Staff is kind and helpful, always a fun place to visit
One of my favorite stores shop at. They also have private lessons.
Great deals, nice service team.
They didn’t have the Yamaha modx on display
SERVICES where great, but they barely talk to me and no one smiles at that store. Not good for Business.
Rude. Don’t waste your time. Go to Players in Worth or GC Country Club or GC Central. I purchased from Players because it was closer to the airport. Stock is poor. Attitudes are poor like they don’t want to be bothered.
Don’t go here. Shelves are empty. They have guitars and strings but if you want anything like home studio stuff audio interfaces midi controllers just stay home.
Don’t waste your time coming here. The general manager gets no good review. Only gave it a one star because of the sales rep I had helping me at the time.
2. Chicago Music Exchange
Address: 3316 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60657 , New City , Illinois , United States
CME is the stuff. I’ve purchased multiple items from them online, and I love stopping through when I’m in Chicago to see what they have in store. Pretty amazing selection of guitars,
Amps, effects, and be sure to check out the bass-ment. (You should follow them on IG) Tons of cool stuff, great staff, and did I mention they have tons of cool stuff?
Awesome place. You can play any guitar you want, no matter how much it costs. It’s also not uncommon to bump elbows with touring bands and celebrities.
Excellent customer service. Great selection of guitars.
Great place sweet selection and people
It’s good for guitar players
Pretty much professional people working there, honest.
Placed online order over a week ago and it still hasn’t shipped. I’ve been told repeatedly that the delay is due to a computer error and that the order would ship this or that day. Here I am however, still without the pedal I ordered last Thursday. In the mean time, CME has wasted no time in blowing my e-mail up with spammy ads. Will take my business else where in the future.
i don’t live near but i bought i cheeseburger once
Extremely expensive shop !!!
3. Shake Shop
Address: 3228 W Fullerton Ave, Chicago, IL 60647 , New City , Illinois , United States
I first brought him my Fender Strat to do some basic maintenance, Great Job! Then I brought my Charvel for maintenance and to replace pickups even Greater Job. They both sound Great!
Reasonably priced and high-quality work. Both dudes are super friendly and Matt took the time to explain a bunch of stuff about my amp and didn’t try to sell me on unnecessary work. Highest recommendation.
Great work, at a fair price. Def check it out!
Purchased a second hand guitar and needed to get it set up so I figured I’d try a local shop. Tom got my guitar play ready with a full set up as well as a fret crown and polish. Price was reasonable and you get exactly what’s detailed in the package you choose. Even though the frets were worked on no cleaning/polishing of the fret board or body of the guitar, which is included in most other set up packages at other shops. Overall I would come back as Tom was extremely friendly set my guitar up well.
The people here are very kind, informative, and professional.
They take precaution during this pandemic and that is a good sign that they really do care about their customers.
4. Third Coast Guitar and Amp Repair
Address: 159 N Racine Ave #1, Chicago, IL 60607 , New City , Illinois , United States
I love third coast! They always do such a great job. They repaired a crack in my finish on my Taylor and it is beautiful. So thankful for these guys and their careful work!
Expert Craftsmen, Sincere & Honest with Patience for customers situations with all instruments.
For 15 years I have never been disappointed.
If you want the Truth about any Issue on Your Axe this is the Place cause they don’t have time to Waste.
They want your Business & Want your Guitars in A1 condition.
Only thing they Can’t fix is Stupidity!
Great place! They were recommended to me by several musicians. I brought a ES335 in for a finish repair. Chris (owner) after viewing the guitar determined it was a manufacturer defect and could not be properly repaired. Chris handled all the details with the manufacturer and I received a new ES335. Third Coast is a great advocate for musicians. I see why they were highly recommended. Good old fashioned customer Care.
Pretty good service here, workmanship is top notch. Good place to go for guitar repairs.
Nice place for amp or guitar repairs.
Good People who does great guitar repairs and upgrades.
I don’t often leave bad reviews for businesses, however I’ve made an exception for my experience with getting a bass repaired under warranty here. I’ll refrain from stating opinions and only describe the facts of what happened.
I brought the bass in on September 1st, confirmed with the receiving technician that the bad tuning machine would be covered under warranty, and stated that I wouldn’t want or need a setup, although he wrote “possible setup” on the work order. I was informed that the repair could take a week to a month, depending on how quickly Fender shipped the parts, and all tuners would be replaced.
After a couple weeks of radio silence, I called and was told that they hadn’t gotten a response from Fender and would try again. More weeks passed and eventually I found out, also by having to call them, that the tuners shipped on October 2nd. I waited through a month of silence, trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, before once again contacting them on November 7th only to be told that they had received the wrong tuners from Fender on October 22nd. I let them know that because of the unacceptable wait, I would be picking up the bass and to contact me when the tuners finally came in so I could bring it back. The next day, November 8th, I received a call that the bass had been fixed and was ready for pickup.
When picking the instrument up, it had only one new tuning machine which appeared to be an unbranded Chinese part which can be found cheaply on eBay, rather than a Jackson-branded tuner which would match the other three. The tech which handed me the guitar couldn’t explain what had been done. On top of that, I was handed a $70 bill for a setup which I had refused twice during the time they had the bass but which was performed anyway. (I wouldn’t request a service that costs almost half the price of the bass itself.) I gave two stars for this review because the technician was generous in admitting their mistake and allowing me to leave with the instrument, which still had three janky tuners after almost 10 weeks in the shop.
I believe that a lot of blame lay with Fender for not fulfilling their warranty obligations in a timely or competent manner. However, during the time they had the instrument, the techs at Third Coast were uncommunicative and aloof, and didn’t give me confidence in the quality of their work or their customer service. I will not bring any of my other instruments here for paid repairs or further warranty service.
The worst, dont use them, they destroyed a beautiful custom shop strat, and did a half ass job on the electronics of my curbow bass, hacks, scratched up my guitar and then said his incompetent repairman did not do it, then argued about it, very unprofessional.
Did a set-up on a collector’s fender j-bass. sounds and feels fantastic, ended up around $220 w/ fret leveling. best the bass has ever felt.
Brought an amp in too (head and cab) b/c of no output. They called me after two weeks saying it was fixed, but the head was still malfunctioning when I brought it home.
They had me bring it back in and gave me a call two days later to pick it up. They accused me of dropping it after I left.
1. An employee helped me carry my equipment out of the shop and put it in the car
2. I called two hours later after testing the head at home and brought it back the next day
3. At no point did I drop my head or even set it on the ground. Store to car, car to practice space, practice space to car, car to shop
I love the bass setup but do not appreciate being accused of mishandling my own equipment and paying for a repair on an amp that wasn’t done. Third Coast is great for guitars/basses, but bad for amps.
5. Out of the Past Records
Address: 4407 W Madison St, Chicago, IL 60624 , New City , Illinois , United States
Easily THE best record store I have ever been to. The staff was so kind and helpful. The selection was incredible, I’ve never seen so much music in one place. Even with the large selection, I was able to find the records I wanted right away, and I got them all for a fair price. I highly recommend coming here whenever you visit Chicago. I will definitely come back next time I’m in town.
Old finds
Over crowded with stuff
I spent almost 3 hours in this place, I was like a kid in a candy store…
Staff friendly and helpful store doesn’t seem very organized or clean
A great selection for Gospel vinyl, but the customer service sucks! The lady behind the counter has a very nasty attitude…
They have all the old records but the smell is very bad
6. A Sound Education
Address: 9433 Ogden Ave, Brookfield, IL 60513 , New City , Illinois , United States
A fantastic store with an amazing selection of gear. Super awesome and attentive staff, and the music teachers are awesome. Highly Recommend.
Great customer service! But they need a left handed guitar or two for us lefties!!!
All in all was a good experience. Came in to repair a much neglected guitar. Though the initial price was agreed to be under a certain amount, I went with the final amount that was given to me without much debate. The guitar came out great. Also got a keyboard at a great price. My only issue is that one bloated middle aged mummie that happened to be behind the counter, in the mornings. Does he work there? Is he a friend? The owner? Who knows! I say hi and no response? Why the long face??? Everyone else is friendly.
7. Make’n Music
Address: 780 W Frontage Rd, Northfield, IL 60093 , New City , Illinois , United States
I recently brought my 15 year old Seagull acoustic guitar in for service and I couldn’t be happier with the results. They got the guitar fixed up and playing great again!
Mike and the guys at Make’n Music were such a pleasure to deal with. I live in California and they’re located in Illinois. They had a guitar that I wanted and I didn’t have the cash readily available to buy it. But I did have a guitar that I knew had some good value. Long story short, I emailed them about doing a trade and how it would work out since we lived in different states. Mike, broke down the process and reassured me that the trade would go smoothly. The trade went as smooth as butter and needless to say I am a very happy customer and will definitely be doing more business with the guys at Make’n Music. Thanks guys!
OMG
Great service
Great store. Middle of nowhere. And definitely not the shop pictured. They had Les Pauls. But would not sell them. What’s up with that.? Very small selection in unless all you want is Airline guitars. No one said much. Just some people hanging out. Not clean and shiny like pictured. I believe they must have downsized big time. Not impressed. oh well. Ive been to the place pictured years ago. Impressive. What happened?
Great people. Real nice, know what they’re talking about. Take their gear over the local competition because they just know it better, even if it isn’t spooky. Their techs are very likely great but weren’t in-site available when I visited. It’s still a beautiful shop.
THESE GUYS THINK THEY ARE SO SMART!!!!!!!!!
Store is really different from the earlier locations off Milwaukee Ave., Ohio St., and Artesian. Even the store off Hubbard – after the move from Artesian – had far more inventory.
Though I could be wrong, it seems as though the days of finding tons of high-end boutique, FCS, GCS and PRS guitars hanging on the walls is gone. Also gone are the days of 8-10 really cool high-end amp makers being represented, including several products on the floor from builders like Elmwood, Bogner, Matchless, Victoria, Fuchs and on and on. The effects offerings are also a small portion of what they used to be.
Not quite sure what happened to the store the past couple/few years. Used to be, far and away, the finest boutique shop in the country (used to get regular visits from cats like Billy Gibbons, Keith Richards and many others that would fly in just to buy gear).
I wish the current guys the best of luck. And hope they have a long and healthy ride. Would be cool to see the store return to its former glory years, when it was The Grand Daddy of cool gear.
I was in the market for an American made Telecaster and they had nothing to show me. I had my brother n law tell me he wanted to take up bass and they don’t carry basses. I don’t understand what their market is? Another example of how bad the Chicago area music stores are.
8. Luscombe Music Inc
Address: 122 W Vallette St, Elmhurst, IL 60126 , New City , Illinois , United States
My daughter (6) takes piano lessons here and we have always had a pleasant experience! The staff is kind, friendly and helpful, the store is clean and the studios are nice. We are lucky to have such a wonderful gem right here in Elmhurst!
My boys love doing Music Together here. Miss Michelle is a great teacher
Yearly music by the pound sale is AMAZING
The teachers are great but the instruments and rentals are not so great, since the recent downsize, you can’t find some things there.
Extremely unprofessional. We got on the wait list, waited 2 months and got a call saying they had a spot for our day and time. We returned the call the next day saying we wanted to start as soon as possible. Office called us back saying the the instructor, Elizabeth Olson, should be calling us to make the final arrangements. She called the Sunday of MLK weekend, we were with family the next two days. We connected Tuesday and she wanted to do an assessment on the day we agreed on but a time that didn’t work and wasn’t agreed upon. She said she understood and arranged the following week on the original agreed upon time and day. We accepted, then she messages us and said she found another client that would use the extra day and bumped us out. When we questioned her motive, she said this is just business.
way over priced

10. Libertyville Music
Address: 401 S Milwaukee Ave, Libertyville, IL 60048 , New City , Illinois , United States
They were great. Everyone is knowledgeable and friendly and they took great care of me!
Recently brought an old guitar in for a repair and set up. They did a great job. I wish I would have brought it in years ago. Very affordable and excellent communicaton about the work was needed also.
Awesome staff! Matt does a killer guitar setup, and everyone their is so kind and accommodating. Thanks guys!
If they do not have it in stock, they will order it for you. Helpful staff.
Small shop with friendly, expert staff
Nice staff, low selection.
I’ve lived in Libertyville for fifteen years and I have really tried to support them. I teach band locally and have a busy professional performing schedule and would love to have a local business that I and my students could use for guitar and band instrument repair, and to buy supplies and equipment. My experience with them has been the worst every time I’ve been in. Their store stock is woeful. Twice I have left nice guitars with them to be set up. The first time I couldn’t tell that any work had been done, but there were little dents on the back of the neck. The next time (Iknow: why?) they just sat in the store for three weeks while I waited. Then when I picked them up (no work was ever done) there were marks all over the cases, as if they had been tossed around. They are rude, unprofessional and totally disorganized. Students I’ve taught who took lessons there (not at my suggestion) learned nothing. Just another jive guitar store run by morons.
Prices are extremely unreasonable not to mention the skinny kid behind the counter called me man so many times I thought I was in a Cheech and Chong movie.
11. Best Buy
Address: 1000 W North Ave, Chicago, IL 60642 , New City , Illinois , United States
Angie went above and beyond to help me with cell phone and fitbit! Thank you!
The best Best Buy in Chicago
The tech Guru there a very knowledgeable.
Johanna was very helpful. Thanks!
But if not her, we would have bad opinion about this store…
Good variety.
Associates/managers still can’t figure out how to process a simple return after 15 minutes
In and out
Don’t go to Best Buy to get a PC fixed, they will run a single diagnostic test and if they don’t find the problem you’re having, they’ll tell you nothing is wrong and give it back with repairing it. Take it to microcenter instead, they will actually find the problem and fix it.
12. NEWCITY
Address: 1457 N Halsted St, Chicago, IL 60642 , New City , Illinois , United States
I’d been searching for months to find the right Martin acoustic. While passing through the area for work I called and spoke to Lucas on their inventory and decided to stop by. He spent over an hour while we tried and compared a number of different guitars until I found the one. He threw a setup on it for me, and I walked out happy as could be with my new purchase. They have an excellent inventory of both acoustic and electric guitars and other stringed instruments as well as drum and percussion. Out of the all big box stores and shops I’ve been to in the last 2 or 3 months, over 9 states from Florida to Iowa, this place is the gem that I was looking for. Thanks Lucas, I appreciate ya
Piano lessons are awesome here
Very limited selection of music, they have lots of guitars and pianos, though.
Meh
I primarily look in the guitar/bass section, but good selection of instruments and helpful staff.
I am giving two stars because Matt Waldhoff took the time to speak with us in the store. Other than that, I’m not impressed. We were going to consign an expensive Clavinova with them. Upon looking at the contract emailed to us they wanted 40% of the price it sold for, which was satisfactory with us. What was not satisfactory was even thought they only charged $100 to pick-up the clavinova it appeared from the contract they wanted $100 to deliver it to the new owners. Also, they would take no responsibility for any damage that may occur to the unit while it was in their hands. As we had questions regarding that contract we contacted Matt Waldhoff two times via email, asking him to clarify certain aspects of the contract. He never responded back so I assumed they did not want our business. I ended up selling the clavinova on my own and kept the 40% they would otherwise have received. It is inexcusable to not return emails to clarify a contract and I can only assume he took offense that we had questions regarding a contract where they took the profit, but absolutely no responsibility for damage.
I’ve been to a lot of music stores, and let me tell ya, avoid the this at all costs. Prices are High, equipment is below average, and the customer service is a joke. If you don’t mind paying top prices for sub standard gear and having to staff look down at you like you owe them something well this is the place for you . Two thumbs down
The guest experience was alright, but after going in, and returning my item the staff took my return and assured me it was completed, I left and enjoyed the day, more than a week later and I have discovered the staff I talked to must have processed my return improperly since I have never received my refund on my bank statement and when I tried to call in to get the situation corrected I was told they could not find my transaction. Edit… The owner has personally reached out to me and has worked to correct the situation.
went to get my guitar set up and it came back out of tune, disappointed to say the least, reading other reviews it appears the staff might need more technical experience or organization
14. Best Buy
Address: 555 W Roosevelt Rd, Chicago, IL 60607 , New City , Illinois , United States
Store was in good shape. Easy to find what I needed with large banners over each department. Friendly and courteous staff.
Its Best Buy nothing new. Workers were cool
Julio, the Manager, was amazing yesterday. He spent hours trying to help me and my laptop situation. He was extremely attentive. While I did not like spending 4 hours in the store, I’m so grateful for his professionalism. Thank you Julio!
busy, they try hard however
Professional for the most part, quiet, and clean!!!… only negative was waiting 20 minuets to be seen even with an appointment…overall 8/10
So.so
Horrible Management and Customer Service. Why are they still open?
Disappointed with the customer service.
I purchased an open box computer that is Geek Squad Certified Excellent. A week after receive the computer, there were some issues that needed repair and was told by Best Buy online chat to visit a store for repair/replacement/refund. I went in to the store and spoke to the customer service about the repair and the first thing he said was they can’t repair it. He did not even mention Geek Squad. He offered only refund or pay more money to order a new one as there were no other open box. At no point did he attempt to make things right for the customer who purchased an “Excellent” open box laptop the company advertised. I had to drive to a different Best Buy 10 miles away to receive repair.
15. Best Buy
Address: 2100 N Elston Ave, Chicago, IL 60614 , New City , Illinois , United States
Friendly staff, easy to find merchandise and quick checkout….good experience..must definitely recommend this BBUY
Exelent prices!!
Great store with nice selection of different items.
They always have what I’m looking for but not at the best price. Amazon is the winner here.
Not much inventory on display for some reason
Got what I ordered in an hour. Why they couldn’t do that 3 days before baffles me. Went into store got product right away
customer service is supposed to help the customer solve problems. this person rationalized her way to not honor my warranty issue with one of the tvs. I will return to get it in writing so she takes responsibility for herself.
Tax there make the phone jump from 400 to 500 that’s crazy and they don’t even sell the case with phone’s they sell very deposited
Don’t buy a mobile phone here, at least if you’re a Verizon customer. I bought a galaxy S8 as part of a trade-in deal but Best Buy never honored the trade-in promotion. I went back and forth with both Best Buy and Verizon. Ultimately, Verizon said to work it out with Best Buy since it was Best Buy’s promotion then Best Buy tells me they did the promotion with a third party. I tried so many times I just gave up. Not to mention their support team would never give me updates unless I came to them first. Poor communication with both their customers and their alleged third party. Won’t buy a phone from them again, i’ll just deal with Verizon directly.
