Superb spot for the hard to find string instrument or the impossible to find.
Great local music store. Got my first guitar from their old store when I was 13. Comfortable layout and helpful service. Ask John to fix your violin or if you’re looking to take up Uke/banjo.
5. Bananas At Large
Address: 1654 Second St, San Rafael, CA 94901 , Marin County , California , United States
great selection, the employees don’t talk down to you, highest quality equipment you can find AND it’s independent. Go for it. Alex is the best employee there I’ve worked with, Ian is great too.
This place is a respected establishment with great reviews. I’m glad I chose them
For a little pricey as well but it’s the only store out here that has almost everything you need. The workers are pretty good very knowledgeable and always willing to help with anything that they can.
Strings only on this visit, but one day a new acoustic guitar . Have an awesome Summer 2023! Love & “LIGHT”
It’s ok. High priced. The only real music store around. So has alit of equipment. But for rich people in this rich town. The employees are laid back…
Terrible store if you play drums. Very little stock, super disorganized. They can always order things, but might as well use Amazon at that point.
Edit: the store sends out a text if you make a transaction to leave a review. Apparently if you aren’t happy with your experience they will attack you and your own place of business. Classy guys. You solicit my opinion and then get aggressive because you didn’t like my answer. Bummer that those 5 transactions we really small, because they’ll definitely be the last ones you get from me.
Not to friendly…
while the service was nice and merch was amazing, i left feeling fustrated and overwhelmed. the salesman i worked with damaged a $375 pedal by plugging in the wrong cable. pedal worked fine before my visit … in fact before he touched it (while at the store) it worked fine. he gave me a deer in headlights expression when he and i noticed that the pedal no longer worked. literally within10 min. i was testing the strymon big sky and el cap and their power supplies … long story short beware guys.
The staff at Magic Flute is friendly, helpful, kind, and never condenscending. I’ve gotten my guitar fixed at the shop at a fair price. My children have been fitted there with both rental and new instruments over the years. We’ve always been well counseled about renting versus buying, and when to rent and when to buy. When I was a newbie, Mike, who is awesome, helped me pick out a Martin guitar. He played a range of guitars for me, up and down in price and tone, so I could hear the pros and cons of each. That was nearly fifteen years ago. I still love the shop. It’s like Cheers, a place where everyone knows your name, and are glad to help out.
10/10 would go there again
As I have experienced in the past, the Magic Flute staff was helpful and informative as I was looking into instruments. They took time to answer my questions and provide info for a good decision. I am very pleased as always with their friendly service, their selection of options and quality of their products. Great experience.
Really awesome place! I just wish they had a military discount…..
Nice store, instruments and employees
It’s lovely with a lot of lovely things and nice people. Prices alright. What I don’t like is that music book racks are so deep I can only reach halfway. Anything in the back half is lost to me unless I ask for help, which I don’t like to do when I am browsing leisurely.
Did not do as asked
Saturday 1:30 PM, Incredibly rude salesman in the saxophone department. I’ve Purchased an Alto Saxophone, two high end Ukuleles, many accessories, and dozens of music books from them in the past. I’ll be taking future business including musical instrument purchases to the web from now on.
I bought a cello here 12 years ago, wanted to sell it back. Staff was super unhelpful, told me to bring it up and then said the person in charge of consignment was off till Friday, then asked me why I even bothered driving up when I. Very, very dissapointed.
8. Loose Joints Records
Address: 11205 CA-1, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956 , Marin County , California , United States
Small but mighty. Loose Joints is chock full of the good stuff and none of the scruff. Best percentage of good pulls of any vinyl shop in the bay area.
Unexpected in only my third visit to Point Reyes Station in 52yr is so much growth, the endurance of tgd Point Reyes Light – and a thriving and well- stocked record store.
9. Player’s Guitars
Address: 840 B St, San Rafael, CA 94901 , Marin County , California , United States
Awesome vintage gear and great repair shop. I’ve had three guitars modified there and been very happy with the work and the quick turnaround. I also bought a great tube amp and a pedal. Prices are quite reasonable, and the guys are friendly and laid back. It’s my “go to” in Marin.
Cool atmosphere
Really cool place with a family-business-vibe. The people that run the shop are knowledgeable, fair and polite. I’ve been seeing these guys for years and they’ve always had a good selection of used instruments.
ギター大好きなリペアマンさんが親切に応対してくれます。おいてあるギターも面白い。今度は何か買おう!
Bad business ethics

Tiene muy buenas Tarolas y muy buenos presios el amigo Roberto
Robert is very knowledgeable about the different needs of different music and has has always been very helpful. This place is great. They have lots of cool vintage gear too!
It’s called Drummers Tradition for a reason. They’ve been around for a long time and really know their stuff.
Such a wonderful selection of vintage and used drums and incredible snare drum selection.
14. Mill Valley Music

Fantastic! Mill Valley Music = Love of music. I could spend hours browsing. Thank you!
This is the best vinyl shop in the Bay Area and one of the best in America. A great selection of used and new records. The owner, Gary, knows everything and can get you any record. Very friendly and fair prices.
Great place to find anything you are looking at. Gary is very knowledgeable.
Good selection of vinyl and CDs but the place is so packed it’s very hard to find anything
Nice collection of records and cds
