They have such good food! Their biscuits and gravy are delicious. Their French toast sticks are incredible. Their hamburgers are so big and delicious. Reasonable prices and always treated kindly.
2. Down Home Guitars
Address: 11 S White St, Frankfort, IL 60423 , Milford , Illinois , United States
Hands down the best customer service and quality care around! Steve fixed my guitar at an amazingly affordable price. I will definitely be buying all of my instruments from DHG and can’t wait to sign my niece up for drum and voice lessons here!
Needed some work done on my banjo and was looking to get connected with some teachers and other musicians in the area, and I got all of that at Down Home Guitars. Friendly and helpful staff as well.
The people here are very nice to their customers. I came here after my brother dropped me off for a haircut appointment two hours early and got to buy a piano book and a lovely guitar pick while I was there. Very glad I came here. Will definitely consider taking piano lessons here.
The store carries beautiful high-end acoustic instruments. They also hold some impressive seminars and concerts. If you want the very best and can spend 6K on a guitar then this store may be for you. With a larger wallet, perhaps you will receive better treatment than I did. The red-haired owner of this store is probably the rudest retail store owner I have ever experienced. Of course, I wasn’t there to spend thousands of dollars. I simply went there to buy picks, strings, tab books, and to explore and discuss instruments with other music lovers. My initial visits were often greeted by cold, stiff, and awkward personalities. After multiple visits, I expected things would warm up, and while some staff were friendly, it was never a comfortable experience. This was especially true whenever the owner was present. Pompous and arrogant seem apt descriptions, and small talk and small wallets are beneath him.
3. Carl’s Pro Band
Address: 1806 Empire Street Service Rd, Bloomington, IL 61704 , Milford , Illinois , United States
Great service! Instrument cam back in near perfect condition. We will definitely be using them again!
Love this place! So fast and friendly.
Carl’s did an amazing job cleaning and repairing our son’s trumpet when we discovered two of his valves were not working properly. They immediately knew what the problem was and had it repaired in one day. The staff is friendly and professional. We highly recommend Carl’s.
Very knowledgeable very friendly. They treat us beginners with the same respect concert veterans
Super helpful and upfront with tactful explanation of options for the work needing done
4. Axes Music Group
Address: 19715 South La Grange Road Suite 3, Mokena, IL 60448 , Milford , Illinois , United States
The best. Whatever you need, just go talk to them…
Words cannot describe the incredible service Axes Music has provided me for years. Not only have the incredible talented staff taught me how to play many instruments, they have carefully guided me into a career in music which I absolutely love. This business is absolutely incredible and each and every member of their staff is extremely talented, and very friendly. Overall Axes Music is the place to go for music lessons, instrument service, and professional recording.
5. Midlothian Music
Address: 15645 S 94th Ave, Orland Park, IL 60462 , Milford , Illinois , United States
I have taken vocal, cello, bass guitar, and guitar lessons through Midlothian Music. They are fairly priced, but I all depends on your own chemistry between you and your teacher. I think they do a great job helping you find a match with someone that works well with you. They owner and his son are super kind and also very helpful with lesson book recommendations, repairing guitars, etc. Would not recommend bringing band and orchestra instruments in here for repairs, they seem to be better with guitar and bass guitar repairs. That aside, they are a nice little business!
Most music stores make you feel like you’re bothering them, but the guys at Midlothian Music treat you very well.
Friendly , knowledgeable staff….beautiful layout of instruments….great vibe……oh yea, and best of all…family owned
I love all the products but at times the service was bad, other visits there were good service. Thanks!
John Lekavich advised me to do business over the phone and outside of Reverb.com so that he could avoid their fees and I would not be charged taxes. The T5 he assured me was brand new has a broken saddle and is not brand new as advertised.
I have called all week and sent him several emails with pics of the broken saddle; he has not replied. John has not conducted himself as an adult nor a professional, and I do not recommend doing business with him nor Midlothian Music.
Two kind words folks….
STAY AWAY!!!
If I could give it less than a one star rating I most definitely would!
Take your hard earned money somewhere else people.
RUDE sales personel and there’s no such thing as “sale prices”.
They aren’t sale prices AT ALL, they are the FULL PRICES.
No discounted sales… STAY AWAY!!!
Find yourselves A REAL mom and pop shop.
All that glitters isn’t gold. Salt and sugar both LOOK the same at first glance.
I remember looking at a bass guitar they had on display there. Seriously looking to buy this particular one.
I remember gently taking it off of the stand to see how it felt. IMMEDIATELY, and I mean in a matter of what seemed like 3 nano seconds one of the sales person working there ran over to me and literally snatched the instrument out of my hands and looked at me as if I was trying to steal the bloody thing, and I am NOT exaggerating. Honestly. I was like, “WOAH!!!”
They was no explanation of any kind just a stern look as he put the bass back on the stand. It’s not that the instrument was a”one of a kind” either. I simply sat there flabbergasted and wondered, “exactly HOW do they make ANY money in this store?” I quietly stood up, left the store and have NEVER RETURNED. Now to be fair maybe the person was having a very rotten day OR was intoxicated in some way, OR BOTH!
But still….
I’m sure that there (((EVOLUTION))) are other stores in the (((MUSIC))) area.
Actually I am CERTAIN that there is!
Stopped in to inquire about purchasing a used guitar and was treated rudely. I won’t be returning.
I wasn’t going to post these details but since they replied with incorrect information, perhaps confusing me with another customer.
When I responded that I wanted to spend $100 (not $75) the person behind the counter told me I needed to go to Toys R Us, did not offer me options or ask me any questions. THAT is why I walked out. I gave my $200 to Evolution Music. Their customer service is outstanding.
6. The Music Shoppe Inc.
Address: 1540 E College Ave #4, Normal, IL 61761 , Milford , Illinois , United States
Very professional and helpful staff. They will help you whether you are new to music or a seasoned musician.
Great sales and instrument repair department!
I worked with Tony to do a setup and to replace the pickups in my PRS S2. Even when there was a problem with the new pickups, Tony was great to work with the pickup maker to get a new one sent out. I can’t recommend Tony and The Music Shoppe enough! They are amazing and Tony knows what he is doing! Go see them at The Music Shoppe!
Great variety fast friendly professional service reasonably priced items
I have to say I really liked The Music Shoppe! An excellent store.
I finally visited the shop to get a couple boxes of guitar strings. I just didn’t feel like ordering online. I want to see merchandise in-person!
Wonderful, friendly staff in the store. Great instrument selections.
The store was bigger than I thought, a pleasant surprise.
Make yourself feel good, check out an instrument for yourself, live…. talk to staff about what you’re looking for. Sorry, but I love these “real” businesses.
Full line music store. I was looking at guitars and basses. Lots of accessories.
They’re expensive, the cables and accessories they sell will usually cost nearly twice in price, just go on reverb or guitarcenter and order online instead. Saving customers money. The place is fairly quiet for a music shop and they have great service and employees though, I just wouldn’t suggest buying any accessories or equipment stuff like cables for electric instruments.
Us as parents made a mistake about payments on my son’s sax so they did what there Right was and got it back so we went in and bought one from them paid it full out that same day we bought it they informed the music teacher to take it they were picking it up the following Friday so my son had it removed from him in front of his classmates just before his Christmas concert he was crushed at something he was looking forward in doing
we had receipt for sax which we paid cash for so with them doing this my son no longer wants to do band or music just because the people at the music shop if I could give them negative 5 star I would who would tell a music teacher to take away a sax that was paid for from a child for no reason at all I hope u go out of business?
7. North Shore Music
Address: 405 1/2 Linden Ave, Wilmette, IL 60091 , Milford , Illinois , United States
Highly recommend! Alejandro went out of his way to accommodate us and it is much appreciated. So nice to deal with a music shop that is not corporate, wonderful to have someone who is proud of his craft and supportive of the community as well as their love of music!!!
This is an awesome place to improve your skills in music. The owner really knows his stuff and the staff is always helpful when it comes to rescheduling lessons. Can’t recommend enough.
My 13 year-old son has been taking drum lessons at North Shore Music for 2 years. He’s also in the studio’s band camp which places him with other students to form a rock band. They perform in public around Wilmette. He absolutely loves it and so do we parents. Alejandro and his staff are terrific!
8. Tobias Music
Address: 5013 Fairview Ave, Downers Grove, IL 60515 , Milford , Illinois , United States
Great family owned music shop. Wonderful inventory but, more importantly, it is owned wonderful people. Online or in person, this shop is well worth a visit.
Paul gave my son a great deal on a Martin guitar for his birthday. Fantastic store. Very knowledgeable. Highly recommend.
I went in because of their ads and I like small family shops. Just walking in you feel welcome. I am an old beginner. They treated me as well as some of their regular “pros” that were hanging around the shop. They represent many brands, but their collection of Taylors and Martins is outstanding. They took a lot of time with me and helped me find what I really wanted without pressure. Whenever I’m in the neighborhood, I stop in. They have a beautiful comfortable “lounge” showroom. Great atmosphere.
They are more of a acoustic guitar place not really a place for bass players .
***EDIT***
So, I am knocking down my review from five stars to three; due to my most recent experience a couple months after the first one. So I reached backout to buy another guitar (place order) as I really wanted an AD22e or another model I can’t remember, but after confirming they could place the order I let them know that I wanted the AD22e and to provide me the full price so we could close the deal and they went silent, mind you I didn’t even get a copy of the receipt from my AD27e that never came which I had also requested from the last conversation.
I did finally get my guitar ordered but I had a national retailer place the order. I was disappointed I didn’t hear back from Tobias Music about completing the purchase and obtaining a copy of the receipt for my AD27e that never came.
** original **
Just bought an AD27e (Taylor) from them after finding it for sale online. it was a great buying experience. I’m a lefty, buying guitars online is the norm, and most of the time guitars I buy take a day or two to pack and ship. we had a few emails back and forth and they were quick to respond and very professional. These guys had it packed and shipped the same day, and I didn’t place my order until after lunch; that’s service.
They also took the time to dial the guitar in; it came with the action set and was tuned ready to play out of the box. Paul did a great job and really made this buying experience easy, and hassle free. I’ll have to check back often to see what other lefty guitar they get in. If I have the chance, I will buy from them again.
9. Make’n Music
Address: 780 W Frontage Rd, Northfield, IL 60093 , Milford , Illinois , United States
THE boutique shop of Chicago. Guitar Center is for kids. Make’n Music is for musicians and rich dudes 🙂
Service is in the vein of a fine violin shop. Only place you’re gonna find Bogner, Suhr, Dr. Z, Tom Anderson, without those low end models of Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, ESP, etc. that frankly take up too much damn room. Every piece of equipment here is quality over quanity. The guy who reviewed and said that there aren’t as many guitars is dead wrong. I plan to purchase a Rasmus because it’s the only dealer in town I can find of REAL instruments for real players.
This is the finest guitar shop in Chicago in my opinion. They are the only authorized dealer of Tom Anderson Guitars, which by itself makes this place worth your time. Probably the most important thing though is the fact that these guitars are expertly set up and maintained.
I had a G&L ASAT Bluesboy that had been giving me grief for years. I had it set up multiple times, refretted by Specimen guitar shop, and it always had this weird thing going on. I took it in here and they (Third Coast, the folks who handle setups etc. when brought in here) were able to diagnose and fix the issue. Now it plays perfectly (almost as good as the Tom Andersons).
You can trust these guys, bottom line.
Thay have been a loyal friend to me since the 70’s. And they love my dog Ariel…
Great people. Real nice, know what they’re talking about. Take their gear over the local competition because they just know it better, even if it isn’t spooky. Their techs are very likely great but weren’t in-site available when I visited. It’s still a beautiful shop.
Great service
check em out
It is always closed. Make sure you check its web site to see if it is open.
Store is really different from the earlier locations off Milwaukee Ave., Ohio St., and Artesian. Even the store off Hubbard – after the move from Artesian – had far more inventory.
Though I could be wrong, it seems as though the days of finding tons of high-end boutique, FCS, GCS and PRS guitars hanging on the walls is gone. Also gone are the days of 8-10 really cool high-end amp makers being represented, including several products on the floor from builders like Elmwood, Bogner, Matchless, Victoria, Fuchs and on and on. The effects offerings are also a small portion of what they used to be.
Not quite sure what happened to the store the past couple/few years. Used to be, far and away, the finest boutique shop in the country (used to get regular visits from cats like Billy Gibbons, Keith Richards and many others that would fly in just to buy gear).
I wish the current guys the best of luck. And hope they have a long and healthy ride. Would be cool to see the store return to its former glory years, when it was The Grand Daddy of cool gear.
THESE GUYS THINK THEY ARE SO SMART!!!!!!!!!
10. Milford
Address: Illinois 60953 , Milford , Illinois , United States
11. Capital City Music
Address: 3700 Wabash Ave, Springfield, IL 62711 , Milford , Illinois , United States
I went in a couple days ago, looking for bass guitars; the selection of which was, unsurprisingly, limited, but what else can you expect? I walked out with an acoustic electric bass (with good strings and perfect intonation) for a fair price. The experience was pleasurable overall, and, next time I’m in the market for a new instrument, this is where I’ll go first.
The staff is helpful and friendly. Many pianos and instructs available.
Good place to get anything to do with music nice people!!!
Pretty good inventory from starter instruments to grand pianos. Laid back atmosphere.
My go-to music store. Good selection. Always helpful
Very limited selection of music, they have lots of guitars and pianos, though.
I’ve been to a lot of music stores, and let me tell ya, avoid the this at all costs. Prices are High, equipment is below average, and the customer service is a joke. If you don’t mind paying top prices for sub standard gear and having to staff look down at you like you owe them something well this is the place for you . Two thumbs down
I hate doing this because I want to like music stores but if service is gonna be like this, everyone myswell DIY at home and heed this warning. I’ve had a few guitars setup there which is what I’m always needing done, new guitars etc, well I happen to be changing the strings on my Chapman that I had setup there and the low E saddle of the Floyd Rose came loose and the saddle screw fell out and that’s strange as you tighten them down. Well here’s what I discovered. Either dude lost the original saddle screw or he broke it somehow, but sitting in place of the original saddle screw is a too small saddle screw from a different bridge! It had been set in there and the string was tightened until it held the saddle in place! Like magic no screwing required! This guaranteed that as soon as the string tension came loose the saddle and screw would come loose every time NOT like it’s supposed to. Soooo sad service especially since luckily here at home I have many of those saddle screws laying around. It would have been better service to call me/order the correct part than to wait for me to get home figure out that I have the wrong part and have to deal with it myself. Smh.
Ignored from the time I walked into the store until I left.Walked a circle throughout looking for help only to find employees chatting it up. Both looked up at me and quickly turned away and continued talking to each other. Will never get my business.
