The owner Steve, is such an incredibly nice person, that loves music and sees each customer as a fellow lover of music. I believe this is why Steve has an incredible musician like Greg Koch demo the guitars online putting the instruments through the paces (listen to Greg’s solo work too, WOW). He wants people to hear and see the difference in the instruments and amps he carries.
I have lived locally for the past three years and been to this store dozens of times and Steve and I have had a conversation nearly every time I have been in the store. By the way it probably took nine or ten times before I made my purchase, it wasn’t because I bought something that he was nice. He is like that with every person that walks in the door! I am sad to say I am leaving Colorado this month, and I am most sad that I will not be able to visit the store and my friends at Wildwood in person.
During my conversations with Steve, he explains some of his musical philosophies. Every guitar style will force you to play it a little differently (Les Paul versus PRS, Teles, Strats, Semi hollows, Acoustic Grand Auditorium vs. Dreadnought, etc.). They all inspire me to play in a different way and get a different tone. However, it is also the visual aesthetic of the guitar that can inspire you to play different styles of music. The Wildwood family takes detailed pictures of the exact instrument you will be buying online (no stock pictures like other music stores where your guitar may arrive different from the picture). This is why you should look at the website. Walking in the store, you can say give me a Les Paul, and the staff will show you the back room. You will be blown away by the shear number of Les Pauls they have in inventory alone. They cannot possibly display every guitar they have in the showroom and the Les Paul the staff may pull out for you to play may not speak to you visually as it may to them. This is why every guitar is photographed in high res. No surprises. So look at the guitars online and request the exact instrument you want to try out by giving them the online serial number. I recommend a couple to compare and contrast.
Steve sells primarily U.S. built instruments and wants to support the economy here in the states and the U.S. music industry. Additionally, Wildwood sets up each guitar before it heads out the door to exacting specifications. If you have a dream guitar by a U.S. manufacturer, I highly recommend you see these guys in person or online. I can’t imagine you will ever be disappointed. I have vowed to only buy from Wildwood (unless it is a piece of gear they do not carry).
Since COVID however, the buying experience from them has faded considerably and I’m afraid that they have become another Sweetwater. I have tried to communicate with them and have supported them with strong appreciation and customer loyalty only to feel like just another customer. Customer service, tech service, appointment scheduling is now geared towards online sales and true customers that highly value the buying experience have been ignored. I have referred countless new customers to them and feel as though my staunch loyalty to this brand has gone unnoticed/ ignored.
Sadly, I have recently began to branch out and my last few purchases have not be with WW. I hope they continue to sell top notch instruments and am still hopeful that they can correct these issues and reach out too old school customers too.
You see, I used to go down to the shop as I only live about an hour up the road. Life happens you get busy and lately it’s been over the phone and online as free shipping and a lesser tax rate is better for me. I dealt mostly with Steve, Bruce and then Lance the last couple of times and they are all good people and made sure I was taken care of no matter in person or on the phone. I wanna say that after every conversation I have every had with Steve he makes you feel like a King and I know it’s not just for me as I have witnessed him many times treat everyone that way.
So why am I frustrated? It shouldn’t take 4 days to get a guitar in a box and out the door. I spoke with an Ian on day one to be informed that it was scheduled to ship in 4 days and if I wanted it by Christmas I would have to pay for extra shipping. I was with a customer on the side of the road helping them not be stranded so I quickly told him I didn’t need extra shipping and left it at that as I needed to get my work done. Day 2, I emailed to try and get a better understanding and dealt with a John that simply offered up excuses and just wanted to tell me how busy they were. So I got to thinking about all this and emailed them to cancel the order. I got an email back that now I was being pushed ahead of 11 other customers and the guitar would go out a day earlier if I didn’t want it set-up. This got me thinking even more, and I even wondered about the fact that this Tele was a very inexpensive guitar by their standards so maybe that’s why my order was being pushed back for some reason.
I’ve heard rumors that ownership has changed. I don’t know. I do know if Wildwood has become so busy that It takes them 4 days to put a guitar in a box and ship to a long time local customer an hour away they don’t need my business anymore.

My 11 year old has been working with Jerry on the piano for about the same amount of time. Previously we tried 6 months of online/zoom piano lessons that focused primarily on ear training. Jerry has transitioned my 11 year old to reading music, paying attention to dynamics and tempo. The progress has been rapid and altogether astonishing, but the best part is my kid is looking forward to the next lesson, Jerry is able to make challenges fun and worthwhile. I especially enjoy when he introduces music outside of the normal lesson book, to show, for example, that a Satie piece really is accessible and you don’t always need cartoons on your sheet music. Again, I could not be more pleased with our experience.
