I have been going here even before it became Whistle Stop Saloon and Tobacco Shop. My cousin had owned it for years before he passed away from cancer and his wife sold it to the now new owner, who is an awesome person as well.
Relaxing and fun
Great music on the outside plaza! Fun place! Super servers!
Had a great time
Good gaming, friendly people competitive prices,, next door is low cost tobacco and smokes which you cant beat. Is part of the saloon so very convenient. But all and all the saloon is a friendly fun atmosphere to be at.

This is a great place to find good deals on antiques. It is very well organized and the guy is very familiar with what is there and where it is located. He’s very friendly and helpful.
Nice place and good variety of antique and vintage collectable
I have found many very cool items in this place. Highly recommended for exploration!
In a little town called Alamont In Illinois. It’s about 10 minutes off Highway 70 in a small historic town. The owner was warm and welcoming with a great personality. I’m gonna guess around 30 booths and a few cases. Treasures for both men and women, for sure, a variety of items. Just to stop and stretch your legs and pick maybe a treasure, it’s a nice place to see.
Hadn’t been there in over a year, everything looks the same. Nothing really new. Kinda boring for an antique store.
4. McDonald’s
Address: 1010 S Main St, Altamont, IL 62411 , Altamont , Illinois , United States
Has happened multiple time but today (05/21/17) I ordered a chess burger plain and 6 piece nugget, I drove off got home to see I had a regular cheeseburger (which happens a lot) but then opened my nugs and only had 4.
Slow service.
5. Chesnut Family Music
Address: 110 S Front St, Effingham, IL 62401 , Altamont , Illinois , United States
The Chesnut family has been a pleasure to work with over the years! Jordan’s builds the best custom amps ever. Great luthier, too.
Always helpful! But go to the back of the building, they moved
Great Service! My #1 place to go to for music supplies.
Great shop for all your musical needs
They didn’t have what I wanted.
In my experience this place is great for repairs on amps and stringed instruments. However, I wouldn’t bring a valuable wind instrument to this store. They worked on my pro euphonium once and I was glad it was a simple repair. I’ll never let Jordon touch it again. I’ve also seen some questionable repairs on a friend’s saxophone. Jordon is very good with stringed instruments and amps but I’m not sure he knows about wind instruments beyond basic repairs. To my knowledge, the store does not employ a instrument repair technician with formal education. Nothing against the guy, but he should probably stick to the stringed instruments. It’s a great store, just something to keep in mind. I shop here, just don’t bring my wind instruments
I like Jordon but hes always to busy to get to my stuff needs to hire help
I brought a saxophone in to have cork replaced on the neck. The job was mediocre at best. I redid it myself
6. House of Guitars
Address: 802 N Keller Dr, Effingham, IL 62401 , Altamont , Illinois , United States
Awesome shop , if you need anything for a string instrument then house of guitars is the place to !
Honest products, honest prices, honest people. Been doing all my business here for years, great selection everytime and all the goodies you need.
Great selection and very homey atmosphere.. Luv the place
Great little shop top notch ownership.
Have bought accessories and have had tech/set up work done here. Owner’s always been nice, and even cuts ya the occasional break on the price. Definitely recommend.
One of only two places that I know of in Effingham to purchase guitars and sound equipment. Even though the shop is small, they have a lot of quality guitars at reasonable prices. I was also impressed with the ukulele selection, an instrument that is becoming more and more popular. They also have some sound equipment and sound accessories at decent prices for performing musicians. If you are in need of anything for your guitar, this place is worth a visit.
Have been coming here for five years and spent thousands of dollars in this store. The owner has never acted like he recognized me or knew my name. Today in the store he falsely accused me of scratching a guitar in the shop, and told me I was lucky he “didn’t shake me down for money.” The guitars in the shop are high quality, but I am never bringing my business back here.
7. Whistle Stop Tavern
Address: N 2nd St, Altamont, IL 62411 , Altamont , Illinois , United States
Really good tenderloin, and GREAT service. Had a table of 14, and one server in the place. She handled it well.
Ate here twice, good food and great people!
Great burgers, the cooking of the French fries properly needed to be watched over. The cooks need proper training to ensure the quality that customers remember. After conversation with Jodi and head cook, I am sure procedures will be revised or enforced. Jon Taffer was in the establishment.
Great food!
Great food. Friendly people.
Good atmosphere fun friendly environment
Great food. Horrible and i do mean HORRIBLE SERVICE.
Food was ok, but was told I had a sissy drink and made a friend feel bad for not drinking alcohol. Sounds like a place doesn’t appreciate their new customers. Maybe invest in a Human Resources.
No vegetarian meals except salad. Male bartender doesn’t mix drinks well and is rude. Thinks he’s funny but he isn’t. I would prefer my drink in a glass not a plastic cup. Music was so loud we couldn’t carry a conversation. Food was just okay, not worth the money though. So many better places to go. Waitress was great though! The 5 star reviews have to family and friends only.
9. Halpin Music Company
Address: 139 S Locust St, Centralia, IL 62801 , Altamont , Illinois , United States
Affordable instruments, associates that are both knowledged and caring in tge musical empathies, and lessons. Great place.
Amazing customer service and a plethora of knowledge. Neil and Ben are the best.
Bought several instruments from them. Very friendly and knowledgeable. Before you buy that cheap flute off craigslist. Give these guys a chance. They might be able to help you out.
Average music store
The website says its open till 5 on Saturday not 3
Good prices
Good stuff just could be better with details and price
I had to have my horn sent to Alton because this tech in Centralia is discriminatory against people with disabilities. Had to drive two and a half hours 200 plus miles and no discount for a simple repair I will never use them again thinking about taking legal action.
10. Sound Source Music Center
Address: 1609 Broadway Ave E, Mattoon, IL 61938 , Altamont , Illinois , United States
Im looking for a electronic keyboard with a nice sound and an amp hookup for more sound.
I dont need anything too big because i drive cross country and spend most my time driving to location.
Something not to big with a nice sound.
I stopped at guitar center but prices were through the roof and no one assisted me.
If you can rreccomend a good unit ill be glad to stop by your shoppe.
Derrick was really helpful and gave great advice! Thanks for the positive experience.
This place has awesome customer service. With the 30 warranty on all guitars on any issue without question or hesitation they will fix it. This place is refreshing and I for one am very happy and thankful to have a music store like this. I highly recommend going here for all music needs.
Love going there and stuff but idk if it was one of the employees or just a customer, but this older guy walked up to me and my friend and made a really rude comment about our colored hair “did you wake up late at a party or something?” How the actual heck would anyone think that is an ok thing to say?????
That was one of my favorite music stores to go to and now I’m not so sure, if it were an employee who sayid that. I’m pretty sure it was because he walked to the back after that. If you have colored hair and you take hate comments too seriously, be careful.
In the late 90s early 2000’s this was an awesome store. Used CD’s, Ppl who loved to talk about old bands and music culture, It was different. Mind you, they still have great instrument selection, and fair prices for a small business. Some staff is decent, some have the personality of a week old gym sock. I’d say if your local, pick up your kids first instrument there and support local small business. Idk if the lead dude from x-crush still works there, but he was awesome. but it’s a lottery.
I remember your Christmas store at the Mall always used to eye the Bass in the box and now i am playing that a Jazz Bass i bought i am now in Tennessee so thanks for helping with my dreams
My family came in just a few minutes ago and they were very ride to us. My boyfriend, who is normally a very strong person, just walked out of this place in tears because they made him feel embarrassed. Smh. Rude rude employees who act like musical elites.
So you want to call on the dude behind me in line and not even greet me or tell me to have a nice day? Poor way to run a business. The old white guy at the front is rude and inconsiderate. He chose to serve the man behind me in line, likely because I’m a woman, so congrats on losing not only my 42$ purchase I got refunded today; but all future purchases from my multi instrumentalist husband that has been a customer here for over 6 years. I’ll buy from Amazon before giving my money to rude old men. Do better. Hope it was worth it for that dudes 12 dollars worth of strings.
11. Zuni Custom Guitars & Amplfrs
Address: 700 Cedar St, Alto Pass, IL 62905 , Altamont , Illinois , United States
My favorite local music store. Plenty of acoustic guitars and the staff is always quick to help, especially Lucas. If you’re in there, try and find him he will take good care of you. Highly recommend!
Decent selection of pianos and guitars, friendly and helpful staff.
Knowledgeable staff and great selection at competitive prices!
Very limited selection of music, they have lots of guitars and pianos, though.
Going to get my guitar that i bought used there to get it fixed i assumed they would have fixed any imperfections before they put it on a shelf for purchase
I primarily look in the guitar/bass section, but good selection of instruments and helpful staff.
Took in a brand new bass to get a pickup replaced. Not a scratch on it, never played once. The supposedly simple pickup replacement took a week and a half only for them to give me back my new bass with the back of it covered in scratches and a huge glob of dried glue stuck to the fretboard that won’t come off. They absolutely wrecked my new bass before I even had a chance to play it. Worst possible experience. I am sick to my stomach about how poorly they treated my equipment and would recommend avoiding this place at all costs.
I hate doing this because I want to like music stores but if service is gonna be like this, everyone myswell DIY at home and heed this warning. I’ve had a few guitars setup there which is what I’m always needing done, new guitars etc, well I happen to be changing the strings on my Chapman that I had setup there and the low E saddle of the Floyd Rose came loose and the saddle screw fell out and that’s strange as you tighten them down. Well here’s what I discovered. Either dude lost the original saddle screw or he broke it somehow, but sitting in place of the original saddle screw is a too small saddle screw from a different bridge! It had been set in there and the string was tightened until it held the saddle in place! Like magic no screwing required! This guaranteed that as soon as the string tension came loose the saddle and screw would come loose every time NOT like it’s supposed to. Soooo sad service especially since luckily here at home I have many of those saddle screws laying around. It would have been better service to call me/order the correct part than to wait for me to get home figure out that I have the wrong part and have to deal with it myself. Smh.
I’ve been to a lot of music stores, and let me tell ya, avoid the this at all costs. Prices are High, equipment is below average, and the customer service is a joke. If you don’t mind paying top prices for sub standard gear and having to staff look down at you like you owe them something well this is the place for you . Two thumbs down
