This review is specifically for Harold, the instrument technician.
I have brought two instruments to Harold over the past five years. The first was an odd ES-335 knock off. Harold did a solid job making it playable. Low action. No buzzing. Everything I asked for.
Today, however, I picked up my Fender Jazz Bass. I have never, in my entire life, played an instrument that plays as well as this bass. This is no exaggeration. I’m a fourth generation guitarist and second generation bassist. My uncle was a luthier and a guitar tech. My closest friends are musicians and I’ve played countless instruments.
I’ve read online that Harold works magic on Fender instruments and I completely agree with this. He is a setup magician and I will forever be returning here for as long as Harold is around. And if he goes elsewhere I am going to track him down.
Gucci
Cool selection of stuff, lots of vintage amps and guitars
Bought a guita there yeRs ago. Just visiting the store ‘off Highland’ for the first time. Nice array of guitars !
Let’s just say that my kind ain’t welcome
I guess they have some unique items which is cool but the folks behind the counter really seemed like they were annoyed to put their conversation on hold in order to help me and were also EXTREMELY condescending and pretentious. I’m a fairly experienced musician and these guys spoke to me as if I was completely ignorant and always would be.
I left this store just a moment ago after being asked to leave because I had not yet made a purchase. I had originally intended to pick up a few packs of strings for my acoustic, now I’m glad I had not. I stopped by today with my friend who had told me about this store. He has been a customer of this store before and had always told me the staff here was friendly and that they have great service. We spent roughly 45 minutes in the store before the man at the counter, whom we had previously overheard talking to another customer about us saying, “What’s the deal with these two jokebags?” told us to get out of the store because we had not yet bought anything. We promptly left the store and I soon received a text from my friend saying that he had gone back inside to try to clear things up with the man that was working the counter and he told me that the man said he was not feeling well and is looking to close the store early. So if his goal is to minimize the business they get to close up early, he is doing very well.

If you ever need your instrument fixed, Art’s is the place for you
Super helpful!! I needed some help with the pegs on my violin. Not only did they fix the pegs, they also tuned it for me, got a better fit for my chin rest, and helped me find a neck rest for around $20. Definitely going back here if I need anything else!!
Great experience grabbing a new sax mouthpiece. Ask for Tully for the best help and make sure you bring your sax to try out the top brands in the store.
Big
I called and they didnt answear
changed to 4 stars because service isn’t as good as it used to be. It is now only ok. Was also very expensive.
I will never shop here again. They take advantage of the schools and over price. They finance at 300% interest. Total ripoff.
I spent $3500 on a saxophone here and when I tried to sell it back they offered me $150 even though it was in good condition just an fyi
Be a good place for a music shop that sales and buy instruments but they can’t do anything but sale with out the manager so if u need to sale something don’t go here
4. Bailey Brothers Music Company
Address: 4673 US-280 Suite # 7, Birmingham, AL 35242 , Minor , Alabama , United States
Great music store, lots of selections across a broad range of musical products and brands. AND, it’s a local company. I support local.
WOW.. being from out of state and working in Birmingham I enjoy seeing new music stores and Bailey Brothers in one of the best in the country for sure. An amazing assortment of instruments and amps from the highest level to beginner.. no other place like it.. and the staff is fantastic!! friendly and knowledgeable.. unreal.. I purchased a few needs but will be back for sure.. cant say enough good things about this place.. !!! (great used gear as well!!)
Always great customer service helpful and friendly! And great selection too no my first or my last purchase from them!
Great customer service. Great selection. However, I was NOT thrilled to see their logo custom printed onto the snare head I bought. Would have received 5 stars if not for that. Going to remove it with some acetone.
Usually get good service, but I took my guitar nut to be repaired after my guitar took a spill. I let them know the guitar had fallen and hoped they would fix. The nut was replaced poorly but the guitar had a buzz. Took it back 2 more times. The last visit, the person in charge of the repair (2 weeks later)said I had heavy fingers and raised the stings to a height that made the guitar unplayable. I took to another repair shop and they repaired the nut replaced by Bailey Brothers found a couple of uneven frets repaired the frets adjusted the neck and had to re-setup the guitar from the disaster repair at Bailey Brothers. If in need of repairs I will never return to this store.
good staff well organize not bad products
I would use profane language, but it would not adequately describe the crap this company pulled. Basically, I took my brother to trade a PRISTINE first-owner amp, and we could prove it, in for a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, used, which is of equal value….and my brother coughed up $100.
I took off work to take him to initially buy the thing. I took off work to bring it in for repair when we discovered sticky crap on the power tubes, and I ended up working until 10PM thanks to these guys. They wanted me to take off work again, after having spent 5 hours in their store. I basically spoke up and said, he might be the customer, but I’m the wheelman, and I’m furious. I mentioned the fact of the wasted gas, wasted trips, and the at least 6 hours of driving they were expecting of me.
They checked OUR amp out very thoroughly, and even treated my brother like a criminal, saying they are getting his DL in case he stole it. SERIOUSLY people….
I tried to talk some business sense with them, asking them to do something for the trouble, and it would not have taken much. They said no. Then I asked if they can just reverse everything since ALL of the stuff was still in the store…. The guy made up a story of a law, which actually doesn’t exist, then claiming he has to charge extra to reverse it all. Guitar Center evidently doesn’t know about this (fake) law.
Not ONLY that, but the smug, d-bag attitude that the guy gave me when pushing my brother, his CUSTOMER aside to say “you don’t think we’re trying to rip you off do you?” He did this to put me on the spot, and tried to make me look like the bad guy.
In the end, my brother spent another $170 to get a new model. In the end, he got what he wanted, but we are both appalled by how the guy behaved to our faces. Beware, their used gear has NO warranty, but they represented at sale that they would ensure the gear works if something went wrong like the day we get it… Well… it did.
You don’t take someone’s $700 amp + $100 and then give them junk, and not try to do something proper after dragging someone thru hell. That’s the bottom line. I tried more than the guy at this store. You won’t catch us in that place again.
Considering the tens of thousands that my brother spent with other companies, Bailey Brothers missed an opportunity… Not good business. Dishonest, rude, and outright condescending. Smiled at us when we expressed our frustration with the runaround….
I came in here the other day and they were incredibly overbearing and checked in on me every 30 seconds. From the second I walked in they were all up in my face and insisted on providing an address and phone number whenever I paid which I fully expect to be sold somewhere. I don’t know if they’re struggling to keep the lights on or something but the amount of customer service was way too much and came across as pushy and rude. Literally just let me shop.
No stars really. Not a very good merchant. Let someone use my credit card number without the card! Be careful!
5. Guitar Pro’s LLC
Address: 224 Main St, Trussville, AL 35173 , Minor , Alabama , United States
The coolest little shop with a great selection and people who care what you want out of your equipment! The sound you want to achieve is here, just come by and look around! Always something new to see! I’m headed down there today in fact!
Awesome folks, and a nice guitar selection. First time in the store but they really made me feel like family. Go here. Buy stuff.
Tara amd Bruce are great people and everyone should come here for their musical needs. Drums, amps, guitars, you name it!
Great people and fair prices. Support your local music store!
Have a decent variety of all different kinds of cords and instruments and the guitars rule great prices too. And the lady in there is always super sweet
Nice selection of new and used guitars. Needs a jam space though..
I will never set foot in this place again. Not that they will care. Thought I would give it another chance after several years. Nothing has changed so now I know for sure.
I bought a guitar for $2,875 from this shop online and they listed it as mint condition. I had to take it to a local luthier to have the frets polished because they were so dirty the guitar was unplayable. The shop refused to even split the cost ($50), wow! Incredible.
Accused me of taking out a screw, when all I asked was for the value of what it would cost to fix that. I fixed it myself 16$ out of my own pocket for a new screw, set of strings, and labor on my workbench at home. I thought about going to small claims court, for not selling me a guitar in the condition they claimed on reverb. I’d been looking for this guitar for a while, I didn’t want to just return it. I just wanted it in the condition that I saw it in and felt insulted when they instantly made me out to be at fault even after sending pictures moments after receiving it from UPS and to top it off I even have video of when I first opened it on the CCTV at work. Overall poor online experience.
6. Cole Band Instruments
Address: 3076 McFarland Blvd #11, Northport, AL 35476 , Minor , Alabama , United States
What an amazing resource! Roger has saved our bacon the past three weeks as marching band and the new school year ramped up. He found a fantastic used step-up trombone in excellent condition that we purchased for a very fair price, then he cleaned and repaired our old trombone so it could serve as my son’s marching trombone that will undoubtedly see some abuse, was able to trade my daughter’s student flute for something we valued, saved the first day of class by having the right mouthpiece in stock, and then ordered a cordura case for us so my svelte son will have straps/backpack style to carry the horn around. Wonderful people who have seriously saved me so much time, money, and effort. Whatever you do, be sure to ask Roger to ultra-sonic clean your instrument. He turned our old, barely serviceable, inexpensive King trombone into a smooth-sliding, marching ready horn. Thank you Cole Band Instruments!
They were able to fix my daughter’s clarinet quickly
Excellent customer service! They treat you like family.
Nice and very helpful
Its good service very pricey though

Nice and they welcome us with that good down south hospitality.

Helpful staff
Booked two parties at once and tried to make us wait 2 hours to start ours when we were the ones on the books. Compromised with an agreement then they did not hold up on their agreement. Man was VERY rude!
$70 restocking fee!
Called at 6 to inquire about a product, no answer, arrived at the location with the associates vehicle parked outside before 6:30 door was locked, called again no answer.

Address: 309 Hargrove E Rd, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401 , Minor , Alabama , United States
If you’re having any kind of issue with your guitar….electronics or adjustments, just ask for Jeff. He’s the best technician and repairman I know. He’s stays on the job until it’s done right. Reasonable rates too!!!
I love this place. They’re real musicians that actually want to help you. It’s not the type of place where they breathe down your neck and pressure you into buying something. They want you to find exactly what you’re looking for and if they don’t have it they’ll order it for you or wish you luck on your hunt for the perfect guitar. I’ve been to countless shops and it’s safe to say this is the most comfortable one with the best staff. And they have a really cool unique inventory. Everything from top of the line boutique amps and guitars to beginner equipment and countless accessories. I haven’t had any repairs done yet but i’m gonna be getting some pick-up wiring checked out soon and it’s safe to say that I trust these guys with it.
Great service. Great selection. Very helpful
Knowledgeable
I dropped by to look at some used Guitars and was greeted appropriately. I didn’t find what I was looking for but the guys were feuendly
Knowledgeable staff. Good guitar selection
Horrible I wasn’t even allowed to approach the merchandise cases where I could see the items on display.
The person who answers the phone is freakishly weird. Everything I ever ask do they have he says he doesn’t know what that is. PLEASE FIRE THIS NONCHALANT MAN. He creeps me out and does not know anything about music. Please get another worker gosh
Tried to give a used bass with a part of a fret missing

Absolutely love these guys. These guys are very kind and will help you with anything you need musically. And if they can’t (which is very rare) they will point you to those who can help. Great prices and even better people.
Lance and Tracy are nice folks. They have a good selection of strings and accessories. Neat place for obscure instruments.
11. Alabama Music
Address: 2450 Mall Rd, Florence, AL 35630 , Minor , Alabama , United States
The people here are amazing. I went to get my cork fixed, and they immediately assured me that it would be fixed within the week.
Greated when we walked in and helped immediately. They answered all our questions and took the time with my daughter to answer the questions she had. Great place and good prices.
Quality equipment large selection of strings Price is Right
Its a good place to go for your music needs.
Service here is usually hit and miss. One day is fine, the next is worse.
This store offers everything you’d need for band (and some orchestra) including, but not limited to: mouthpieces, sticks, neck straps, lessons, practice pads, picks, amps, music books, cleaning supplies, and you can also (I believe) order instruments from a catalog.
To save yourself a lot of time and some irritation pointed at you, try to have a closer idea of what you want instead of just saying “I need reeds” or “I need drumsticks”. You will have a much better time there if you do.
The “here or there” aspect of the service as well as some questionable prices on a few items is the reason for my score. If you go in on a good day and don’t mind the prices, by all means, this is a 5 star place.
TL;DR: Whether you’re a band director in need of some instrument repairs before band camp or you need some cool sticks for your mallet recital, Alabama Music has got your back. Just keep on the lookout for good service and bad prices (not saying that it always happens, probably just a fluke)
Have a good day 🙂
$35 for a flute cleaning kit? That says it all.
Researched music stores that “buy” instruments. This store popped up among others. Called store. A woman answered. She was cold & rude. I inquired & she said No. Their competitor also confirmed that they buy instruments.

It’s a great place all repairs have been flawless the only thing is it opens later in the morning which can sometimes be a problem.
Friendly staff.
Good place to buy musical instruments.
If I could put no stars I would. The rep came to our school through a teacher that was associated with this company. I was not prepared for the overwhelming over priced instruments thrown at me. Being strapped in budget and wanting my kid to do well, we settled for the “cheapest” model, which was still $3000. It was a very battered and very used saxophone. Don’t get scammed!
Taken advantage of! I purchased a trombone for my son, Feb 2019, as he was in the school band. For irrelevant circumstances my son is not continuing band. The cost of the trombone was $1100. Six months later I take the trombone back to Art’s Music store to sell it back to them. The store manager told me he would give $90! The trombone had been gently used. I didn’t expect that low of an offer. I feel as though Art’s Music is taking advantage of the fact that they are one of few music stores in the Montgomery area. My son will continue in playing music but we will NEVER spend another $ with Art’s Music. Parents please shop around and know who you are dealing with!
I contacted this store about purchasing our instrument. I was instructed to contact their salesman, Mike, to set that up. He picked up our intrustment and advised in a couple of days we would hear back. After 3 weekdays, I called to check in, their staff acts like they have no clue what is happening. I must’ve repeated myself 10 times before I was told that the manager had not reviewed our instrument for purchase, so I waited several more weekdays. I called back again, got the same runaround and was told again that the manager hadn’t been in the office and had not reviewed it still. I was told she would let me know something soon, but the manager had to review it and he was out at a doctors appointment. Literally 2 minutes later, the girl called me back and said they do not carry Blessing instruments. I laughed and said okay, I’ll just have it picked up and brought back to me. Basically this company lies to customers and when they’re too lazy to inspect an instrument that they asked me to send in and then say they don’t carry that brand. Mind you, my instrument was picked up and taken to this store that is 200 miles away. What a huge waste of time and energy on my part and the salesmen. Poor customer service all the way around.
13. Counts Brothers Music Inc
Address: 713 Waverly Ave, Muscle Shoals, AL 35661 , Minor , Alabama , United States
My go to store. Knowledgeable and helpful. Use their luthier services and amp repair services. In the last two years have bought two acoustic guitars, one new tele pro, new vibrolux, cables and a new set of tama drums. I Never try to negotiate prices because I want our local stores to thrive. Im a weekend regular. This may seem silly but Im knocking off a star because for a regular customer who does spend money and not just kick tires they should throw in a little something every now and again. A t shirt, a cable. A guitar strap, etc. When i bought the drum set and acoustic on the same day i picked up 6 generic guitar picks for which I was charged. Personally I would thrown those in for free. Hope this doesnt sound petty and this will continue to be my store for as long as they will have me. This is meant as constructive criticism only.
Great shop had lots of stuff new and used !! Good people great store!! A must stop kinda place !!
Always very friendly service and very clean store
Over priced needed Reed’s and I can get them 10 for 28-32 dollars any where. Theirs was 10 bucks as. And I had to have them that day. Nope I’m done with them
Seems like some decent prices but very stale service.the blonde at the front desk acts like it hurts her face to smile r speak someone done told her she cute 1 to many times
14. The Fret Shop
Address: 309 Jordan Ln NW, Huntsville, AL 35805 , Minor , Alabama , United States
I’ve been going to the Fret Shop for guitars, lessons, and accessories for over 15 years. I’ve taken lessons from two different guitar instructors, and they were both absolutely wonderful. I wouldn’t purchase an instrument from any other place in town. These guys stand by their products, and their tech does an amazing job as well. I can’t recommend these guys enough.
This place had the most knowledgeable staff and trade-in you like family they went to no ends to help the customer or me and my son and knew everything there was to know about what he wanted I recommend anybody that is interested in guitars to go there instead of one of the big conglomerates there are because their personable service is better than just somebody that doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
So if you are reading these I bet you see the polarity of the reviews. People seem to love it or hate it. The difference is who you deal with there. I’ve always seen 3 guys and one young lady. There is a big guy with a goatee who isn’t friendly at all and you can tell he gets annoyed if you play with an instrument. Then there is a pretty generic looking guy that does most of the repair work. He is the embodiment of the a*hole guitar shop/ comic book store type guy. You’re beneath him and he makes sure you know it. If you can get past these two the young lady is very nice, and I’ve seen her make women more comfortable in what is usually a very male atmosphere. She also seems to know most of the store’s products equally so if you are looking for a dulcimer ask her. The last guy is the only reason I still shop there. Tall, skinny dude with a Rock a Billy haorcut. Hands down one of the nicest people I have ever met in a store. He could not care less if you came in there without a dollar to your name or a single chord to play. He loves music and wants to spread that around. If anyone there had the skill to warrant being haughty it would be him, but he is the last one there to do anything other than brighten your day. I take friends in there who have social anxiety etc. or are just nervous because they don’t play and he puts them right at ease. I would love to write this place off, but one great employee can make a difference. He doesn’t even know the difference he has made with some of my Army buddies that can barely handle being out of the house, but thanks to him there is one place they can go feel like a regular guy perusing a store. When my son is old enough he is who I want him to take lessons from. Truthfully he deserves a better place to work at.
Wide variety of stringed instruments. Helpful but not pushy staff. Only saw one acoustic\electric bass. Good deals to be found from a local business but do your research.
Nice folks and a quaint, decent size of a guitar shop! Unfortunately the service didn’t blow me away. I dropped off a guitar to have it cleaned up and checked for intonation. I don’t think any of the saddles were even moved. I ended up having to intonate the strings myself when I got a decent tuner in front of me.
I won’t shop there anymore. I needed a small screw for a PRS truss rod cover and the luthier wouldn’t even take the time to speak to the young man helping me, or look through his box of old screws to help. Bad customer service.
I’ve always tried to buy from The Fret Shop vs. Guitar Center and have often made purchases there. Including a Martin guitar. Good thing he stays in the back. He cost the store future sales, with his attitude.
I had previously left a 3 star review due to being given a random string after one in the $15 set I had just bought was found defective as I put them on….did not want a random string, I wanted what I paid for!
Now recently I went in trying to find a small part I needed to repair my guitar. The guy behind the counter said, “I’m pretty sure the repairman stocks those. When my colleague is finished with the customer he is helping I will find out.”
The colleague in question was the owner, and when he got through he informed me, “you can bring the guitar in, we will write up a work order, put it in the queue, and see if we can fix it”.
I don’t care to pay someone to put on a small part that I can put on myself which probably cost less than $1! I drove to Harmony Sounds in 5 points and Bill (the owner) gave me one with a smile. That is twice that Bill at Harmony has helped me out by giving me a part free of charge. I know it’s a very inexpensive part, but I really appreciate Bill at Harmony’s attention and focus on customer relations. Bill gets all my future business which would have been split between him and the Fret Shop…..actually heading there today to finish paying off a $3,000 instrument I bought that day after he s graciously gave me the part I needed!
Will not return to the fret shop in the foreseeable future!
This used to be a good guitar shop. Now, it’s mediocre at best. If you’re not in the market for either a Taylor acoustic guitar or something cheap that’s a bit overpriced, you’re wasting your time going in this store. The strings are double the price I pay online. I would pay a little more for local service, but I’m not going to pay double. They don’t have most of the stuff that they show on their website, and they have a lot of small items in the store that are not on their website. The service is not friendly at all. The man behind the counter should try a smile once in a while.
They better get it together or they’ll be going the way some of the other local shops went, and sooner rather than later. The franchise and online stores will swallow them whole.

Helpful staff. Great selection of electric instruments!
Always helpful staff
friendly staff, great selection, need to turn house music off, so I can hear the instrument I am potentially going to purchase.
Encontré lo que buscaba
Clean well set store. Everything is easy to find amd the staff great you willingly and cheerfully. This store is recommended.
Friendly but limited selection
Great music store. Very helpful and friendly staff
Wish this was still true.. horrible experience recently when attempting to purchase a expensive acoustic guitar. 6/27/22 Went back to make a 2k+ purchase and was informed that I was given the wrong price by a salesman 2 days before. They tried to give other options but not enough to compensate for what was told to me. Very disappointed in a music store I’ve been loyal to for years.
I tried selling a trumpet to these folks the other day. Simple enough, right? Well I though so. I went in Monday and was told their trumpet guy would be in Tuesday, so I left it with them. Wednesday afternoon rolls around and I hadn’t heard from them, so I went in and nobody could tell me what was going on with it, so I left and waited. After not hearing a word by Friday I just picked it up and brought it back home. I can’t speak for the buying experience at this store but the selling experience is awful.

Great people!
Love Andy’s music, they are my go to music store!
Good folks who work at the store. Great customer service and always willing to help take care of your musical and instrument needs. Prices are pretty fair as well!!
This is a nice place with a wide selection of instruments and other musical paraphernalia. My only issue is that the staff were cold/snobbish toward my brother and me. Could’ve just been my impression… though, they weren’t very helpful when we asked questions. Anyway, overall a good store.
Very nice place got whatever you want music wise
Andy’s is great if you know what you want, but don’t plan on testing anything. I had planned on buying an Epiphone half stack because the price was right and I needed something more powerful than my current amp. But I also had my eyes on two similarly priced Fender and Crate amps. In my limited experience with amp manufacturers, I wanted to test all three. I looked for about 15 minutes. I actually tested for about 10 minutes and at an appropriate sound level that was not obnoxiously loud.
Before I could decide on which one I wanted to spend money on with a limited budget of about $600 the sales rep came and suggested that I stop playing because the owner was becoming perturbed and that I was disturbing other customers. After looking around and realizing there were no other customers, I realized that either A) the sales rep was lying and being a jerk or B) the owner/manager was being a jerk. Either way, I decided that this was not a place that I wanted to give business to, so I took my business back home to Music-Go-Round in Mississippi where everyone is laid back and more than willing to help. I’ve even had the sales reps jam with me while testing out equipment there.
Granted, I’m not the most gifted guitarist, but what I play, I play well. There was no excuse for how I was treated. I’d take Guitar Center over Andy’s any day when it comes to music shops in Mobile.
Good for guitar strings that’s about it
Terrible place to do business. Failed promises and wasted time. Not willing to negotiate. Will not answer questions directly and instead will offer you a service plan. My daughter brought her clarinet in multiple times and they said nothing wrong with it. Today they said it has needed regulated for over 6 months. DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE. They are only in it for the money.
Previously, when my daughter brought the clarinet in to be looked at for the continuing problem, we were going to buy a new clarinet when they offered no interest for 6 mos. financing. The associate told me to go to the website and I wasted about 45 minutes worth of time to find out they required over 20% interest, to the tune of well over $300. When I asked the associate why what they told me was false, I was told they have no control over what happens on the website with the financing.
Contrary to the response given to this review, none of what was offered here was mentioned in the phone call. The clarinet was brought in and told nothing wrong with it. I went to another music store and had my daughter buy a professional clarinet for not much more than Andy’s wanted for the Intermediate.
I specifically asked in my phone call if there are any incentives offered and was flat told no.
The response by the owner is crafted to make you think they are great at service by mentioning the rental and the last service time, but if they were really that great, they would know that the clarinet is currently in their shop for regulation. If it has only been 6 mos. since it was serviced and there is a problem with it where it has been brought in at least twice to be looked at since then, why was I told today on the phone that it has needed a regulation for 6 mos?
I now know there is another option in MS and should it still not work when we get it back, it will go there. Yes, in the past we have done business with Andy’s as they hinted at in their response, but when we are done with Andy’s, I will be extremely happy.
