Pretty good inventory from starter instruments to grand pianos. Laid back atmosphere.
Very limited selection of music, they have lots of guitars and pianos, though.
Going to get my guitar that i bought used there to get it fixed i assumed they would have fixed any imperfections before they put it on a shelf for purchase
Ignored from the time I walked into the store until I left.Walked a circle throughout looking for help only to find employees chatting it up. Both looked up at me and quickly turned away and continued talking to each other. Will never get my business.
I’ve been to a lot of music stores, and let me tell ya, avoid the this at all costs. Prices are High, equipment is below average, and the customer service is a joke. If you don’t mind paying top prices for sub standard gear and having to staff look down at you like you owe them something well this is the place for you . Two thumbs down
Took in a brand new bass to get a pickup replaced. Not a scratch on it, never played once. The supposedly simple pickup replacement took a week and a half only for them to give me back my new bass with the back of it covered in scratches and a huge glob of dried glue stuck to the fretboard that won’t come off. They absolutely wrecked my new bass before I even had a chance to play it. Worst possible experience. I am sick to my stomach about how poorly they treated my equipment and would recommend avoiding this place at all costs.
3. Orion High School
Address: 1100 13th St, Orion, IL 61273 , Orion , Illinois , United States
Great music store and excellent guitar tech. Brought in my 60’s ES300 for some work and when i got it back it played better than the day it left Gibson. A customer for ages and for a good reason.
Very cool little place. Had a guitar set up by them. Service was fast, fair and clean. Awesome people work there make you feel very welcome. Love the room full of wornstar products. Strongly recommend this place for your music needs.
Nice small music shop, very organized. They have some instruments (mostly guitars). They also offer music lessons, my daughter just started piano lessons with James Lyons and he was great. I was skeptical that she would like piano lessons but he made it very enjoyable and fun for her. We can’t wait to see her skills grow.
Music store with a nice selection of instruments. Some vinyl and CDs too, although it has very few, if any, hidden treasures. 2 stars removed because the one employee and 2 of the customers were not wearing masks when I visited. I would have spent more time and money here if they were. Stay safe, everyone.
Friendly people
I was very dissatisfied with this location as they don’t offer any instruments that would allow the user to produce the sounds of Echolocation
5. PM Music Center
Address: 4411 Fox Valley Center Dr, Aurora, IL 60504 , Orion , Illinois , United States
I love going to this store. Everything is easy to find and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend!
Great customer service, very patient and informative.
The repairmen are very honest, smart and helpful!
Good
Very friendly and welcoming place. Had an issue with a repair but they corrected the problem. Took more than stop to resolve the issue, so 4 out 5 stars. Would still recommend and will continue to shop here.
Great place with very friendly staff members. They’re always willing to help. I used them for instrument rental for a couple of my kids.
6. DeMont Guitars
Address: 61a Stone Hill Rd, Oswego, IL 60543 , Orion , Illinois , United States
People there were really nice and overall a great place to go to if you need help
This is a great shop. Friendly, hardworking staff and very reasonable pricing. Josh did a fantastic job replacing the tuners on my Gibson LP and making the right adjustments to my Hummingbird. Highly recommend for all your guitar service needs.
If I could give this guy ten stars, I would. Amazingly knowledgeable people, and very very friendly and open to sharing this knowledge. Lots and lots of options for help, whether it is guitar parts, guitar repairs, or wood furniture creation or repair. We are lucky to have such a comprehensive business coupled with patient and adept and masterful craftsmen. I am including no photos because I was so immersed in the experience. Must go at least once 🙂
I was there the morning right after it caught on fire, hard to review this place since it was being cleaned up. Just to be fair i gave it 4 stars
Only gave a star review because I was busy at the time. Now that I have time, *clears throat*…
Nice little store tucked away in a place nobody would ever think a guitar shop would be. It is full of vintage and newly made (Guyatone) guitars, basses and amps. They have so many guitars for sale! If you can afford vintage prices, do shop here! (They also have a Reverb page, iirc)
Very unprofessional. Nate seems to act like a know it all, but could use a few lessons.
Made my first purchase, but unfortunately it turned out the item had been listed with an incorrect price. Was disappointed, but I was notified and the refund was issued quickly at least.
Update: Had a representative reach out a week later attempting to buy off my review with an undisclosed discount. When I explained that I could not in good morals accept that as the review was fair and the time to do the right thing had come and pass they explained that they could not afford to honor the mistake ($50 difference), all the while offering a discount which could well add up to the same amount, or more at the end of the day making the explanation somewhat nonsensical in that case. It’s an unfortunate circumstance to be sure as the mistakes keep snowballing and I very much enjoyed everything I had read and seen from them prior to this.
7. Quinlan & Fabish Music Company
Address: 291 Montgomery Rd, Montgomery, IL 60538 , Orion , Illinois , United States
Awesome store great staff terrific selection of instruments.
The staff here are amazing and the store is wonderful and has a wide selection of quality products. The employees here have consistently been extremely helpful for me!
Went to my daughter’s school for “band info” night. Even with Covid, they had the kids trying out wind instruments (I REALLY hope they cleaned them properly between kids). She liked the flute and I was presented with an “agreement” for 4 month trial of $72 (reasonable) and then $40/mo for 2.5 YEARS. The guy (who never even introduced himself) tried to put an “agreement” in front of me; told me it wasn’t a purchase contract (really, then what would it be with a total price of over $1,000 on it? That price and my signature makes it a …contract…).
I hit the brakes; no way am I paying a thousand dollars for anything my kid needs to keep safe, clean and protected… He actually got an attitude, huffing and ripping up the paper. This is thru the school so shame on them too but I walked in for a 10yo to try an instrument so she could join band with her friends and found myself with a washed-up-car-salesman-trying-to-sell-me-a-timeshare feeling. Oh, and lets not forget the “book”, “music stand” and “cleaning cloth” that were…you guessed it…EXTRA $!
I LMAO all the way to the car.
Very disappointed in the customer service. I received incorrect information from Quinlan & Fabish at Crone Middle School and they won’t honor what was told to me. Very over priced. Do yourself a favor and shop around.
Edit: They ended up honoring the verbal price I was quoted.
8. Austin’s Violin Shop
Address: 316 Wheeler Rd, Sugar Grove, IL 60554 , Orion , Illinois , United States
I went to String Works yesterday out of necessity and the clerk was very helpful and did his best to find a replacement guitar stand my band needed asap, although what String Works had didn’t fit our needs, I would shop there again, hopefully not under duress like yesterday! The Jade 50s Band.
Excellent costumer service!! I bought a cello a weeks ago and it came carefuly packed, with some extra details for a perfect delivery. The cello was already set up to play. I love it! It’s a wonderful instrument! Thanks to StringWorks for the help and professionalism.
Evan was super helpful and very knowledgeable. I went in for a viola bow and case and ended up getting my viola inspected by one of their luthiers as well. Everyone was polite and happy to help me. What a great place!
Nope! I am going to let the pictures speak for themselves. This was supposed to have been worked on by the head luthier, took 3 weeks to arrive, AND cost $1,500! looks like a junior high project that would have gotten a poor grade. I could not ship it back to them fast enough! Utter trash.
So very disappointed. I guess they are lucky that I am not reporting them to the BBB.
10. Luscombe Music Inc
Address: 122 W Vallette St, Elmhurst, IL 60126 , Orion , Illinois , United States
My boys love doing Music Together here. Miss Michelle is a great teacher
We are 30 year residents of Elmhurst and Luscombes has been our go to music store for good reason. Recently my wife and I, now empty nesters, decided to take up piano lessons and it has been wonderful. Elizabeth Olson is a patient, passionate teacher who makes the lessons interesting and stimulates us to learn and practice. We will never be performance artistes but are playing pieces we did not think possible just a few months ago. Most of all it is fun and very enjoyable!
Yearly music by the pound sale is AMAZING
The teachers are great but the instruments and rentals are not so great, since the recent downsize, you can’t find some things there.
Extremely unprofessional. We got on the wait list, waited 2 months and got a call saying they had a spot for our day and time. We returned the call the next day saying we wanted to start as soon as possible. Office called us back saying the the instructor, Elizabeth Olson, should be calling us to make the final arrangements. She called the Sunday of MLK weekend, we were with family the next two days. We connected Tuesday and she wanted to do an assessment on the day we agreed on but a time that didn’t work and wasn’t agreed upon. She said she understood and arranged the following week on the original agreed upon time and day. We accepted, then she messages us and said she found another client that would use the extra day and bumped us out. When we questioned her motive, she said this is just business.
way over priced
11. Miller Music Inc
Address: 4510 N Illinois St #3, Swansea, IL 62226 , Orion , Illinois , United States
Great service! Got just what i needed for my ukulele and got to play the pianos! Gentleman gave me a great recommendation for a piano tuner too!
Muy amable el señor que me atendió
I was desperate to fix my leaking Tenor Sax before band practice. Steve had me come in and checked it out on the spot. He made several quick adjustments and made it playable for me. No charge. Wow!!! Awesome customer service Steve! Thank you very much!
They appear to no longer be in business.
Do not put an item on consignment with this business. You will never hear from them again. Disgraceful business tactics + no communication regarding the issue. I will do everything possible to discredit this business.
I took my niece to Miller Music to see about having an issue fixed with her flute. The guy working looked at it for a few seconds and said he didn’t notice any issues (leaks) visible to the eye. I then asked if it would be okay for her to play the instrument for him so that he could listen, and hopefully make a diagnosis that way. He responded with, “Yeah, hurry up.” Needless to say, the instrument is still having an issue. When we purchased the couple of instruments we have, he was polite. Now that there’s an issue, “Mr. Nice Guy” left the building. I’d never recommend anyone to buy anything else from them again.
The owners were rude and condescending. I got the impression that not EVERYONE was welcome in their store. They may have a large selection of music, but I’ll take my money and my dignity to other music stores.
12. North Shore Music
Address: 405 1/2 Linden Ave, Wilmette, IL 60091 , Orion , Illinois , United States
My 13 year-old son has been taking drum lessons at North Shore Music for 2 years. He’s also in the studio’s band camp which places him with other students to form a rock band. They perform in public around Wilmette. He absolutely loves it and so do we parents. Alejandro and his staff are terrific!
This is an awesome place to improve your skills in music. The owner really knows his stuff and the staff is always helpful when it comes to rescheduling lessons. Can’t recommend enough.
Highly recommend! Alejandro went out of his way to accommodate us and it is much appreciated. So nice to deal with a music shop that is not corporate, wonderful to have someone who is proud of his craft and supportive of the community as well as their love of music!!!
13. Cordogan’s Pianoland
Address: 33W441 Roosevelt Rd, Geneva, IL 60134 , Orion , Illinois , United States
Very knowledgeable, helpful, and professional staff. Their movers were also great.
The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable! We were in and out and got a great deal on a quality digital piano! Thanks again!
My 11-year-old daughter had been bugging me to get something she could take lessons with as my grandmothers old Conn organ is very difficult to learn on. Went in on a Saturday and was helped by Rick. Now he could have tried to sell me something that I didn’t need but he didn’t. Gave me his opinions based on what I was looking for and was very honest. In this day and age, it is very refreshing to find honest people to deal with. The Roland RP701 to start with has been perfect for her to start on and for the money is a bargain as far as sound and feel. My 6-year-old son is taking a liking to playing too so in a few years I will be back to Cordigan’s to add to the collection. Highly recommend them for honesty, selection, and experience.
Cordogan’s Pianoland has a nice selection of grand pianos, uprights, and digital pianos. The staff is friendly, and the selection ranges from Estonia to Kawaii to Yamaha and some other brands.
Very friendly staff, great brands of Grand and upright pianos.
The sales people were overly aggressive and the prices were outrageously high. Not worth the drive from Winnetka.
14. Tobias Music
Address: 5013 Fairview Ave, Downers Grove, IL 60515 , Orion , Illinois , United States
First class service!!!
I received my guitar in California in just a couple of days in perfect condition.
The knowledge and consideration from Paul T. is proof of his capable hands.
Thanks so much.
Tobias Music is the best Taylor dealer I have visited in the area. Their inventory is outstanding and their customer service is the best. I highly recommend Tobias for anyone that is looking for a great instrument, or a custom built guitar, Tobias Music will not disappoint.
One of the best businesses I have every done business with. They are talented, honest and all around great people. I’ve kept going back to them over the years and will do so in the future. I hope the best for Tobias Music. Excellent!
They are more of a acoustic guitar place not really a place for bass players .
***EDIT***
So, I am knocking down my review from five stars to three; due to my most recent experience a couple months after the first one. So I reached backout to buy another guitar (place order) as I really wanted an AD22e or another model I can’t remember, but after confirming they could place the order I let them know that I wanted the AD22e and to provide me the full price so we could close the deal and they went silent, mind you I didn’t even get a copy of the receipt from my AD27e that never came which I had also requested from the last conversation.
I did finally get my guitar ordered but I had a national retailer place the order. I was disappointed I didn’t hear back from Tobias Music about completing the purchase and obtaining a copy of the receipt for my AD27e that never came.
** original **
Just bought an AD27e (Taylor) from them after finding it for sale online. it was a great buying experience. I’m a lefty, buying guitars online is the norm, and most of the time guitars I buy take a day or two to pack and ship. we had a few emails back and forth and they were quick to respond and very professional. These guys had it packed and shipped the same day, and I didn’t place my order until after lunch; that’s service.
They also took the time to dial the guitar in; it came with the action set and was tuned ready to play out of the box. Paul did a great job and really made this buying experience easy, and hassle free. I’ll have to check back often to see what other lefty guitar they get in. If I have the chance, I will buy from them again.

16. American Music World
Address: 605 N York St, Elmhurst, IL 60126 , Orion , Illinois , United States
Fantastic guys to work with..moved the piano beautifully..responsive, fun..great company !
Just bought a beautiful Yamaha from Joe, he was great an so helpful. I was surprised to find out they do just about everything that has to do with pianos From sales to moving it to storage to tuning to restoration to lessons. I also love that everyone I worked with there or will work with is an owner or at least part of the family. The one downfall was that they were only open by appointment due to Covid but when I called to set an appointment they were very open with their time and was very simple. Thanks American music world I can’t wait to get this piano into my house
Bought a piano based on pics and was very satisfied! Beautiful piano for our boys to learn on! In great shape and an awesome value for price paid! Glad I went with this family owned business! Give then a try if in the market for a piano!
GREAT selection of Yamaha , electric and mahogany pianos and , Miss Morgan spoke to…
They moved my piano. Got the job done but I am not totally happy about the move. They are not professional enough. They don’t have anything to cover the hard wood floor and carpet like the professional movers. In addition, the guy Rick talks too much. Will not recommend their moving piano service to my friends.
Horrible experience trying to sell them our grand piano. Rick was to come get the piano. He cancelled 5 times. Each excuse was more pathetic than the last. The final excuse was such a lie.
17. Mike’s Music
Address: 816 E Main St A, Carbondale, IL 62901 , Orion , Illinois , United States
The staff is always very kind and helpful. My number 1 stop for anything music related!
It was awesome , great service !
Excellent customer service, Knowledgeable associate in answering my questions. Reasonably priced merchandise.
Best place ever to me
Really nice people, just very overpriced
Very friendly and helpful. Nice to still have a brick and mortar music store in the area.
They sold me a violin for 2,000 and when I had it appraised the specialist said they cost $100 for a set of three. I will never do business with them again and I urge anyone to go elsewhere
19. White House of Music
Address: 1724 S Church St, Watertown, WI 53094 , Orion , Illinois , United States
Pretty decent selection of guitars, not a huge store but has your basic guitar essentials, friendly staff as well
They are really nice and helpful. I’m also going there again for my instrument. 10/10
Super connection of package and Service.
They’ve become my go-to for strings, capo/etc, and after 2 or 10 visits to pick and admire it, I picked up their Fender Acoustic with a locking case for descent. Comfy little shop decorated with music 😉
Dropped my violin off to be repaired. I was told it would be ready in 11 days, and they would call me. They did not call me. I called them to ask. The store is very clean and well organized. The people there can be friendly and helpful for the most part. It’s a little pricey, but it is the closest, and as far as I know, the only instrument store around.
Kinda expensive
Quick and helpful service. Had exactly what I need on hand.
Could not find the place on GPS… nobody answered the phone..drove 20 min for nothing. Will never spend another dime there..bad customer service
Terrible the way renting instruments works…would not recommend…waste of money…just buy your own intrument from somewhere else.
20. The Practice Pad
Address: 116 N Illinois Ave, Carbondale, IL 62901 , Orion , Illinois , United States
Been taking guitar instruction here for over two years. Chad and Mike are great, and I recommend The Practice Pad for anyone seeking musical instruction.
My 2 year old daughter has been showing signs of interest in the drums. Being new to the Southern IL area I did my own research for classes & a teacher my child was comfortable with. The Practice Pad is a place that my child never wants to leave when our sessions are over for the day. I couldn’t ask for better!
the best place to buy from someone someone who has a brain…….
