Great store, always have what I need from instruments to guitar strings.
I have been to a lot of music stores and most of the time you feel the staff is just there for work but this staff really seems to enjoy what they are doing and they do awesome tech work. 100% recommend to all musicians
Kind of middle of the road on these guys. They are great at customer service but have a limited selection, especially for bass guitars and not a lot to offer in the way of begginer instruments. Though they often have really nice wuality merchandise, they aren’t the best option if you are looking for a “deal.” Though please consider i only visit them 3 or 4 times a year and they do usually assure me they usually have more in the way of merchandise options. It’s not been my experience on my occasional visits.
Went in today looking at guitars. Great prices, great selection, friendly service. They had a brand I was interested in was and was looking for. I like the fact that they offer lessons. I will be back
Awesome
These Guys has absolutely no clue about what they’re selling/doing.
Better drive 100 miles more instead dealing with these non professional “sellers??????”
Keep you money don’t buy here
Purchased a guitar and amp with all of the accessories for a new player. Upon picking up the guitar, the amp I picked out was sold, and another amp was put on the table with no explanation of where the other amp was. The amp was a decent brand, so I didn’t say anything, and the amp was also new. After using the amp, I had significant issues that I had to troubleshoot. Nothing worked. I returned them amp and explained what I had done to troubleshoot, and they did not want to look at it. I asked for the original amp I picked out, and the staff became angry and aggressive. I attempted to calm things down and solve the issue, but then they gave me the amp that I had originally played and asked me to leave. I will never return.
2. Alaska Music & Sound
Address: 1000 Ingra St, Anchorage, AK 99501 , Y , Alaska , United States
I had two mark VI saxes overhauled by them and got my Miyazawa flute serviced there. The service was excellent and my horns play great!
Very nice friendly people and a lot of great instruments
Staff have always been friendly to me and are very knowledgeable of the products they keep in stock. I love that they carry Godin and Seagull guitars because they are not as well known as they should be. Their product selection isn’t as broad as Mammoth but is focused on quality over quantity and I am sure they can get something ordered for you if they don’t have it in stock.
Sells well made oboe reeds. Would definitely recommend buying oboe reeds here
Really friendly and helpful staff
Good service.
3. Wood and Wire Guitars and Music
Address: 3020 Glenn Hwy, Palmer, AK 99645 , Y , Alaska , United States
The best guitar shop in alaska, hands down. The owner is the coolest most friendly dude around. Always happy to answer any and all questions and help out with anything having to do with guitars and equipment. He is very professional and has an extensive knowledge on instruments and equipment. The only guitar shop I go to.
I’m so grateful that Palmer has a music shop and glad I can buy local! Like others reviewers have said, there is just a great vibe at Wood And Wire when you enter the store. This is truly a great, quality music store, and the owner Todd is just such a very genuine person who is passionate about music. I purchased and traded in instruments here and always feel great about the transaction. In addition, there are music lessons offered here from wonderful instructors. If you have been on the fence about picking up that instrument you always wanted to, then definitely swing on by Wood and Wire.
Great place,,,good helpful staff
With excellent equipment.
Two thumbs up
Nice assortment of guitars and stuff and Todd is awesome go in and check it out
Nice little music shop. Friendly owners and a pretty cool selection of guitars.
4. Mammoth Music
Address: 500 E 5th Ave, Anchorage, AK 99501 , Y , Alaska , United States
Great staff. Great place. So many different instruments to pick from
Mammoth Music is the go to place for working musicians in Anchorage. The personnel are real people with real musical experience particularly concerning the instruments and equipment modern musicians use. They have been able to merry my needs every time even when they are very nuanced. Great place. Great people. And the drums are upstairs.
Great customer service. The guys here are were knowledgeable both times I stopped by and even though I don’t know much about microphones they were very kind and patient. I appreciate their professionalism and treating me with respect. They also have a great selection of instruments and seemed willing to help me get in stock what ever I needed.
One of the best local music stores
The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful.
Very helpful employees in this store not only were they helpful but patient and kind. A lot of musical stuff.
I’ve been a customer for years and was sold a broken used guitar that the salesman later told me that they knew was broken. Forget these guys, at least Guitar Center won’t scam you.
I went in looking for a guitar and asked a guy if I could check out the guitars in the humidity controlled room. His response was “You don’t want to go in there, there isn’t a guitar for less than a grand in there.”
I bought a $1000 acoustic that came with a free adjustment, cleaning and strings. I took the guitar in a year later and had to pay for strings. They said it’d be done early next week on Friday. I went in 2 weeks later and they hadn’t touched it. They said it could be up to a month to honor the free cleaning they promised. I just left with my strings and cleaned it myself.
I turned in my guitar for been calibrated a month ago and they didn’t work on it. I never received a call from them. I asked for my refund.
5. The Music Man
Address: 4623 Old Seward Hwy, Anchorage, AK 99503 , Y , Alaska , United States
Staff is very friendly and has tons of knowledge. Prices are amazing and my family buys our instruments from here and theyre built to last. Has everything you need, and tge staff will size the instrument for you.
Very friendly service. Loving my ukulele. I needed the use of an instrument for a practice and they came through for me just when I needed. Absolute angels. 🙂
Staff is knowledgable and very helpful. We’ve appreciated all their advice as we venture through our kids music lessons.
This is a great place to find anything musical. They have anything from saxophones to guitars and they have a great program for elementary students who are just getting into music. Their rent to own policy is really nice and I would definitely recommend it. Also, they sponsor lots of musical activities, like private lessons and music groups. Definitely worth checking out if you are in need of anything musical.
Great customer service, & selections.
Wow. They have everything you need.
Too expensive
Poor service, DO NOT BRING ANYTHING HERE. Your item will break at the first use and they will act like it’s your fault and not a faulty repair job. Rip off.
Limited selection. Business seemingly on its last legs.
6. Guitar Center
Address: 2880 Seward Hwy, Anchorage, AK 99503 , Y , Alaska , United States
I stopped in for the first time the other day and was shocked at the size of the store and the incredible inventory. The staff were all picking away at some instrument or another and they were extremely helpful … which was good as I know nothing about anything related to audio equipment and I left feeling like I had just received a private tutorial. Speaking of which, I was surprised to see their instruction center, with several local, accomplished musicians available to teach all levels of students. They also had a repair center available, which was good to learn. For those who podcast or webcast, they have a great assortment of tech products to make your life easier or to help you up your game. If you are just starting, it looked like they had instrument rental available too. There are several small music shops that I love in town, and I always say buy and shop local. With that said, the inventory here, especially where percussion items, guitars, keyboards and microphones were concerned, was incredible. No need to order online.
They are always so helpful at the store either in person or over the phone they take the time to answer all of your questions
Great customer service, got my wife a guitar with a customer representative help for Christmas
Ehh. Come here for gaff tape. That’s about it.
Great prices found the guitar i wanted was in and out in few minutes the guys are friendly
Everything in that store is solid klean and Orginized
I was told, over the phone, they buy guitar amps. I spent 20 min cleaning my amp, 20 min driving across town, and 20 min waiting, for an incompetent employee to check someone out, only to be told that in fact, they are not buying guitar amps. Must not need a high school diploma to work there.
THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE – terrible
Awful experience with private lessons. My children enjoyed their teachers but we had multiple issues with them canceling our lessons and moving them around without notifying us. There are better places to get private lessons.
7. Petr’s Violin Shop & Guitar Central
Address: 1408 Hyder St Unit B, Anchorage, AK 99501 , Y , Alaska , United States
Love the service! Bought my guitar and violin here~
I moved from hot and humid Tennessee to cold and dry Alaska which caused lots of buzzing about my acoustic guitar along with some other strange side effects. I took it here to get fixed, and the technician adjusted the neck tension, replaced my saddle, serviced my nut (my high E was getting wedged too far in it), and it sounds amazing again and is back to its old self. All that for a great price as well. 10/10 recommend.
Staff is always friendly and attentive!
At least its not a viola
Great service, my family has purchased several acoustic guitars and a stratocaster from Petr’s shop. I still regularly use the acoustic that was purchased about 5-6 years ago, no quality problems. Had a problem with one and he provided great service in getting it fixed. Great prices and support.
They know a lot about instruments here and the store seems nicely stocked with the essentials.
Went to this shop while visiting family in Anchorage…I’m from Ohio where there is plenty music shops….This is the only store I have ever visited where they didn’t want you to try one of there electrics without assistance…and they were Mexican guitars not even USA models….so I took my business to Mammoth in Anchorage, there I was free to try guitars. Employees were nice, but when I wanna guitar…give me space and let me try without supervision. Thanks Mammoth!
Nice selection of stringed instruments.
Young woman at front counter helpful, smiled, and made eye contact.
Guitar room guy not engaging or helpful, more interested in his phone than engaging with me.
Every guitar has a “do not handle” sign with a sign that there is a 5 minute limit on handling a guitar. No place to sit and try an instrument.
Other staff did not acknowledge me at all.
I was the only customer at the time.
I would maybe go back if I needed something but the customer service was absent at the time of my visit.
Petr is taking advantage of being one of the few violin shops in town. He is charging $63.00 for a pair of d’addario helicore full size violin strings. You can find them online anywhere from $33.00- $38.00. I am all about keeping a small business alive and don’t mind an up charge to do so but come on. The strings don’t even come in the original packaging so he is obviously getting them in bulk. Give us a chance to support you Petr’s Violin Shop.
8. Music & Arts
Address: 4623 Old Seward Hwy, Anchorage, AK 99503 , Y , Alaska , United States
Hayden Sterling fixed my wifes brothers guitar for free of charge after he told me they were no longer doing consignments as a way of showing good faith. I teach with this guitar every day and it plays like a dream.
If you look at the staff, the same year round staff members are workibg at the store and fI respected them highly before the buyout and I respect them highly now.
Hayden has time and time again done extra things for my family and me as a musician and teacher in the community.
I look at it like this. The Music and Arts store is provided a service that is not another video game store or screen time outlet for kids. They are bringing more music instruments to this state and they are doing things differently. No business that takes over another business does things the same way.
So, if the previous customer service by the same people was awesome, it will continue to be awesome. That beats the hell out of another amazon sellibg first act guitars to sixth graders. The community needs this store and the employees there are going to keep the same level of customer service going.
There will be some differences. I say judge your store employees by the content of their character and allow them the chance to either earn your business or decide to go elsewhere. No need to trash the employees who are now getting healthcare options that didnt have that before.
We are a long time client of the Music Man. Many students, many instruments, music lessons, etc. About 6 months ago I went to inquire about upgrading my daughters saxophone through their trade up program. They offered to buy back the entry level saxophone we purchased from MM and put that credit towards the purchase of the (much more expensive) next level of sax. I went in with my daughter on Friday to complete this task, old saxophone in hand right from the get go. She tried the new sax, loved it, and we went to the register. They then let me know they no longer offered a trade up program for students who purchased their instruments through MM due to new ownership. They also no longer offer a rent to own program. I was surprised they weren’t honoring any of the prior agreements or business plans that MM had offered, which were incredible for students wanting to give an instrument a try. The staff at M&A did “call the owner” who confirmed they were not honoring any former programs offered by the MM, no buyback, no credit towards new instruments, trade ins, etc. After a very frustrating visit, I ended up purchasing the new sax outright, and left with the entry level sax as well. But the business model of Music and Arts is not one that i’ll continue to visit, which is a shame because we really loved the Music Man. I will say Hayden was fabulous to work with at Music and Arts and very empathetic about parents, like myself, who were long time clients of the MM. M&A has lost my future business, we’ll be going to the Horn Doctor from here on out.
9. John Osnes Violins
Address: 8900 Jupiter Dr, Anchorage, AK 99507 , Y , Alaska , United States
I have bought and sold probably 25 instruments at John’s shop over the past 25 years, and give it the highest recommendation. John has been entrusted to work on some of the most expensive instruments in Alaska, and he’s just as considerate of the cheapest student models. He takes pleasure in giving expert and candid guidance to players of every style and ability level, and his pricing and trade-in policies are very fair. A pleasure to do business with.
Absolutely the best. Always. Couldn’t recommend more.
This place is in a residential home. Nice variety of instruments to choose from. Quality craftsmanship, I love his violas and cellos!
10. Whiteys Music Shoppe
Address: 43335 Kalifornsky Beach Rd #26, Soldotna, AK 99669 , Y , Alaska , United States
Ready like the store very helpful and always friendly attitude thank you
One of my favorite places.
Whitey’s had a pretty good vibe. It’s not a huge music store, but it does have a decent selection of instruments to choose from. The staff was very helpful and helped me get exactly what I was looking for while making small talk. Overall a good experience. The only reason I don’t give it 5 stars is because it’s pretty small and might not have everything you’re looking for, but it’s worth a visit to stop by and ask.
Doesn’t open till 12 o’clock and is closed on Thursdays.
Update: drove 30 miles today to come to whiteys, only to find that they were closed on Wednesday at 530 when there sign clearly stated till 6 pm….I knew this hence why I drove that from to come here……..this is infuriating…….how’s a business of such low caliber stay alive……..too bad I have to give them a star at all
11. Obsession Records
Address: 2217 E Tudor Rd #14, Anchorage, AK 99507 , Y , Alaska , United States
Obsession Records in Anchorage is a true gem of a record store. Owned by Steve and Verna, this shop is a paradise for vinyl lovers.
The selection at Obsession Records is absolutely stunning. They have a vast array of vinyl in all genres, from classic rock to contemporary hip hop. I was particularly impressed by their selection of hard-to-find records and rare imports.
But the real standout feature of Obsession Records is the customer service. Steve and Verna are true music enthusiasts, and they are always happy to chat with customers and share their knowledge and recommendations. They really go above and beyond to make sure that everyone has a great shopping experience.
The prices at Obsession Records are also very reasonable, and they grade their used vinyl accurately and fairly.
Overall, I can’t recommend Obsession Records enough. It’s a true treasure of Anchorage, and a must-visit for any vinyl lover!
Great store
Steve is always friendly and helpful. He is also one of the most knowledgeable people I know when it comes to music. If you don’t see what you are looking for he knows where it is or he will find it for you.
A Bunch of items including Rare items for sale!. Great experience!!
Great place – the owners really know there stuff. Wonderful atmosphere! Great place to spend an hour browsing through the records. You are sure to find what you are looking for
Was a little disappointed that they didn’t have any of the items that I was looking for
Duuuuuuuuuull. And unhelpful. Good for Anchorage, I guess.
12. Molesky Guitar Repair
Address: 1410 Hyder St suite b, Anchorage, AK 99501 , Y , Alaska , United States
The owner was very helpful. Great place for any sorts of musical needs. From harmonicas to royals, you’ll find it there.
Pretty cool spot in Fairbanks for guitars bit many basses but friendly staff and close to everything.
Salesman wasn’t wearing a mask and didn’t know where to find the instrument that I was looking for. However as I was leaving, the repair man found it and followed me out the door to let me know.
the back door of the place uses a guitar mounted on the ceiling as a door chime. its the coolest door chime idea ive ever seen.
Expensive
I came in with my dad to look at guitars and to ask a price on his old banjo. I know my instruments and how to find the correct prices on used items. The lady who helped us, gave us the correct price, but she was talking down to us the whole time. I have never seen my dad treated so rudely.
Not impressed by their customer service, although I did get what I needed done, thus the 2 stars. I’ve been a few times over a period of 7 years and both times they were rude. I’ve also known people who have said they were rude. I’ll try Pro Music next time perhaps.
14. Pro Music
Address: 300 Front St, Fairbanks, AK 99701 , Y , Alaska , United States
Super cool place for music lessons, instruments, and mining equipment. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly. Even our dog gets excited when we visit Music Mart! He loves that he gets to go in AND they have treats.
I have done business with Pro Music for years and they really know their stuff. Craig is the owner and I trust him completely. He is most knowledgeable person I know about musical gear and always gives me the straight answer even if it means buying from some place else. You cannot miss with Craig and Pro Music.
Awesome stuff and people here.
Good selection of mining equipment and friendly helpful employees, never bought music supplies. The owner is unfortunately both rude and condescending. Additionally, the prices on smaller items (pans, screens, matting) is extremely inflated. You can get the exact same stuff on eBay or Amazon for a fraction of the price even if you have to pay shipping to Alaska. It is a shame that a local store is so inattentive to customer service that we have to turn to online stores for mining supplies.
15. Alaska Music Center
Address: 1536 Gambell St, Anchorage, AK 99501 , Y , Alaska , United States
