounding area is just rich outsiders buying a piece of Alaska and trying to masquerade as Alaskan, this is dead on match. That, you authentically nailed.

I will add this for people who made it this far. If you’re seeking a local experience with Alaska’s unique blend of eclectic style and wilderness, go elsewhere. Make the drive to Bear River in Wasilla or St. Elias Brewing in Soldotna. For the most authentic experience I had touring breweries and experiencing Alaska local flair, go to Bleeding Heart in Palmer. Denali Brewing in Talkeetna is beautiful and the beer is solid, including some made with local chaga. Midnight Sun has an incredible mix of different beers.

If you’re elsewhere around the US, go the New Glarus Brewing in Wisconsin, or Brewery Vivant in Grand Rapids, or Odd Side Ales in Grand Haven, or Lost Forty in Little Rock, or La Cumbre in Albuquerque, or Three Floyds in Munster, or Sweet Water in Atlanta, or Blue Blood in Lincoln, or Boothbay in Maine, or Able Ebenezer in Merrimack. Go places with amazing stories, great beer, and good people. Basically what I’m saying is, go literally ANYWHERE else.

Ivan is the only place I bring my guitars and basses to in Anchorage. They always come back playing better. I do my own work on inexpensive instruments. But for the nice stuff, I prefer the piece of mind that comes with a true craftsman’s work. Totally worth the investment.

Ivan is also a wealth of knowledge about music gear, everything from Martin guitars to Fender basses, from guitar pedals to recording gear.

Kind of middle of the road on these guys. They are great at customer service but have a limited selection, especially for bass guitars and not a lot to offer in the way of begginer instruments. Though they often have really nice wuality merchandise, they aren’t the best option if you are looking for a “deal.” Though please consider i only visit them 3 or 4 times a year and they do usually assure me they usually have more in the way of merchandise options. It’s not been my experience on my occasional visits.

Purchased a guitar and amp with all of the accessories for a new player. Upon picking up the guitar, the amp I picked out was sold, and another amp was put on the table with no explanation of where the other amp was. The amp was a decent brand, so I didn’t say anything, and the amp was also new. After using the amp, I had significant issues that I had to troubleshoot. Nothing worked. I returned them amp and explained what I had done to troubleshoot, and they did not want to look at it. I asked for the original amp I picked out, and the staff became angry and aggressive. I attempted to calm things down and solve the issue, but then they gave me the amp that I had originally played and asked me to leave. I will never return.

We camped for a total of three nights in August 2019. We were made very welcome and had a great time panning for gold!

We got to this place too late to do any panning, but we did walk around and snap photos. We were charged a discount rate, which was cool. It has a very nostalgic feel. Well worth spending some time here.

This is a “Must See” for anyone visiting Alaska.

The old mining camp is well preserved and the surrounding grounds are well maintained & beautiful. Trails to the mining areas is not a difficult walk from the main camp and the trails are well marked. Shovels & tools are provided if you don’t have your own. They offer instructions if needed. They provide military discounts.

Beautiful location – picturesque. The panning for gold was fun but there’s not much beyond that. Getting there requires some dirt road driving so be ready and be cautious if it’s muddy. Super friendly people.

It’s difficult to understand some of the (-) reviews on here. This place is a rare find. The mining camp is interesting and gives a great view of times gone by. The few people we saw were having a nice time. BUT, don’t let anyone tell you it’s an easy trail down to the creek. It is ok if you’re in moderate shape but you must be careful on the wet rocks and muddy trail and not fall down. If you are obese or have heart, or knee/joint issues, it will be difficult at best. Nonetheless, it’s a cool place if you like history and the surroundings are beautiful…it’s Alaska.

This place by itself is decent. You can see old houses of miners and take a walk to reach the serene creek where you can relax.

That said, panning for gold here is an absolute waste of time, money, and energy. Two of us spent 50 bucks together to spend all our time getting our hands dirty for finding gold whose value would be around 50 cents. We really regret it and wish we’d spent the time seeing all the houses, strolling and relaxing at the creek instead of lugging buckets and shovels around on a relatively hot day.

If you must learn about panning for gold, I suggest watching others doing it or choosing the activity for one person per group.

TL; DR: Don’t recommend the mining/any activity here for that matter (just not worth your while). Just pay the entry fee and take a walk at your own pace and enjoy the old houses and the creek.

Location is great. But they gave us a sample to look for gold in it.

I found fake gold in the sample. After 2 weeks gold was dissolved.

The scenic part of the experience is fantastic and breath taking, but if you are going to find gold… Good luck!

The food was excellent and, because there are few options in Girdwood, we went there twice for dinner. First time we waited a LONG time to be seated due to under-staffing. Drinks were good and the head waiter was especially personable. Overall a positive experience.

Basically this place is an expensive McDonalds. I ordered the English burger, which is a bacon cheese burger. The only thing fresh about it was the poorly sliced onion and hydroponic tomato. The patty was definitely frozen, even though they “grind their own beef,” and then cooked because the waitress did not ask how I wanted the patty cooked. When I got it it was that brown/grey color you get from fast food restaurants. The bun was a king Hawaiian roll, but it was not toasted. The fries were the pressed formed potato steak fries you see at fast food places. My husband got the halibut, which again was a formed pressed square breaded and frozen, so while it’s the “local” fish it was the same processed fish you can get in the lower 48. If you’re looking for fresh and local, this is not the place to go. It’s basic small town USA bar food.

We showed up at approx 715pm. We asked for any room possible for 4 people wanted beer and pizza. Honestly think we were polite. We were told 10 minute wait multiple times. Now I understand covid BS and busy and holiday weekend. But after 45 minutes, watching 3 families leave, and us standing outside waiting, and then be told tables reserved for larger paries!? I’m sorry but terrible service. Esp to locals. Sad really. Rant over.

The bacon wrapped dates were terrific and that was it. We were so disappointed in the entrees that we couldn’t believe it considering all the good things we had been told. We were on an spontaneous trip to Girdwood and we had been told several times by friends and strangers that this was one of the best restaurants in Alaska . . . I hope not. The location and ambience was nice and we were enjoying ourselves but the service was slow, really slow and the restaurant was not half full. Then we found ourselves fighting off mosquitos while we enjoyed our drinks . . . we were sitting inside. Oh it should be mentioned that the mosquitos problem persisted all night. My girlfriend ordered the bouillabaisse and I ordered the lamb. I wish they tasted half as good as the presentation. The lamb was of the worst I’ve ever eaten. The texture was fine but the flavor was awful. The best description of the bouillabaisse is that it tasted exactly like we remembered spagettios. It was so gross. At $120 this was one of the most disappointing restaurants we’ve eaten at in Alaska and if your friend recommends this place then your friend has bad taste.

These guys are great, simple as that. Very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. I will definitely be doing repeat business.

Accused me of stealing my first time in the store, because of the age I supposedly look. Even tho I had items on the counter, and clearly was ready to pay. Not real great service in general. Rude. Won’t be back.

Avoid this place of possible. Since they open at 12 o’clock I sat there till one o’clock and they had yet to open I get the whole musician hours thing but. Not opening for an hour there’s no excuse besides pure laziness. I refuse to give such a business my money and you earn this one star.

Do not buy a guitar from this store unless you know 100% what your buying is worth what your paying.

I needed a guitar and when there

Payed 300 for a guitar came to find out it was a 75$ guitar from wall mart

Refused to do any return and stated to me

“ that’s just the way we do busyness”

I replied that he had lost a customer and if he continued to do busyness this way it would catch up with him.

Just a heads up.

This place will get you if you let them!

G makes hands down the best crepes you’ll ever have. I’ve lived off them at music fests, and just supper at the brewery. Fantastic food EVERY-TIME..

Crepes De Paris AK is one of my absolute favorite food stands ever. Deliciously made, large portions for a good price. Many amazing options, savory and sweet, my personal favorites are the pizza crepe and the Basil pesto with chicken. And one of the best things about them is they make Gluten Free crepes! As someone who can’t eat gluten, it’s always a little saddening to see all the foods I can’t eat at the fairs, but praise be because Crepe De Paris has DELICIOUS GF crepes that I absolutely adore! Honestly I wish they had a year round restaurant location because I would eat there all the time!

Tasty, but not $10 tasty. Pretty skimpy serving. Ordered a Ghirardelli Chocolate Strawberry Crepe – good, but seems like they cut 3 Strawberries, Sprinkled a little Powdered Sugar and a little generic chocolate syrup.

I waited around 15-20 minutes. I understand if there were a lot of orders to fulfill, but the food wasn’t even that good. I got a pizza crepe and the cheese was undercooked. It wasn’t even melted and it was still in those pre-packaged shreds form. In addition, they gave me these very blunt wooden knifes that were so difficult to cut with. Bad experience bleh not good

Just left the Crepes de Paris at the Blueberry Festival where I ordered the Basil Pesto Tomato Crepe. After waiting 25 minutes for my order where they served the people that ordered after me…so I asked “where was my crepe?” When I finally received it they refused to give me any utensils and refused to give me a to go container/foil. So my mom went and got it while the short woman with the glasses got upset. As we left there I started wondering why was the service so terrible even after I ordered everything and I hope this was not racially motivated since everyone else was treated better. I will not be coming back here again and other people of color should stay away from there.

Not very impressed with the day lodge, they had no food service on a Monday during February and that seamed like a needed thing. Since that was not open there was no napkins cups or silverware. Got a soda out of the vending machine and it was very warm. Just not at all impressed.

Only one place inside the daylodge to get food, and its ridiculously priced and not very good. There are no other places nearby that have food except the bar. Locker rentals are overpriced.
