One of if not the best place in Athens for vinyl. Everything is reasonably priced and I have found albums here that I’d never seen anywhere else.
Extensive selection of vinyl at great prices! Vintage stereo receivers & turntables are also available. Alan is extremely knowledgeable in a broad spectrum of music genres. Looking for something specific? He will work to find it for you. He travels all over to find the best vinyl. If you haven’t gone by yet, you’re missing out!
Really cool record store
Note: This is a booth inside an antiques store. Good prices and selections for this booth of both records and CDs.
Great place to shop, had a good selection of different venues of music.
Decent selection. Kinda pricy, but it’s fun to browse and occasionally find something one has to have.
3. Wurthy’s Records
Address: 155 E Clayton St, Athens, GA 30601 , Clarke County , Georgia , United States
Great shop with an impressive selection and friendly and helpful owner.
Best record shop in town, hands down no contest.
It’s Wuxtry… What else could a person need?
pretty expensive
Give selection but some of it is too highly priced
The shop was fun to walk through and was undoubtedly breathtaking, but there are several flaws that one must take into consideration. There was a wide selection of bands, but the number of albums they have from each band is lacking. In addition, the exchanging policy isn’t particularly worth your time. But besides that, it’s definitely a great place to visit!
Great selection tho they must be on drugs. The price for almost any used 80′ pressed album is 10 to 15 bucks. And I drove 40 miles for that. Rip off your college kids and pay your high dollar rent. Not a place for a music guy..They will pocket 95% more than the original artist…..
I was at Wuxtry today to meet Micky Dolenz. So while my experience with the actual store was only about three feet into the fridge my door…it’s been the best day of my life! Thank you to Wuxtry for bringing Monkees fans like me such an amazing event!!!
staff is rude and has a poor selection. also too expensive and is much too crowded. cashier was insulting other customers while I was at the counter also
5. Classic City Vintage Guitars
Address: 149 Oneta St Unit 6A1, Athens, GA 30601 , Clarke County , Georgia , United States
Classic City Guitars is everything you’d want in a shop- awesome used guitars for a good deal, friendly conversation and a beautiful space.
Dylan bailed me out on tour and did an emergency fret repair, and he expertly and quickly solved my fret issues. Easily one of the best repair techs I have ever met, and I say that as a repair tech myself. This is hands down THE spot in Athens, and the only sad part is that there isn’t a Classic City in every town.
Highest recommendation possible- if your guitar can be saved, Classic City is the place and Dylan is amazing
Most badass shop this side of the Mississippi. Not sure which is better: Dylan’s renown expertise or the fact that he makes you feel like you’ve known him for years.
Another great experience working with Dylan! He did a fantastic setup on a strat. I zoned out for over an hour when I got home and plugged it in. I first worked with Dylan on a mid 70s strat he restored and a 90’s Strat Plus setup. Both of these experiences were also great. It’s so good to know someone you can completely trust with something so important. Thanks so much Dylan!!!
Simply the best. Selections, service, prices, vibe, all amazing.
Great selection and they also have books and films. Well worth a stop!
This is the spot for expert information on the local music scene. Great selection of Vinyl records. An Athens institution
Good selection of cds and records. The guy working there seemed very knowledgeable about the music I bought. This place would be easy to miss if you were new to the area because the window front is small.
They have a lot of music.
Cool shop. Decent deals on records. Well organized. Thanks for the experience.
DONT CALL THE NUMBER ON GOOGLE. ITS MY PERSONAL NUMBER. Y’all need to change your phone number on google. It’s LITERALLY MY CELL PHONE NUMBER. I’m sick of getting calls looking for your store.
You won’t find a better tone or service from a boutique than Greer. I’ve had my light-speed overdrive on my board for years and have no plans to remove or replace it anytime soon. There’s a reason Zac Brown Band, Walk The Moon, Sheryl Crow, and many more bands’ guitarists use gear by Greer.
Find a better amp or a better dude… I dare you
Excellent
10. Smiley Sounds Recording Studio
Address: 766 W Broad St, Athens, GA 30601 , Clarke County , Georgia , United States
Jeremy and his team at ASM are the best! Very family friendly and good for all ages. I’m learning to play guitar at age 42 and will be performing in my first ensemble in June. If you are thinking about taking lessons I highly recommend stopping by to meet them and see their place in person.
My son has been taking guitar lessons here for a few years now. Jeremy does a great job. He has always been very patient and flexible. I highly recommend ASM!

12. Guitar Center
Address: 1791 Oconee Connector Suite 450, Athens, GA 30606 , Clarke County , Georgia , United States
If I could give more than 5 stars I would!! Dawne Norris and Zach Thigen are amazing. My 15 yr-old son has been playing for about 3 years now. We went down there to talk to someone about a custom ordered Martin. Dawne was not only helpful and friendly, but she was very knowledgable. She contacted Martin, and she and Zach worked with us through e-mail for at least a week until they created the exact guitar that my son wanted. It will not be ready until September, but even still Dawne has called and touched base with us, and stayed in contact. These people really care about what they do, and they want you to have an experience you’ll never forget.
Thanks Dawne and Zach…you guys really ROCK!!
Lamar, Mark & Lisa
Mike, the guitar tech, did a great job restringing my guitars!
Excellent service and employees!
The guy with the long curly hair is just too cute
Employee behind the counter was helpful and didnt try to upsell me a higher priced item
Friendly staff without being pushy. Seemed like it could have been better stocked. But they were having the guitarathon sale so that could have contributed to limited stock.
Purchased a Gibson SG Standard from this location within the past two years. The buying experience was ok. Called to see if they had a Gibson SG Modern I could try because I’m in the market. Told them if I like it I will buy it from them. If I don’t like it, I would definitely buy another SG. They refused to ship in from another store since they didn’t have it in inventory and they could offer no alternative solutions. I’ll take my business to a competitor for sure. I’m not spending $2400 on something I can’t put eyes on first. Who would? As a fellow musician said, these guys are the WalMart of customer service for guitars.
Update: I took a weekend road trip to Nashville and bought a SG Modern directly from Gibson. And that was after sampling anything I wanted to touch, feel, and play. I appreciate Guitar Center reaching out to my post but I don’t think I was the first to have the experience I did after reading some other reviews. Oh, and Gibson gives a veteran’s discount. On top of the hard case, warranty, and expert tune-up.
The staff didn’t seem interested in giving me any help or advice on choosing a new guitar.
I just left out of this store and the associate who “attempted” to serve me was terrible. I wanted to return a brick of sticks, that hadn’t been opened AND order the correct ones. That’s exactly what I told him. Well….the only thing he did was refund me my money. He didnt ask if I wanted to order the correct sticks or anything. He simple handed me my receipt and didn’t say another freakin word. As I was departing the store, 2 other guys came in. This same associate perked up…all of a sudden he became excited and happy…Hey How Are You Doing….Can I Help You With Anything….but I didnt get any of those words from him. Not to mention he didnt make any effort to order the product I wanted. This in my book is poor customer service. That associate needs to go to Chick-Fil-a and learn the meaning of Customer Service……And when I called back to ask for the store manager, he/she was not available. However the manager on Duty never came to the phone. This was a horrible and completely terrible experience.
