La Jolla Music is a great place to learn music. The site is expanding with more practice rooms. Joshua Voss is my son’s guitar teacher. He is wonderful and works with his student to tap their full music potential.
Kelly Duley is my other son’s piano teacher. She is a great teacher and I would highly recommend her.
Very good experience learning here. I had my guitar lessons with Josh since November 2022. Josh is a talented guitarist in so many genres like Rock, blues, jazz and he is awesome and knowledgeable, always patiently listens to my questions and illustrate music theory really clear. I had to drop lesson due to my job schedule but I would definitely recommend him and the place to people who wanted to start learning music
had violin and cello lessons. all great service. good management
I have visited the store five times and each time there was absolutely no customer service.
Every employee I came across, including an owner, ignored me as I walked in to purchase sheet music.
Today, in fact, I went in and the person there was having a conversation with a fellow employee.
I picked out my music, went up to the counter and had to slap the sheet music books down on the counter a couple of times to get her attention.
Every time I go in I’m ignored and never asked if I want help or even looked at to acknowledge my presence.
Unfortunately, this is the only place close to where I live where I can get sheet music, so that is why I’ve gone in and purchased multiple times.
If there we’re another music store near me. I would definitely not go there again.
2. Jade J Schulz Violins
Address: 7748 Herschel Ave ste b, La Jolla, CA 92037 , La Jolla , California , United States
If the History Channel produced a show about a violin shop like they do with cars in Fast and Loud, or the Discovery Channel does with motorcycles in American Chopper, Jade Schulz would be the star of the show. His shop lacks the crazy drama that makes the above mentioned shows popular, but Jade is fascinating, he knows his violins and he can keep you captivated with his work. Jade is a true artisan; a luthier in it for the love of the instrument!
Jade is a nice person! So refreshing to bring my fiddle/violin to a luthier who is honest and does excellent repare work.
Very honest and knowledgeable man!
I am a graduate student at SDSU and have seen a lot of luthiers.
Just took my violin and he adjusted my sound post with no charge! The violin sounds 10 times better! Great man! Highly recommend!
I’ve enjoyed Rick’s performances on numerous occasions. He is a superior entertainer, playing piano, sax, and singing a variety of genres of music. I always look forward to the opportunities I have to go listen to him do what he loves to do.
Rick is the ultimate entertainer a true professional who can perform all genres of music whether
playing piano, 3 different saxes or singing. He engages his audiences on a personal level that gives each one the impression he is performing for them. My family, friends & I have known Rick for more than 10yrs
& it is always a pleasurable evening. The man can do it all & he does whether in limited or large venues his performances are met with enthusiasm & marvel at his talent level. Rick is a must see for anyone that enjoys music.
Rick Ross is a phenomenal entertainer! Great singer, but his keyboard and sax skills will blow you away! Rick has the ability to read a crowd, and intuitively pick the right songs to keep the folks happy. Whether he’s doing a private party (which he’s at my house) or a restaurant/club/lounge setting, Rick keeps the crowd entertained, and is conscientious about performing, taking very few breaks to ensure he doesn’t lose the crowd. If you’re looking for an entertainer, call Rick! He brings the fun!
My children have been attending since my eldest was 2 years old , now my son 6 and my daughter both take the keyboard class, my daughter has been reading music and can play with both hands . We love the instructors, and the cost is very reasonable, considering it would take a lobotomy to reverse what they have learned through out the years. My favorite is when I get the song “Elephants Have Wrinkles” stuck in my head when I’m surfing or cruising through the grocery store.
This has been a staple in enriching my children with music for each baby I had/ will have. It is our favorite part of the week. Jennifer, the owner, will help you find a perfect class for your child. Rosie is always there with a smile. We love Ms. Nancy’s extra fun music classes. All the teachers there have beautiful voices and love children. They all seem to be professional vocalists and know how to play instruments. They do musical education, teach the kids about music vocab, how to play instruments, teach rhythm and the major scale, and it is all super fun and engaging. My kids love every minute and are never wondering what is coming next. Perfect from baby to preschool. There are also classes for older kids and more dance and art classes getting added to the schedule. Everything is great quality. I feel super lucky to have this in our area. Oh and they are awesome of you miss a class for any reason you can make up. So you never feel like you have to attend with a crabby kid if it just isnt gonna happen that day #momlife.
Love these music classes for my 18 month old!
7. La Jolla Piano Insititute
Address: 7580 Fay Ave #305, La Jolla, CA 92037 , La Jolla , California , United States
Always a delightful treat! Expect a long line, it is very popular.
I just love Better Buzz. The decor and vibes just never fail.
Good coffee. Clean restaurant very welcoming.
Honestly $6 for their cold nitro brew…extremely basic and I rarely give out anything less than 5 stars. Peetes coffee is 3ish $ and tastes less sour. Would give less stars but the aesthetics are on point
Cute spot right down town. Friendly service. Cappuccino was ok. Didn’t love the underlying coffee flavor but it was well made.
def love spots like this
Even the “half sweet” drinks are extremely sweet. The hot latte looked and tasted like something from a vending machine.
I love this coffee shop but today was a total fail: no decaf, no ice cream, no working bathrooms. It sounds like all these issues have been happening over multiple days so hopefully this location will resolve their issues soon.
Very weak and dilute. Probably for people who don’t like coffee.
13. Hale Ukulele
Address: 3650 Clairemont Dr, San Diego, CA 92117 , La Jolla , California , United States
Excellent uke shop..great selection and owner Ric os very knowledgeable. Great shop!
Hale Ukulele is a real gem of an ukulele store! They carry a vast array of ukuleles ranging from beginner friendly to high end professional. Anything you’re looking for you can find here. But where Hale Ukulele really shines is the staff & customer service. The owner Ric is incredibly welcoming, kind and knowledgeable. I came in for just a look around and to check the place out while visiting my hometown, and left with a really cool Hale Uke shirt, some stickers, an Ohana shaker and a lot of really great tips from Rick about local ukulele groups and the online uke community. I can’t recommend Hale Ukulele highly enough. If you’re looking for your first ukulele or another to add to your collection, Ric’s got it all, plus the knowledge and aloha to go along with it!!
Great service and an excellent variety of Ukuleles!!
Lots of selection.
You’re best selection of ukes in San Diego.
300 examples
Took my dad’s Martin Uke here to see if the guy had any info on it. I just wanted info as it only has the Martin logo, and made in Pennsylvania on it. So he pompously dumps a huge Martin serial # book, then after much frustrated page turning he comes to the conclusion I’d already reached, no serial #, it’s a mystery. Then since he had no idea what Martin Ukulele it was he tried to lowball appraise the instrument, $1500 less than my dad was quoted. I wouldn’t go back to this store the owner is one “Crazy G!”
Bought a ukulele there. Now that I am more knowledgeable about ukuleles, I know he sold me something he just wanted to get rid off. Was not helpful at all. I recommend you do your research before going to his store. Also priced are way cheaper online. Also was never told of any refund policy. (Never claimed to be forced to buy) please avoid. As you can see from his reply he is not to be trusted
Took my Kamaka tenor $1300 new there to see what they would give me and they offered me $200,might as well have just slapped me in the face but they are running a business i get it i geuss
14. Guitars San Diego
Address: 6255 Ferris Square E, San Diego, CA 92121 , La Jolla , California , United States
I was looking to try a Laveree and found Doug on the internet. I stopped by his hard to find shop and spent a great hour with him sorting through guitars till we found one that fit my taste , needs and budget. Not a Laravee. The shop is sort of unusual as he down sized due to covid. I had a great time and will return in a few days to make my final decision. No pressure sales technique and very very helpful.
After returning to all the local shops to revisit there gear I returned to Doug’s shop and purchased a Furch that was superior in every way to the Martin’s,Gibsons and Taylor’s I had tried elsewhere.
Thanks for your time and expertise.
Very helpful and knowledgeable about guitars. The owner is honest and cares for helping the customer make an informed decision based on your budget. Especially accommodating during COVID. He takes good care of his products. 5/5 great place for purchasing higher end guitars. Love my new Furch Blue Masters Series.
If you want a fair price on a guitar and deal with someone who cares about your interests, call Doug. He really knows his business. I purchased a Eastman e3de and have another Eastman ac922ce on order. It’s nice dealing with a company that cares about service.

Went there to Explore the wide variety of High end Acoustics, but unfortunately they were closed and you need to schedule an appointment. I will look to make an appointment next time in town. I was really interested in some Boucher Models they advertised.
Doug, I don’t need to be heard. I need others to understand your ethics so that they can make good choices on where to spend their money. I never mentioned color. I simply said I ordered the wrong mandolin. My husband wanted a 915 because of the tuners – color was not an issue for him. I accidentally ordered a 815. You said you didn’t have a 915 and that’s when you stated it wouldn’t be good business to do the return. I did tell you about my husbands health issues and you did rudely hang up on me. You didn’t even give me the option of paying the insurance and the shipping. I would have been very happy to do so. I never expected you to lose money. The mandolin is still in the original package unopened. If you care to make it right, please let me know.
Furthermore, the sticker on the box says “due to the risk of humidity changes and to reduce the risk of damage to your hand-crafted instrument – please do not open this box for 24 hours. This lets the instrument acclimate to the weather changes in your local area.” Unless someone is local it is impossible to meet your return deadline. If your intent is not to take returns, I recommend changing your website to state that.
I wish I had read YELP reviews before I purchased from you.
Buyers beware….don’t order from this company. I ordered a mandolin as a surprise for my husband and accidentally ordered the wrong model. The mandolin is still in the box and unopened. I missed the 2 day return policy by a few days because my husband has been seriously ill in the hospital with heart issues. I called Doug Law JR and told him my dilemma. He informed me that the return policy was 2 days and that it would not be good business to accept the return. Then he hung up on me! I am beyond disappointed with the way I was talked to and treated.
Good shop
15. La Jolla Music Society

Great music hall. Great performances. Friendly atmosphere
Baker Baum Concert Hall is a perfect venue for chamber music. It is also very heartening to see the San Diego Symphony utilizing the space as part of their programming and for their musicians. I just wish there were a lot more concerts!
Beautiful hall, interesting programmig
Last night my wife and I attended Tango Night. We have a few suggestions. First, the program should contain more description of each song. Second, there should have been more explanation of the various variations of the tangos performed. We were at a loss to differentiate one from the other. Third, the maestro could have detailed the functions of each instrument and its contribution to the full effect of the music. Fourth, it would have been nice to evoke scenes of Buenos Aires for some of the tangos, though he did, in one instance, with the “marketplace song.”
Beautiful venue
Just a Terrible experience getting inside. Over 200 people in the Will Call line for tickets, with only two people distributing tickets. ♂️ Just ridiculous!

The Foundation Music Center is a great music studio with a convenient location in San Diego near the 5 freeway. My daughter is 11 and I was looking for an experienced teacher for piano lessons. I was extremely satisfied with the level of education her teacher had and the overall vibe of the music studio environment. This music studio offers other instruments like guitar, drums, and saxophone as well as ongoing Theory classes and day camps during the summer. It is well worth the money. I highly recommend it!
We have two girls, 10 an 7, studying piano and music theory at the FMC. Scouting about for the right teacher can be really stressful on lots of levels — before we eventually came into the Foundation, we have had to change our private piano teacher 3 times during 3 years. Sometimes we found a good teacher, but they had to relocate for career development or stop teaching to take care of sick parents. A friend of ours recommended the FMC then we made a fortunate decision at this time. We are paying less tuition than ever but have seen tremendous and comprehensive improvements in our girls’ performance within 3 months. Our girls have recently taken their first RCM technical exam and scored “First Class Honors” or above, respectively — thanks very much to Rebecca and her team for their devotion, effort, and outstanding teaching skills. We also highly recommend the unlimited Supplemental program — our kids had never learned music theory before but now they are almost ready for the first level of the RCM theory exam. They provide the Lab class so kids can have a quality 30-min self-practicing time, and the rhythmic and theory lessons are usually taught by their experienced faculty making the lessons are truly cost-effective.
The Foundation Music Center is exceptional in every way! The training is superb and they inspire my daughter to stretch her limits musically!!! We are so grateful to be working with this team of professionals!!!!
This is my favorite bookstore. Hands down. I’ve been going here for a decade. Fantastic books you can’t find anywhere else, new and used. You want that new lit book? You want Greek philosophy in the original Greek? You want musicology/science policy/art/achitecture/geology/film history/philosophy/poetry/everything else books you didn’t know existed and never knew how much you wanted? They’re here. And the owner is the best man on Earth. Go here.
this bookstore was so cute. ambience was only enhanced by the extremely cute boy who i met in the prose section of the store and whose number i profoundly regret not getting. he was so so tall and wearing a fishboy tshirt. fishboy if ur out there plz plz lmk if european monastery book was good for the thoughts or just the bookshelf
Awesome place to look up for books!
A great “old fashioned ” bookstore…very knowledgeable staff..great for old and out of print
Love the vibe
A great little bookstore in the Village, perfect spot to hangout and shop for a gift for someone special.
As a family, we have been to used bookstores across the country and western Europe. Bookstores hold a magical warmth and neither have us remember having a more unwelcome and unkind experience as we did with this store. No one else was in the store but he was hesitant to let us in (even just the adults in the party) due to COVID (he had the front gated off from the bulk of the store) and then pointed to a children’s section in front with a fee Harry Potter books saying ‘those are for his age’. Our 13 year old reads classics and is studying Latin. Either way, because I could not produce a reason for looking, he was most unwelcome. I can forgive a restaurant or a gym for such behavior but a bookstore? No.
I rarely leave a bookshop without buying a book but despite spending a hour here ,I failed to find anything to interest me. Better on reference than fiction. Found the layout frustrating.
Super rude owner who doesn’t seem to want business.. here’s my experience; I walked in, read the sign telling me to put my drink on the shelf before entering, and start to place my drink down.
Then the owner comes out and starts harassing me about it and tries to shoo me outside. There’s a little mini gate you have to cross to get to the rest of the store, but he blocks it. So he starts telling me “You should check out the books outside. They’re only a dollar”. I tell him thanks, and that I already saw them. I wanted to know about the books he had inside. He replies, “well check out the ones outside. They seem to be your type.”
Freaking wow. Pretty high and mighty for a moldy old, used book seller. My wife came in separately after me and had a similar experience. Not sure what his problem was but definitely won’t be coming back to find out.

I take special music lessons to help with Parkinson’s disease, a mix of piano harmonica singing drums and other fun stuff. I feel it’s really help me with my symptoms. You make close friends with the other students and it’s actually really good support group.
While taking the elevator to see my friend that had open heart surgery at Scripps hospital in la Jolla I met the most amazing woman named Audrey we began to chat and I found out she worked for your company and that she did music therapy I asked her if she could come to the room and play for my friend who was having a ruff few days. Audrey showed up and lighten the mood with her amazing voice. She is a very uplifting woman with the most beautiful voice
