I just received my tuners and installed them. They’re beautiful and work wonderfully! I’d highly recommend them.
I have had a very good experience. I bought them in 2016 and they are still intact. The tuning of my guitar is firm. I have traveled for a month several times and when I return the tuning has not moved. The best!!!
Are you still in business? I’m a return customer and your phone number no longer works a d you have not responded to my email ?! Please respond

I went to see some portable pianos, and even though their shop is small, their collection is far better than most big shops. Especially if you are learner/amateur and looking for a serious mid-range instrument, you should come to this place. The people are very friendly and show you various instruments in detail.
Rob
Was excellent. Didn’t rush us,showed us around, and was very helpful.
Good choice of instruments, not a lot of parking. The staff is not very nice at all.
I tried going in a few weeks ago, absolutely insane they still require a mask to go in, they had the entrance blocked off with a table and a sign.
Kudos to the independent music store that has endured the test of time… probably due to their friendly, no pressure staff. Would have liked to see more guitars and basses not mass manufactured by Fender and Gibson and Rickenbacker. Gelb has some vintage and few boutique guitars by Anderson and Suhr… didn’t see any Zon or other California bass makers… which IMO they could use more, but being around for so long means they are doing something right.
Tried to shop here but the entrance was barricaded with a table, alcohol gel, and a sign saying that masks were required to enter.
It’s late August 2022 and covid is as much past history as it likely ever will be. Get a grip or go out of business. Turning potential customers away at this point is crazy.
I just experience the worst service, something that was going so good, ended up leaving the me (customer) unpleasant and dissatisfied. Im in need of a power supply for a unit which i purchased from Gelb music store about 6 years back. In fact it would’ve been my third time getting an adapter here. I saw online that they have it stock, i drove from Napa to redwood city due to familiarity. Multiple staff tried to help find an adapter that works. One older staff insist to take over. He found one unboxed among spared ones without a price tag. The older staff therefore told another staff to charge me(customer) $25 for that old charger.. (let it be known, newer charger/ adapters are between $10 and $20)
How do you come up with that figure?
Oh the black man has to pay more huh?
Omdb they’ll never have my business again.
The older staff viciously took back the adapter and said i was assisting his time. Thought you were working?..
As someone who has been going to Gelb since I was a teenager all I have to say is “Please make it go away”.
What was once a well known piece of the music community of the bay area has become totally useless.
What was once a family of musicians active in the local music scene is now the Kmart of music stores, disorganized…impersonal…just another guitar store.
A couple of weeks ago I went there to get a couple of packs of strings and they couldn’t find them???
Today I went in to see if they had a couple of guitar boxes to ship a guitar I was selling, in the past the response was sure how many do you need, today the response was “We sell them for $15”, if they had said 5$ sure but $15? what exactly am I paying for? your stellar customer service?
Since the change this place has steadily gone downhill, please just let it go, make it go away, or at least change the name so you aren’t tarnishing the name of what was once an institution of the bay area music scene.
4. Zon Guitars
Address: 780 Second Ave, Redwood City, CA 94063 , North Fair Oaks , California , United States
I bought a bass about 2 weeks ago. They were very helpful, allowed me all the time I needed to play around and make a decision, then carefully removed stickers and cleaned it up nicely before handing it over. I’ll go back here when I’m ready to buy a new amp.
Great selection. This was our first time here, my son was in heaven. The guys there were really helpful. Too bad we don’t live closer.
Musical instruments and sheet music.
Don’t be fooled by the name: this is a guitar center more than anything.
I was looking for this other used DVD store in the Haight, but I guess they closed their doors so we ended up here just walking by. They have tons of DVD’s, though some of the pricing was odd. They had better deals with box series. They have both new and used so you have to pay attention to what you’re getting. I like the way they organized the movies in categories and also had a series and BBC section.
Yes, Gelb Music is now also Haight Ashbury Music Center. A long standing fixture of the community, like Manor Music in Pacifica this is one of the few remaining original music shops.
Disappointing – got yelled at by someone for carrying a bag, then walked out as they don’t sell anything besides guitars.
I bought a Rick high gain bass pickup from the shop over 18 months ago. I live in Australia so the staff had to go to a bit of trouble to arrange the shipping (via ebay) and I thank them for that. When I eventually decided to put the pickup in, I found the screws didn’t fit. After taking it to a reputable guitar repairer, he found that the threads hadn”t been cut into the pickup housing so there’s no way I could fit it to my bass. I’ve emailed them about five times without any response…
Horrible service, over priced equipment and when i went in for electrical help with my guitar they were so disrespectful to me that i had to leave.

We believe CCM have been critical to our children’s growth in the last 8 years . What they learned here is way beyond just the music trainings. It’s a fun and inspiring place where they develop their deep passion towards music and learn to be disciplined and persistent in achieving excellence. I found that CCM has always focused on building a positive, fun and encouraging culture, which I believe has been a key reasons that children can stay in music for long. I will not hesitate to recommend CCM to any family for their child’s or even grownups’ music education
Ccm is good wonderful place to learn music and our teacher Chris is amazing
The instruction has been a very good balance between pushing my daughter to work hard and make progress vs. making music fun and understanding the personality of the child and not expecting too much of her (a 7 year old).

Address: 1105 Marcussen Dr, Menlo Park, CA 94025 , North Fair Oaks , California , United States
Alita is fabulous! Our son has grown and learned a ton under her guidance. He looks forward to every lesson and is proud of his progress. Alita is a truly gifted, enthusiastic, and inspiring teacher!
I took piano lessons from a few other teachers, but they simply didn’t make learning interesting and made piano feel like a chore. Alita made piano feel fun and rewarding from the very first day. She goes out of her way to make learning interesting for the student, which keeps them engaged and happy to learn. She is experienced with teaching both adults and children, as well as beginner and advanced skill levels. I stayed with her for several years, progressing from a beginner to an advanced player, and classes stayed fun and engaging the entire time. I feel it speaks to her skill as a teacher that she managed to turn me from someone who was disinterested in piano to someone who is interested in it.
Our two young children take piano lessons with Alita and enjoy her teaching. We appreciate that she caters to each child’s personality and interest. We definitely recommend the studio for young piano learners!
12. The Record Man
Address: 1322 El Camino Real, Redwood City, CA 94063 , North Fair Oaks , California , United States
Best place ever to find music treasures. I found a KISS album that was difficult to find and it was a reasonable price. If you are an I Love Lucy fan, they’ve got DVDs of all of the old classics. Lol.
Truly a national treasure. The vibe of the place alone is worth the visit. Cannot recommend the Record Man enough if you love classic Vinyl or even old school games and movie in their Planet Mix!
Classic vinyl in a vintage setting but with customer parking at the gravel lot immediately adjacent to the records shop. Tens of thousands of classic vinyl records and some memorabilia and instruments. Expect pennies on the dollar for any records you sell to the store, unless classic rock albums in excellent condition. Most your records will likely be donations, but better than sending to the landfill. A smaller CD, DVD and Video Game shop is behind the record shop. Expect to be accompanied by the friendly house dogs while you browse.
Friendly service. However all used vinyl is very overpriced. I spent over an hour picking out used 80’s records. They would be rated G for sleeve and maybe G+ to VG in vinyl quality. They are very dusty and not cleaned. They wanted 24.99 each for records that maybe would fetch 12 on discogs. I bought two new records for that price ea and passed on all the used vinyl. I’ll never go back.
Outrageous prices, no deals to be had.
Peculiar customer service with certain staff.
13. Peninsula Music – Palo Alto Instrument Rentals, Repairs, Lessons
Address: 4333 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, CA 94306 , North Fair Oaks , California , United States
As far as know, this is the only store which sells professional grade brass intruments in the silicon valley. I tried several cornets and bought a Getzen Eterna here. I have been quite satisfied with both the intruments and thestore.
Steve Boughman went out of his way to degrade and mistreat me. The man was incredibly rude and condescending when he tried to sell me a saxophone in poor condition. Worst experience I have ever had in a music store. Disappointed and ashamed as a local musician that these are the types of repair people we have to deal with. Take your business ANYWHERE else.
This place is good if you have a high end musical instrument. I went in to repair my sons trumpet and they basically told me that they wouldn’t service it because it wasn’t a high end thousand dollar instrument. Too bad, I was actually looking to buy him a new intermediate trumpet for his birthday here in the next few months but they will not be getting my business.
14. X.M.E.S Rehearsals
Address: 3549 Haven Ave, Menlo Park, CA 94025 , North Fair Oaks , California , United States
Great place to rehearse music. Sean who takes care of this place is awesome. He is a bass guitarist and a singer, so gets what you need.
Shawn is the man. The jam spaces are really nice and there is plenty of equipment you can rent if you’re short on something. Drums and mixers are abundant, not too sure about guitars.
The facilities are all in good shape, clean, and Shawn even has a fridge with some bottled water.
Buen lugar para ensayos, aunq a veces la batería no es muy buena.
Nice set up super friendly staff always there to help you out. Will try their best to help out with scheduling.
I just wish the place had AC, it gets hot after a while
15. West Valley Music
Address: 300 W El Camino Real, Mountain View, CA 94040 , North Fair Oaks , California , United States
I stopped in to buy new strings for my electric guitar and was surprised to find a good selection of accessories in addition to the brass and woodwind instruments they have on hand. They have a few guitars covering a decent price range, but they are definitely not what I would consider a guitar shop. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful, and I know that I’ll be going back for any other music related purchases in the future.
Took my flute collection in for a possible tune up. Was told that all but one of the flutes were unplayable. Guess my looks or money weren’t what they accepted there. Took my ‘non playable’ flutes, and commenced to use them to busk, there in downtown Mtn View. Odd that they were declared unplayable, yet I was playing at least one of them not 30 minutes later. Care to explain West Valley Music staff ?
16. Sono Strings
Address: 171 E El Camino Real, Mountain View, CA 94040 , North Fair Oaks , California , United States
Jason is incredible! We were in a bind–we had a lender violin from our school that someone had glued the bridge to, and were looking at spending $1K minimum to replace the violin. Jason was able to fix the problem for us for substantially less! We are so grateful, and look forward to continuing to use Sono Strings for our future violin and cello needs 🙂
When one of my sons cello strings broke along with the bridge falling off, happened to find this place on here. Let me tell you, not only are they very knowledgeable of these delicate yet beautiful instruments but they are the upmost humble people as well. Jason was not only able to straighten the bridge but was able to tune all the strings after adding the broken one.
There’s people who know about fixing instruments but there are also those who care and go far and beyond on showing how to care for the instrument. My son was happy and along the way learned how to hold the cello in its bag as well.
Thank you again for the your wonderful help this morning. Can’t wait to hear him practice more now.
They can rehair cello bow. They are very friendly and gentle. Especially Abraham gave me some great advices about cello strings. Thank you very much. I will come again when I have some troubles with my cello.
Bad quality violin!!!! We rented a 1/8 violin but wanted to cancel our 3-month contract the same day we rented due to violin quality issue (black paint all over my child’s fingers with strong chemical smells on the surface of the strings and the string board, never happened on her own violins we bought before).
But the Asian female staff there refused, we ended up paying over $90 without playing for a single day!! She was also angry that we have rented another violin from elsewhere without going to them first. But we are very disappointed with the quality and do not want to bother exchanging for another one. And she kept asking for my current address and also read aloud my address from my driver’s license as if to threaten me. Horrible experience!!
The female staff also refuse to give me information of the owner and insisted that she contact the owner directly and would not give me a call if the owner refused to give me back my deposit.
We returned our violin after three months but they refused to give the deposit back to us 🙁
17. Planet Mix
Address: 1322 A, 1322 El Camino Real, Redwood City, CA 94063 , North Fair Oaks , California , United States
Great selection of classic games/music choices as well a plethora of physical DVD sets. Always a steller place to go visit, always bring home something with each visit.
Used video games, lots of music, pleasant staff. It’s a bit hard to find, it’s behind the record store.
Basically your one-stop-old-game-shop!
Great store for current and retro needs! There’s some great finds here at some great prices! The staff for the most part is nice and welcome even though they don’t do cash instead of in-store credit anymore. But nevertheless if you have some DVD’s or old games that need a great home this is the place to do it!
Read some reviews and from the looks of it they make fake accounts and put up these 5 star reviews but I can assure you it is not.
Tried calling during business hours yesterday and today so many times but no answer. Went to the store anyway and it had 3 open signs but there was clearly nobody there. I wouldn’t be surprised if this store shuts down soon. I just don’t sense any care from the business owners behalf.
not open to the public, despite what you may see or read
Just came here drove out of my way and the place is closed at 11am during business hours…. what a joke. Definitely don’t waste your time.
We bought an upright bass here and couldn’t have been more pleased. The selection is amazing, and Steve was helpful and patient.
The store does still exist but it’s a bit difficult to find.
If you’re into playing bass, this is where you want to shop. Steve is extremely accommodating, and I spent two and a half hours there trying different basses with different bows. Steve’s approach is solid. He provides information, and then leaves you alone so that you can hear the bass that you’re playing… Finding and purchasing the right bass or bow can be a time-consuming experience. Steve’s approach makes it much easier, and I will definitely shop there again!
Has a large selection of fine guitars and bass
I put my guitar on consignment with Steve about 2 years ago. He lent it out for long spans of time without my permission and eventually sold it without informing me. Then he said he needed the money for his own bills, so he couldn’t pay me. He’s obviously got problems that should keep anyone from trusting him. I’m taking him to small claims court over it.
20. Mete Tasin Music Academy
Address: 420 Nimitz Ave, Redwood City, CA 94061 , North Fair Oaks , California , United States
Mete is a real opera singer, classically trained in Europe, who has sung lead tenor roles in major international opera houses. He is also a genuinely nice, caring person. He is very patient and clear in his explanations of the most complicated elements of singing. In the last two years he has transformed my voice and given me a range and quality of tone I never imagined I could achieve. If you are interested in singing classical, popular or Broadway styles I can’t recommend him more highly. He is also quite proficient on the piano and has many piano students. Although many of his students are children he has many adult students including me (over 70 years old).
When it comes to teaching voice, Mete is one in a million. I’ve had countless voice teachers over the years, and after working with Mete for just a few months, I’ve overcome hurdles that I once thought were insurmountable. He’s also incredibly patient, observant, kind, honest, and insightful. If you’re ready to truly let your voice blossom, work with Mete!
