I bought a guitar from here, a used Gibson SG. They were not only very patient, but very helpful and let me try it out on several different amps to get a feel for how it will sound.
I’m not a fan of Guitar Center as they are hit or miss when it comes to customer service. These guys however are da bomb. They’re the friendliest guitar retail place I’ve ever been to.
Demian is the local guitar professor all parents should know about. My 9 year old is now excited about music!
I think these positive reviews are bogus. I read similar reviews to mine over at pissedconsumer that are probably more trust worthy than the positive reviews here
I purchase a set of vintage Grover tuners from The Guitar Place Chico thru eBay. Their user name there is boutiqueguitarchico. The tuners were advertised as “EXC+ COND WORK PERFECTLY!” and also said “packed with extreme care” Those were the words the store owner Damien used in the ad.
I received the tuners in an itty bitty bag barely large enough to stuff the vintage tuners in and they were all crushed to pieces and bent. I paid $10 Priority Mail to ship the package to the same state (I’m about 150 miles away).
I contacted The Guitar Place Chico and complained. Damien the owner responded and was nothing but rude and disrespectful. He started out by sarcastically calling me “classy” and told me to send them back if I don’t like it and then complained that he didn’t charge me enough. Never once was he the least bit apologetic.
Jim did a fabulous job repairing my PRS electric guitar. I knocked it off its stand and tragically cracked the headstock. I was a afraid it was totally destroyed, but Jim put it all back together. Now it sounds terrific, and you can’t even see where it was damage was unless you look very carefully. Jim did the repairs for a reasonable price and in a very short time. Definately five stars! Thank you Jim!
I have been extremely pleased with the quality of work from Jim Williford at Stringed Instrument Works. Jim has worked mostly on my acoustic guitars and a banjo over the years for bridge and pickup replacements as well as some occasional buzzing issues I was unable to address myself. Jim is professional, his pricing is fair, and he always does a great job.
Jim is a nice guy however, the work he did to my guitar was minimal and incomplete. I asked to fix the crack on my old guitar and all he did was fill the gap on one crack on the front of my guitar. The back is the same untouched and cracks showing. I am now online ordering epoxy to fix the cracks myself. He charged me $140 dollars which is too much for the little work he did. Be aware, and see if you can fix your guitar yourself before going to him. I feel ripped off.

I love this store. It’s so cute and has great workers who answered my questions.
Very helpful and kind! Knowlegable folks!
Helpful and knowledgeable staff, no pressure to buy. Great place!
I really appreciate these guys for their customer care and smart staff. Good job making the store a fun and relaxing place to explore musical instruments for all ages!
Got my input fixed on my wife’s guitar and my daughter’s veola fixed up too.
Happy new year!
I took a subwoofer at this place for repair. I got a call back about 3 to 4 weeks later regarding the cost, i asked them to hold the subwoofer until i have a chance to pick it up within 2 weeks without repairs and i was told it was not a problem. 2 weeks later it was pouring rain and since i have a truck bed which is the only place where the subwoofer would fit, so i didn’t not have a way of picking it up. i went today to get it and the person in repairs said that he threw the subwoofer away, because i took so long. He also claimed that he left a voicemail saying he would throw it away if i didn’t pick it up. I had a message to pick it up, but he did not say that otherwise it would be tossed away.
This was an expensive sub and the only thing it needed was a speaker, the amp on it was perfect and the box was in great shape. Anyone with common sense knows that they probably fixed it and sold it, given that everything was in great shape except for the speaker. I feel that they way they do business is dishonest and do not recommend this place to anyone.
5. Guitar Center
Address: 2027 Dr Martin Luther King Jr Pkwy #119, Chico, CA 95928 , Hamilton City , California , United States
I ordered online not only was the product nicer than I expected, but it arrived a week early.
Absolutely love this place. Picked up a Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator open box on the cheap and made some noise while I was there, because why not.
A good music store. The staff us very knowledgeable and helpful.
Pretty good for a music chain store. They offer everything from musical instruments to sheet music and lessons.
Staff is friendly and helpful. The individuals that provide the lessons are knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. The store is well stocked with instruments, and accessories. The store is easy to navigate through, and customers are helped in a timely manner. Customer service answers the phone pleasantly, and is able to handle any inquiries that you may have.
nice clean and a good variety of instruments. staff was helpful and the air quality was outstanding. no pressure to sell and the pricing was mainstream. pretty good selection of keyboards, guiters, and drums.
Didn’t go there ,just parked.
overpriced, not much selection of high end guitars just cheap ones
i called in advance to sell some lightly used equipment they found the equipment on their website for $699 & $299 used and was told to drive the hour to their location .. so they could give me 60% of what the used price was upon arrival the owner then toldhis employees not to buy my equipment so 2 hours of driving for nothing.. i used to shop at this guitar center … NEVER AGAIN… the staff was very polite and helpfull to help me find near by pawn shops which bought my items for around the same price guitar center had offered !!
6. Melody Records
Address: 341 Main St, Chico, CA 95928 , Hamilton City , California , United States
Awesome place! This will be my number one stop for records in Chico. Great selection, if they don’t have what you’re looking for, they will tell you when they will have it and even call you to let you know. Great customer service!
Love this store
Great place lots of choices. One of my faves.
Honestly, one of the best vinyl stores, great selection and employees. The prices are a little high sometimes however.
Melody records is a great place to go if you’re looking to expand your vinyl collection or find more obscure concert posters. The store is small, so you won’t find absolutely everything you’re looking for, but you will find some gems. Well worth a look.
Very cool place to score some classic music on vinyl or cassette tape. They probably have CDs too.
Like payless shoe store with all the boots.
Decent selection, not great after-sales. I bought a brand new copy of a record here on February 10th which I played and found had a problem. I work away from home and so it was a couple of weeks before I was able to try and remedy the issue.
There is a rough edge on one of the discs, and the first track skips, it is clearly a factory defect.
I called the store on 23rd February and the girl working there told me to call back when the owner was there, which I did today, and spoke to the owner and asked about a returns policy, and he told me that I had waited too long, so nothing could be done.
I want to support local businesses, but they need to support their customers too. I have spent a load of cash at Melody in recent months, and now I don’t really want to go there any more.
Chelsea was so rude to another customer while I was there. Lost my business
7. Apollo Piano
Address: 936 Mangrove Ave, Chico, CA 95926 , Hamilton City , California , United States
I absolutely love this place i had no idea they did everything that they do, I always heard good things about their pianos and one day I Google music lessons for my son and apollo music and I call well turns out they not only offer music lessons for one on one but they also have what’s called Rock Recruit. So what that is is a rock group for kids there are a few kids in the group and they are taught to make beats pretty much the basics of music and where to start and they get to try out different instruments such as the drums, piano and guitar and all the kids get a chance with each instrument and the class is once a week for one hour. My son is a little shy and has trouble making friends and this class this rock band has helped him come out of his shell so much. The teachers are so good with the kids they have so much fun so my son will be staying in the Rock Recruit and then he will also be doing one on one lessons for the guitar. They also have real nice pianos and a variety to choose from I highly recommend stopping in and talking with them about anything piano and other instrument and music needs or questions you may have they are very professional and friendly and the prices for the class and lessons aren’t going to break the bank.
Great teachers that offer a very broad spectrum of instruments to learn.
My newly purchased piano (from a vendor in San Francisco) arrived sounding very out of tune. Vince gave the piano a thorough tuning (twice through), bringing the richness of the notes into full relief. It’s like playing a different piano. Couldn’t be happier with his expertise.
Asked if they would take my piano. No response after 4 days.
Horrible customer service! I have been trying to get an answer on whether or not they can move a piano for me. They promised they would call back with a simple yes or no answer. I keep calling for any info, and no one can seem to decide if they want my business or not. 5 days later still nothing even after I call numerous times. If your too busy, and you cant help just say so! Look elsewhere
8. Davidson Strings
Address: 269 Humboldt Ave, Chico, CA 95928 , Hamilton City , California , United States
I brought a double bass to Ryan, whom came highly recommended by other musicians within Chico. He addressed all of my needs and put extra love into my instrument. I am very happy with level of service. Will use again!
9. Hamilton City
Address: California 95951 , Hamilton City , California , United States
It was great! Loved it. The guy I dealt with was totally cool. No Nonsense. Priced to sell. He wore a mask which was good to see. I bought a guitar two stands and a wall hanger and am totally satisfied! I was a bit of an easy sale. Been wanting a new guitar for a long time. He showed me what I could afford answered all of my questions. Guitar stand was half the price of one of the other music stores here in town. I strongly recommend Yuba City Music store for all your musical needs!
Great store, good chat with the owner, check it when you are next in town.
The purchase was quick and the prices were amazing. 10/10 would recommend!
My son was in need of a flute for junior high band. They had a great price on a used one and were very knowledgeable. Thank you!
Zaful
Not much of a selection,,a lot of really low end pieced together mutt guitars and amps.
Tried very hard to engage counter man in conversation,,but he just preferred to sit quietly while I looked over tiny inventory…..guess I will keep looking for a music store.

Great staff, great instrument selection, and there are lessons available on-site.
When it comes to a man that stands behind his work Bruce is a man with Integrity … I Recommend The Music Connection for any work needed.
The man that works there is amazingly informative. Small town vibe great service. Selection is ok. He truely cares about his customers and wants to help. Music lessons are also available here. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Open on Saturday
Friendly and quick service to string my guitar.
The store is nice and has a large selection of quality products, The environment comes off as overly professional and unpersonable, maybe type A personalities might be their customer Target demographic though? So maybe it just isn’t my personal fit.
The owner was very rude to me .Was completely unhelpful I’ll never go there again. He even insulted me
Customer service is essential to me. I expect friendly staff that listen to me and try to help me. This is not that store. With unimpressive prices and staff, they convinced me not to go back.
The two times I’ve been in there I’ve been completely ignored. They did welcome me in. But I stood at the counter waiting for the person to get off the phone. Which they were on for a good 25 minutes. Maybe I’m impatient idk. But I definitely wouldn’t have been treated like that by Bernie. He was so nice and encouraging. He always remembered me and said that I was talented and he enjoyed me and my brother coming in. This place just doesn’t do it for me. Going to Amazon from now on.
I ended up at brass reed. It was a more than pleasant experience. Just make sure they’re open before you drop In. I specifically needed stuff my guitar. They had everything I wanted and the guy working the counter took the time to ask me questions and actually help me.
They did an amazing job tuning up my sax. It play beautifully now. I give thanks we have this great music shop in town.
We are lucky to have this guy in town. He really knows his stuff. Repaired a vintage sampler with new tact switches and cleaned it up nice, really went above and beyond on that project. He also fixed up my guitar with all new internals, new hardware, and polished up to look brand again, as well as setting up the action very nicely. He builds amps. He will make you instrument cables if you need a custom length. I’m very thankful I didn’t have to send my equipment out of town for repairs.
My saxophone was repaired there and it works wonderful now the shop is also a convenient place to get reeds, guitar strings, drumsticks basic items that you would need if you are a musician the shop also repairs amplifiers and guitars and other instruments.
Owners kinda of an a hole woundnt order strings for us, only wanted to sell us what he had
Knows the music business.
Went in for strings and left with more notable
Guitar repair shop but I bought guitar strings .

Extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff! These guys know their stuff! 100% impressed…
Tom is a very friendly guy and helps out aspiring artists have a place to learn. The place has a pleasant “mom and pop store” mood.
Knowledge shop
A small music shop with a very knowledgeable owner. Pricing is fair. If it were in a better location, 5 stars.
They closed 5minutes early so I wasn’t able to get inside.
Grand place. Has everything a musician might need. Dark and packed with vintage instruments it’s fun too look about in. Best place for school band instruments.
I was totally ignored. People were in the building and I heard someone working behind the counter but I couldn’t see them. I rang the bell several times and even called out but I was completely ignored. I had money in my pocket ready to buy and left with nothing.
Very rude and does not support the military. My friend served in the Navy for 22 years and all he did was ask do you offer military discounts and the guy was super rude. Said everybody gets a discount. Doesn’t matter if you’re in the military. And it was the way he said it was so disrespectful. A Simple no would have been great. Most places offer one so he asked. Then treated him like dirt after that.

My daughter loves that Ray is teaching her songs that she wants to learn!
This is the one stop for all your recording needs. I had a very good experience at this location and highly recommend it to others.
A bucket list item for me to learn bass guitar. Ray makes lessons and practice so fun. I can’t wait to practice and come back for my lessons. I’m progressing at a very good rate. As an adult with a full and busy life, I had to be sure my lesson schedule would fit in with all of my other responsibilities. Ray makes sure I can accomplish my music goals and fit my music goals into my already full life. I’m so glad I found Simple Strings Music Academy. Thank you Ray!
