I love this place. Ms Joe is awesome and Jamie ruckstyles is an amazing violin teacher. she is so patient and caring. would most definitely recommend her if your child is interested in learning the violin or any instrument.
The best teacher for piano is Jo
They do not have much of a guitar selection, but they do have other things.
Just ok
They are very friendly
Not answering your phones while your shop should be open is a horrible way to run a business. There’s no option to leave a message either.
If you want to speak with someone condescending, rude, and extremely stuck up, you’re calling the right place. I was calling to get information to rent an instrument for my sons new orchestra program and I was not only insulted by an employee, but the owner herself. If you are not an uppity brat, this isn’t the place for you.
They told me that the item I wanted was in stock. When I got there it was gone. In stock doesn’t mean 1.
3. Music Source
Address: 33113 US-45, Grayslake, IL 60030 , Wadsworth , Illinois , United States
Great store and lessons as well. My son has been in drum lessons from over a year. Tony is a great teacher and very patient.
Nice smaller store. Bob is very friendly.
Violin instructor was very knowledgeable. She adjusted to a different style of teaching to better suit my child. The shop is clean and the people who work there are very kind.
Why would I come here to buy $21 Elixir Strings when I can get them for $10 on Amazon? Are these even elixirs? I am 2nd guessing because the seal was ripped and the bags are crinkled inside. I feel like I was ripped off here, do not come here for your strings maybe they are knowledgable, but definatley sketchy.
sad to have to change my review but after having dealt with this store more it seemed necessary
Reviews show that they are open but I cannot seem to find the correct times they are open I tried stopping in on a Saturday around 3 website and google said they were open. But they weren’t too
Bought an over priced patch cable to find out it doesn’t work.
Store staff are incompetent. Ordered books and instruments accessories for me but instead of holding behind the counter they just put them on the shelf for others to buy. Waited two weeks and when I got there only one of the three things I ordered was available. There is a reason mom-and-pop shops like this are going out of business. They have no customer service. Added to which the staff were rude and had a lack of knowledge that was sad.
Was looking for a specific pair of drumsticks that I needed. I walked in and took a look at the selection they had, and they didn’t have what I needed. I asked a staff member if they could help me out and he helped me figure out what pair I needed. He happened to be the drum instructor. While trying to find the specific pair, my mother who was with me told me that he made her feel uncomfortable because of the way he acted towards her. When they “ordered” it for me and they said it’ll be here in a week.
One week later, I called to see if it had arrived. They said no. I stopped by the next day to see if it arrived and the same instructor said they’ll stop by tomorrow and pick it up for me. (From whatever warehouse they get their stuff from). The next day, guess what? THEY DIDN’T HAVE IT.
Unbelievable service. Waste of time and effort. I ended up going to A-Major Music in Gurnee. Trust me, it is worth the drive and they are MUCH more friendlier and helpful there.

5. The Shanty Restaurant
Address: 38985 US Hwy 41, Wadsworth, IL 60083 , Wadsworth , Illinois , United States
Loved the Shanty! The food was delicious. Oysters Rocheafella were amazing!
Nancy served us well and the Smoked Salmon salad was excellent.
With all the new improvments. I believe they have figured out what this part of our county has so badly needed. Thanks for that.
Good food. A little pricey. Nice atmosphere
Really nice place
Great food, large portions, love the bread. Service was good. Price is very steep, although portions are good. Had to wait an hour to get in.
The hamburger was to well done. Took them awhile to get the order correct.
The food is always great here and the place has a great atmosphere. This week we went here again for dinner and the waitress was the worst I have experienced here ever. She made it clear she was having a day and it showed in her service. When your in the hospitality industry you put on a smile….always! or just stay home. The customer should not have a bad experience because you are tired, don’t feel like working or what ever the issue is. It should be left at home. We will be back because the food is A+ but I will request another server next time if we end up with this individual. The business should not suffer because of it’s employees. There is too much of that already.
Service was poor at the bar. This is the 3rd time I’ve gone and each time, they are very slow to wait on me. Not sure if it’s because the plexy glass in between the chairs, and they don’t see me but service was not good for me 3 times in a row.
We bought our daughter a clarinet and one of the finger valves wasn’t working properly. We brought it back and the guy said they would fix it for no charge, but it would take a week. Within a week, it was in perfect working condition. Didn’t pull the ‘buyer beware’ card, didn’t ask us if we broke it, or charge us for the repair. Excellent customer service.
Amazing shop there are many used drums and other percussion for very cheap and are good quality. The used percussion are in very good shape, sound great, are affordable, and I would highly recommend this place for buying drums. Also, the staff were very nice so this place is amazing. We rode 30 mins to get here and it was worth it. I got an amazing snare and an amazing hi-hat for only $80!!!
Will return
Great staff, great selection prices are a little high but overall great experience.
Had a mostly nice experience. One of the team members made eye contact with me and then turned his back to me when I came up to the counter, which I found extremely off kilter. Then when I asked if he had a drum mount, he wouldn’t come to the floor to help me look and said it’s somewhere on a rack but doesn’t know if they actually had one. I feel bad because I had intensions of buying one along with a splash but received no service from him so I had to go to Guitar Center afterwards. Now, on the other hand, the other team member helping multiple customers at once, finally got back to me and was cheerful and quick. He even carried a pretty heavy amp out to my car as I had my little ones with me. That guy was great. If you get him, you’ll have a great experience.
The good reviews must be from friends or they work there. The negative are on point. Overpriced, and when trading in something give you the worst quote for your item.
It’s hit or miss when talking to the people that work their, especially concerning trade in value. The used gear is priced like it is new.
Playing make believe with phony mask requirement. Tell me, is there a difference when air is forced out the bottom, sides or higher in the air out the top of a mask than a casual release of breath forward while not obstructing your oxygen? Spent nearly $1000 a year ago and showed up with a $2500 dollar guitar ready to buy a new tube amp. But I guess treating people like dirty animals is good “health” policy now. As of this review, even based on admittedly contrived fatality numbers you are still 10x more likely to die in a car crash this year. Likely will not be back as a matter of principal, as I cannot support those that participate in the destruction of our society and country.
10. FYE
Address: 6170 Grand Ave Ste, Gurnee, IL 60031 , Wadsworth , Illinois , United States
This establishment always has items that catch my eye. Whether that be vinyls, CDs, or unique items such as the Handi-Pandi ( a panda that you can put on your hand #worth
Great place to find out of the ordinary stuff
Every employee I’ve come across at this FYE has been funny, cheerful, helpful & knowledgeable!
Found an obscure video from 1986, (don’t ask which one, it’s almost embarrassing). Had to jump on that deal before I never see it again. Great store, friendly and knowledgeable staff
Great variety but prices could be better.
Really really expensive. But if you search they do have some decent deals. I miss the one that was in Peru Illinois.
Over priced junk you can get online for 30% less.
Misleading with their prices and just assume you wanna be a member to tac on another 15$. They need to hire better people at this location.
Poor business practices. My daughter thought she was signing up for a rewards type program and didn’t know she would be signed up for magazines that she didn’t want and would be debited from her account. You can’t cancel the subscription directly with the magazine it has to be done thru FYE. After I explained to the bank that my daughter used her debit card to make a purchase at a brick and motor store not online they agreed this isn’t right. And at no time during the transaction was she told she would be signed up and charged for magazines, it apparently is in fine print on the back of the receipt. We canceled her card as this boarders on fraud. She authorized a 1 time transaction for goods she was purchasing in store nothing more.
11. Offbeat Music Store
Address: 3 S Old Rand Rd, Lake Zurich, IL 60047 , Wadsworth , Illinois , United States
The staff here is very friendly and knowledgeable. Nick has done a terrific job of repairing my guitar, and helping me find new guitar brands within my budget. A great music store for a musician of any level!
Great used vinyl selection.
I’ve taken guitar lessons at Offbeat and purchased a great quality electric guitar (Sterling by Musicman) for a great price several years ago. Nick upgraded it with new pickups, knobs, and tuners and it’s even better. Also picked up an amp at Offbeat and always leave satisfied. Jim and Nick are great!
Friendly people
Music store with a nice selection of instruments. Some vinyl and CDs too, although it has very few, if any, hidden treasures. 2 stars removed because the one employee and 2 of the customers were not wearing masks when I visited. I would have spent more time and money here if they were. Stay safe, everyone.
I was very dissatisfied with this location as they don’t offer any instruments that would allow the user to produce the sounds of Echolocation
12. Family Piano Co
Address: 114 S Genesee St, Waukegan, IL 60085 , Wadsworth , Illinois , United States
Very responsive! Brendan was a great help providing instructions on how to enhance our piano and player system.
This place is just a musician’s dream. Whether it be in the lessons and tutoring performed there, the many live and wonderful performances done there (I personally have been to a number, never once being disappointed), or the actual repairing or selling of pianos (which they are incredibly knowledgeable in), this place is the only one of its kind. The homey atmosphere and friendly service make are a true joy. For any musical needs, this is the only place like it in the area
Fun and friendly cafe! Very city friendly and oriented.
The service is amazing.
I’m Sofia Gorodetskaya director program Fun w music June 10 my students had a concert, Family piano is a wonderful place , great people help a lot and make video for every students. Thank you very much Family Piano Alice,Brandon,Tony and Drew. Some students buy a very good piano w so good price . Thank you very much.
Terrible lugar!!! No tienen repeto por el tiempo de la gente y son poco profesionales NO LO RECOMIENDO
If you want a wide selection of brand new Kawai pianos and a great deal this is NOT the place to go. I repeat…. This is NOT the place to go. Brendan tried to take advantage of me when I was in search of a brand new Kawai GL10 or K500. I had a few pianos I could trade in. One of them being a hand built Charles R Walter in pristine condition. He thought I did not know how much trade in value my hand built in U.S.A Charles R Walter had so tried to low ball me. I talked to other dealers (non local) and they all offered well over double what Brendan offered for my Charles R Walter as trade in credit for a new Kawai piano. I already knew the value of my Charles R Walter and showed Brendan how two other Kawai dealers had offered more than double what he offered so he magically added one grand trade in offer to the Charles R Walter which was still much less than what two other dealers offered.
I wanted to support their local Kawai dealer since they are nearby and but I got a bad feeling when talking with him. He is a very shady salesman. On the day we had scheduled to go buy a brand new KAWAI K500 he messaged me cancelling since he got covid. I emailed him wishing him a speedy recovery and he simply ignored. Extremely unprofessional. I then decided to drive out to Cordogan’s PianoLand in Geneva (much further) and they matched what other dealers had offered for my trade in and gave me a much better deal on a brand new Kawai grand piano. Glad brendan cancelled since I was able to find a much better dealer that provided a more pleasant and transparent experience. If you want a great experience go to Cordogan’s PianoLand.
13. Music Center Inc.
Address: 7700 Green Bay Rd, Kenosha, WI 53142 , Wadsworth , Illinois , United States
My husband bought my Martin there, I have taken my Ltd Edition Wildcat there for servicing (though it was not purchased there) and the luthier did a phenomenal job and they didn’t snub me for not purchasing it there. Buy much of my equipment & music there and send my husband back when he needs a gift idea. HE loves that they never charge the price it’s marked at as it’s always lower!!
Great staff. Everyone is helpful. Prices are fair. Family run and owned. That will always beat out big box stores like Guitar Center or online stores. Family focus making America great again.
I had driven past this place for years, thinking it was a relic from the 90’s with boutique prices/attitudes. How very wrong I was. I am so happy I finally checked it out.
My first visit was just to see what they carried and to do some snooping around. Everyone was very welcoming and helpful. The vibe here is much more friendly/relaxed than that of, say, Guitar Center/Music Go Round/Mars music (haha remember them?), etc. After my initial visit I knew I’d be coming back.
Eventually returned to get some tubes for my head and a replacement head while there. Todd was extremely helpful and dedicated a great deal of time and effort towards finding me suitable goods. Very knowledgeable across all parts/brands.
If you haven’t given them a look, you should. I will definitely return.
Ok, They responded and are willing to fix the issue I was having with servicing. I appreciate that.
Bought my Yamaha guitar here, am now taking lessons from Matt. So far, so good!
I brought my guitar in to get some fret buzz fixed, super simple. It was already adjusted for “Drop” C tuning. Take note of the word drop. I get a phone call saying my guitar was ready and tuned back to E standard. I told him I had it already set up for Drop C and he said he’d tell the tech and give me a call back. When I got a call back, he said the tech adjusted it back to C. I pick it up a few days later and bring it back home to find it adjusted and tuned to C standard and not Drop C. There was probably miscommunication between the caller and the tech, but next time I prefer not to play middle man with someone and maybe talk directly to the person who’s handling my expensive equipment.
I bought a mic system because I was under the impression that it was 100% wireless based off how the salesman explained it to me. Got home & looked at it, it has to be plugged up to an outlet. Defeated the purpose that I CLEARLY explained to the salesman. I tried to return it and apparently there is some “law” in Wisconsin where they can’t accept returns on mics, even if you haven’t used it. Nothing was done to help me. $380 wasted.
Buyer Beware!
We needed to purchase a recorder for our son’s grade school music class. We have one at home, but couldn’t find it so we went to Music Center to buy a replacement. We drove 30 minutes to the store and all they in stock had was an expensive wooden one and none of the $10 plastic ones we were hoping to find. I wasn’t interested in paying that much money for a recorder for a young child, but salesperson was very persistent in talking about sound quality, uniqueness and durability of a wooden recorder, supporting local businesses, etc. I told him that we didn’t care for the high price, but were in a crunch and we would take it. After hearing about how we couldn’t find my son’s plastic recorder and convincing us to purchase the expensive wooden recorder, he conveniently failed to mention that this type of product is not returnable. When we got home later and found our son’s plastic school recorder in his closet. A few weeks passed and I went to return the expensive, wooden recorder and was told by the same salesperson that they couldn’t take it back due to health department regulations. I explained that the recorder had never been used or even taken out of the original package and that no one told us about the no-return policy at the time of purchase. We definitely wouldn’t have bought the expensive wooden recorder, knowing that it wasn’t returnable. After some grumbling on my part, the salesperson went in the back to check with the owner, but the answer was still no.
The entire situation is very frustrating and feel that Music Center took advantage of us and ripped us off.
I had rented a keyboard, an amp, and some cables for my wedding in July. Unfortunately, the equipment came with some issues.
-The Output jack on the keyboard was extremely loose. The cable had to be propped so no weight would pull on it. This was the only way a connection could be secured.
-we were short cables.
-The amp provided was not functioning. Fortunately the DJ I hired had an extra amp in their van to lend.
I understand having faulty equipment can happen sometimes, especially during busier weeks. When I talked to the employee, they did admit the keyboard jack was loose but said everything else was user-error. They refused to give me a partial refund but offered a discount on a future rental or purchase. Due to my experience, I won’t be going back which would obviously make their offer useless.
David is a true piano expert! I originally called him to request a piano tuning for my 1933 upright. Instead, when he took the piano apart, he found worn out and missing pads, uneven keys and a whole lot of dirt/debris. He took the time to clean the piano, replace the key pads and sand the keys to restore the piano to the original condition. David even took a good look at my baby grand piano which is in need of care too. David’s customer service and personality is top notch! I look forward to having David return in the future to keep my pianos in pitch perfect condition.

17. Alden’s Piano LLC
Address: 596 Thorndale Rd, Park City, IL 60085 , Wadsworth , Illinois , United States
Responsive and great work. Got a piano moved then tuned and repaired and it sounds better than ever.
These movers were cheerful and professional, the best!! Highly recommend.
Excellent fast service. They were in and out in 5 minutes. Highly recommend this company! Thank you!
Guys did a good job were quick and respectful.
These guys are phenomenal! I wouldn’t use anyone else! So efficient & professional
The financial aspect of my transaction was flawless. The piano movers we’re polite and friendly, but one of the three man team excused himself as they were in the middle of dismantling the piano, they almost dropped it and in their attempt to save the piano, they knocked into the freshly painted wall and put a hole about the size of a quarter in the wall.
18. North Shore Music
Address: 405 1/2 Linden Ave, Wilmette, IL 60091 , Wadsworth , Illinois , United States
Highly recommend! Alejandro went out of his way to accommodate us and it is much appreciated. So nice to deal with a music shop that is not corporate, wonderful to have someone who is proud of his craft and supportive of the community as well as their love of music!!!
Great place to take guitar, drums or bass lessons! My Son’s been in 3 sessions here and has progressed immensely.
This is an awesome place to improve your skills in music. The owner really knows his stuff and the staff is always helpful when it comes to rescheduling lessons. Can’t recommend enough.
19. Tobias Music
Address: 5013 Fairview Ave, Downers Grove, IL 60515 , Wadsworth , Illinois , United States
I went in because of their ads and I like small family shops. Just walking in you feel welcome. I am an old beginner. They treated me as well as some of their regular “pros” that were hanging around the shop. They represent many brands, but their collection of Taylors and Martins is outstanding. They took a lot of time with me and helped me find what I really wanted without pressure. Whenever I’m in the neighborhood, I stop in. They have a beautiful comfortable “lounge” showroom. Great atmosphere.
Fantastic service, customer centric attitude, you can tell it’s a family owned business that makes sure everyone that works there feels valued. I was shocked by the turn around time and willingness to talk about how they repaired my guitar and installed some new electronics. I have found my new guitar shop after 25 years of going to a closer competing business. Highly recommend going there and checking out the beautiful showroom also.
Best music spot in Illinois, hands down. Trust me we’ve done the work! Family owned business that is so welcoming, warm and high quality. You won’t find a better place where you’ll feel like you got a great deal, great quality and supported a local business altogether. Thanks Paul!
They are more of a acoustic guitar place not really a place for bass players .
***EDIT***
So, I am knocking down my review from five stars to three; due to my most recent experience a couple months after the first one. So I reached backout to buy another guitar (place order) as I really wanted an AD22e or another model I can’t remember, but after confirming they could place the order I let them know that I wanted the AD22e and to provide me the full price so we could close the deal and they went silent, mind you I didn’t even get a copy of the receipt from my AD27e that never came which I had also requested from the last conversation.
I did finally get my guitar ordered but I had a national retailer place the order. I was disappointed I didn’t hear back from Tobias Music about completing the purchase and obtaining a copy of the receipt for my AD27e that never came.
** original **
Just bought an AD27e (Taylor) from them after finding it for sale online. it was a great buying experience. I’m a lefty, buying guitars online is the norm, and most of the time guitars I buy take a day or two to pack and ship. we had a few emails back and forth and they were quick to respond and very professional. These guys had it packed and shipped the same day, and I didn’t place my order until after lunch; that’s service.
They also took the time to dial the guitar in; it came with the action set and was tuned ready to play out of the box. Paul did a great job and really made this buying experience easy, and hassle free. I’ll have to check back often to see what other lefty guitar they get in. If I have the chance, I will buy from them again.
