Just recently bought a Bass from here. Staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable. They are very patient as well; as I’m still a beginner player and had never purchased an instrument. Yet the gentleman that helped me was very calm and patient, and very transparent and honest the entire interaction. Would recommend a dozen times over!

Great store and lessons as well. My son has been in drum lessons from over a year. Tony is a great teacher and very patient.

A week and a half later, I’m waiting on a repair that was supposed to take two days. They called on the day it was supposed to be done to say they just started working on it. Two days after that they called again to say it will be done in a week (or maybe less) due to a problem with the instrument that requires additional work. Today (a week later) they said it will be ready two weeks from the day I brought it in. While I can’t comment on the quality of the work because I still haven’t received it yet, I am disappointed with the service so far. I dislike dishonesty, excuses, and false promises. I can only hope that my instrument isn’t being butchered. I hope I’ll get it back and be able to add a positive update to this review. Unfortunately since they lied to me, I can’t trust them, so I’ll have to take it somewhere else to get it checked out after I get it back.

Update: I got the guitar back and had it checked out by a friend’s technician. He said it was in good shape, so I’ve decided to raise my rating by two stars. I won’t forget the bad communication and lack of transparency, so I don’t think I would bring an instrument here for repair a second time.

Why would I come here to buy $21 Elixir Strings when I can get them for $10 on Amazon? Are these even elixirs? I am 2nd guessing because the seal was ripped and the bags are crinkled inside. I feel like I was ripped off here, do not come here for your strings maybe they are knowledgable, but definatley sketchy.

Was looking for a specific pair of drumsticks that I needed. I walked in and took a look at the selection they had, and they didn’t have what I needed. I asked a staff member if they could help me out and he helped me figure out what pair I needed. He happened to be the drum instructor. While trying to find the specific pair, my mother who was with me told me that he made her feel uncomfortable because of the way he acted towards her. When they “ordered” it for me and they said it’ll be here in a week.

One week later, I called to see if it had arrived. They said no. I stopped by the next day to see if it arrived and the same instructor said they’ll stop by tomorrow and pick it up for me. (From whatever warehouse they get their stuff from). The next day, guess what? THEY DIDN’T HAVE IT.

Unbelievable service. Waste of time and effort. I ended up going to A-Major Music in Gurnee. Trust me, it is worth the drive and they are MUCH more friendlier and helpful there.

I bought two sets of acoustic guitar strings for around a $20 total and later received a $140 charge from the business. Bob said he would reach out to resolve the issue but has not yet after two weeks.

Store staff are incompetent. Ordered books and instruments accessories for me but instead of holding behind the counter they just put them on the shelf for others to buy. Waited two weeks and when I got there only one of the three things I ordered was available. There is a reason mom-and-pop shops like this are going out of business. They have no customer service. Added to which the staff were rude and had a lack of knowledge that was sad.

I recently purchased a 2018 Custom Shop Taylor, and I couldn’t be happier! Gorgeous guitar! The customer service is top-notch! Thank you Tobias family for a wonderful experience!

I live in Indianapolis and was visiting Chicago when I needed a guitar string for my brothers guitar. I stopped in Tobias and told them what my problem was and they had his guitar repaired and ready to play for us in a matter of minutes. While waiting, the staff was great and showed us around the store and patiently answered any question I asked. I would die to have this shop in my neighborhood.

They are more of a acoustic guitar place not really a place for bass players .

So, I am knocking down my review from five stars to three; due to my most recent experience a couple months after the first one. So I reached backout to buy another guitar (place order) as I really wanted an AD22e or another model I can’t remember, but after confirming they could place the order I let them know that I wanted the AD22e and to provide me the full price so we could close the deal and they went silent, mind you I didn’t even get a copy of the receipt from my AD27e that never came which I had also requested from the last conversation.

I did finally get my guitar ordered but I had a national retailer place the order. I was disappointed I didn’t hear back from Tobias Music about completing the purchase and obtaining a copy of the receipt for my AD27e that never came.

Just bought an AD27e (Taylor) from them after finding it for sale online. it was a great buying experience. I’m a lefty, buying guitars online is the norm, and most of the time guitars I buy take a day or two to pack and ship. we had a few emails back and forth and they were quick to respond and very professional. These guys had it packed and shipped the same day, and I didn’t place my order until after lunch; that’s service.

They also took the time to dial the guitar in; it came with the action set and was tuned ready to play out of the box. Paul did a great job and really made this buying experience easy, and hassle free. I’ll have to check back often to see what other lefty guitar they get in. If I have the chance, I will buy from them again.

Currently my favorite place to visit. With a passion before profit mentality obvious in the prices of his products, and services. The owner of this hand built haven, is more than willing to share the magic that is music, flowing within the walls of his personal eden.

The owners were rude and condescending. I got the impression that not EVERYONE was welcome in their store. They may have a large selection of music, but I’ll take my money and my dignity to other music stores.

Hold on, this one is a doozy.

I brought my guitar in for a simple restring and setup last Monday. I had brought the exact same guitar and exact same gauge strings in about six months or so prior and left without any issues and being an overall very satisfied customer.

This time, however, was a complete 180. Now, I do run a weird gauge setup and have very heavy E, A, and D strings. But like I said, I had absolutely no issues the last time I brought my guitar in. I get my guitar back, get home, and start playing. Right off the bat, my guitar was way out of tune. I didn’t think much of it figuring the strings were probably still needing to stretch. I tried for a solid 30 minutes to get the guitar in tune and just could not get it. No matter what I did there were still a couple strings that just would not get to where they were supposed to be.

I started playing some more and immediately noticed really bad fret buzz all over the neck. At this point I’m pretty annoyed because this has been a terrible job thus far. I then find that the action is so low that there’s virtually no space between the strings and the first fret. I tried playing some more but the guitar kept coming out of tune. The guitar has locking tuners and I noticed that all the strings are wound multiple times around the post and multiple strings not only had multiple winds, but the winds were overlapping and incredibly sloppy looking. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve always been told that you don’t need to wind a string on a locking tuner. The strings weren’t wound around the posts the last time I had the restring and setup done.

At this point I’m pretty upset by the quality of the work done. Just to cover all of my bases, I checked the intonation and boy howdy, it was off by a country mile on every single string.

So I call to tell these guys what a mess my guitar is and that I’m quite upset with the workmanship performed. They tell me I need to speak with the tech. The tech calls me like an hour to an hour and a half later and I start explaining all of the issues I have with the guitar. I was respectful and courteous but this guy just wasn’t having it. He kept cutting me off and talking over me every time I tried to explain the issues. He really started getting loud when I told him the intonation was off. He basically called me a liar and told me to bring the guitar in so he could check it out and keep it for a day or two to make sure everything was good. With how disrespectful he was, I wasn’t having it. I was willing to let them correct their mistakes without a fuss but now I had had enough.

I drove up there and simply told the employee that the work performed was atrocious and that the unpleasant phone call I had with the tech was the deal breaker. I told him at this time I just want my money back and that I would be taking my stuff elsewhere from now on. The employee refunded my money without question, so thank you for that, Spencer.

I don’t know how long that tech has been working on guitars and I don’t know if he was having a bad day, but you can’t let stuff like that leave the shop. If I did work like that and let it leave, I would be embarrassed. Not only that, but you can’t be so disrespectful to your customers because you don’t believe what they’re saying. Get it together man, this place is gonna lose a lot of business if more people have to deal with what I did.

I had 5 string bass guitar set up it was terrible ! I told them I wanted low action with no buzz they did the opposite and stripped out my truss rod nut real bad I won’t be back

I bought a new Martin from here and gave detailed specs to setup for their “certified” guitar tech. The nut action was unplayable. No mention of blemishes on the neck and finish. Won’t return my texts now. Also told me they would ship it out on early dec 20th. Didn’t go out until end of day on December 22nd. I wouldn’t recommend anyone deal with them. I am now sitting on NEW unplayable Martin guitar that isn’t as described. I’m sorry but if their tech is a professional he could simply read feeler gauges. The nut action is .024 on one side and .010 on the other. ?? Have pictures to back all this up as well.

I was given my grandfather space guitar a few years ago. It has been a few decades since it has been maintenanced. I am a very particular person and after seeing the work that these guys do I decided it was best in their hands. They did an exceptional job restoring and get in my bass up to a playable condition. I am now a customer forever. The shop is conveniently located and they have a lot of really fantastic instruments in stock and do above and beyond work.

What a great place to have your prised possessions worked on. Great prices and customer service. They know what they’re doing and they do it well. This is a hidden jem in the Bolingbrook area for musicians. Thank you Steve and Phil.

Some vinyl and CDs too, although it has very few, if any, hidden treasures. 2 stars removed because the one employee and 2 of the customers were not wearing masks when I visited. My 13 year-old son has been taking drum lessons at North Shore Music for 2 years. He’s also in the studio’s band camp which places him with other students to form a rock band. They perform in public around Wilmette. He absolutely loves it and so do we parents. Alejandro and his staff are terrific!

found out they had a used Warwick Thumb bass I was interested in.. Stopped in on a Monday afternoon.. They handed me the bass ..and left me alone to try it out.. I loved it, but wasn’t crazy about the action . The guy behind the counter said ” our set up guy isn’t here but we can try to make it better ” . They did.. I bought the bass and love it.. ..as far as the only one star review ..Seriously , is there a heavy market demand for a used trombone ??

After politely declining their laughably low offer to buy my trombone, the sales associate became unfriendly and demanded that I give him a counter offer. The poor customer service and the dismal offer to buy my trombone were very surprising to me; I was expecting far more from a business with so many positive reviews.

Mike & Don are so helpful, really go above and beyond. They’re the only 2 we’ve worked with so far but so patient and informative in helping with our rentals, repairs, and our recent purchase of a trumpet. Don helped us greatly through that process. Really recommend!

DO NOT BRING YOUR INSTRUMENT HERE FOR REPAIRS. Took my son’s alto sax in only to fix the octave key, that’s it. Was serviced by a pleasant lady and was told I’d get a call the next business day with an estimate after inspection. Next day came and went with no call, so I called 2nd day and was given the estimate, told repair would take 2 weeks and authorized the work, and was told I’d be contacted when completed. After 2 1/2 weeks and no call, I called to check the status. Was told it was still in the shop and would HOPEFULLY be done at the end of the week, which would made 3 weeks total in the shop. The word HOPEFULLY was a trigger word and red flag, so I requested for a guarantee it would be done and the guy on the phone wouldn’t commit to that. After 3 1/2 weeks and no call, I decide to show up in person to get the status. I was serviced by the original pleasant lady, requested a status, she checked the computer, stated she needed to call up the repair technician for a status, got on the phone with him and acknowledged to him the notes showed they told me it would be done the previous week. He tells her to tell me he will TRY to have it done SOON!!! I immediately said no that’s not good enough and asked for a guaranteed date. She asked if I’d like to speak directly to the repair technician. He commenced to talk about how delicate the repair is and the time. I asked had he even started on it, he said the week after I brought it in (I don’t believe that), then I asked why can’t it be done by the end of that week (the 4th week), and then he starts talking about how many other instruments he has to repair. BINGO, now we get to the real problem, they can’t handle the volume and don’t communicate that to the customers. Then to give them a last shot at my business, I requested for priority to complete my repair (a broken octave key), since it has now been almost 4 weeks and I’m physically standing in the shop. He would NOT commit to giving me priority. TERRIBLE SERVICE and treatment of a customer given the circumstance they created! Immediately I asked if my sax was fully assembled and he answered yes (wait, I thought he started working on it??), and I requested that lady in the shop to go get it. I told the repair tech on the phone I’m taking it home and hung up. The lady came back with my sax, closed out the ticket no charge and I left. Communication, communication, communication………they are terrible at this. There was failure at communication at every single interaction with this shop. From not communicating a REAL timeline through the door, from not communicating the real issue with my status, to not making it right. DO NOT TAKE YOUR INSTRUMENT HERE FOR REPAIR. I now see there are other bad reviews for their repair service. I wish I would had saw them before blowing a whole month with them just to still have an unrepaired sax.

Horrible customer service, has had my son’s instrument for almost 3 weeks, only needed a cleaning and grease the sliders, called and won’t even give me an estimate of when it will be done!

My daughter was in an orchestra and rented a violin from Ellman’s, at the end of the school year we decided not to continue. I asked the teacher how to cancel and she said to email them and return the instrument to her, which is what I did. Emailed them on June 4th, never got a reply, got another charge on my account in July. I called them and they said they were heading out that week to pick up instruments and once they had it they would refund my two payments. It is now August and I got a third charge. Called them again and was now told I have to fill out some form online or the rep won’t know that he has to pick up the instrument, and that they don’t have the instrument returned. So now I have paid over $52 in fees for a violin I returned, was never told to fill out the form and was promised a refund that now they do not want to honor. They told me the charges will stop once the violin is returned…..I ALREADY RETURNED IT. These people have poor customer service and obviously poor record keeping, I am irate and will tell everyone I know about how poor their service is.

Excellent! My 17 year old son and my special needs brother have been taking lessons here for over a year. My daughter started at 9 years then decided to try something else. They were great with both age groups. The owners and staff are friendly and the business has been supportive of the local community! I highly recommend!

I like this place a lot. I stopped in to check it out and saw that they made beautiful instruments. While chatting with the owner I found out that they also gave lessons. I’ve been taking bass lessons there for over a month now and I’m kicking myself for not doing it earlier.

I would just like to say I had my 1st experience with GTR music and from the get go Roger was a great guy. I called him as I was going through town he was not open yet, and he said I will be there in 10 minutes. Lo and behold he was there in 10 minutes and I spent about 45 minutes in the store, what a great guy what a great company. Friendly personable knowledgeable very down-to-earth I would recommend anybody go here to get their guitars fixed, or just go hang out.

Just wanted to post an update on the Kallo Bartok I received in January. The tone changes every month. It becomes richer and the overtones on this thing are wonderful. The director of our string group commented “give that thing another year and it is going to roar.” Please tell Claude his work is phenomenal and the final adjustments completed by Stringworks made an amazing instrument. I may be purchasing a viola from you guys made by him in the near future.

Our son is an advanced high school cellist wanting to take his passion to the next level. We researched luthiers and cello stores extensively before gratefully choosing StringWorks. Todd and Evan made the process seamless and fun with such great care in communication! We decided on their Gofriller model Kallo Bartok and the results? Wow, just WOW!

“Better than Christmas morning!” – our son said. He could tell immediately after a quick tuning that this cello is THE ONE for him. It truly sounds magnificent.

Nope! I am going to let the pictures speak for themselves. This was supposed to have been worked on by the head luthier, took 3 weeks to arrive, AND cost $1,500! looks like a junior high project that would have gotten a poor grade. I could not ship it back to them fast enough! Utter trash.

So very disappointed. I guess they are lucky that I am not reporting them to the BBB.

What a wonder place to purchase or rent a violin! Very helpful and understanding when it comes to what is right for you and your family. Every time I have brought the violin in for service they have been friendly and quick about service. If you are thinking of getting a violin this is the place you need to be going to. The store also has a great selection of music to choose from! They will have one location opening soon and that will be in Batavia.

One of, if not, THE BEST string instrument shops in the Chicagoland area. I’ve gone here for years for replacement strings, bow rehairs, rosin, music, shoulder rests, instrument adjustments, etc. Highly recommended for any violin, viola, cello, or string bass player.

Greg and Mel are the greatest. They have helped my daughters over the years with violin, viola and cello rentals. They are very accommodating and always there to help with a tune up or string replacement. I can not say enough of their customer service, outstanding. Thank you so much.

I gave this place a bad review after dealing with a younger employee But when the manager was alerted to the situation (A few days later) it was dealt with fairly. Kagan and Gains has a long time reputation in their neighborhood of being the first choice for musical lessons of any instrument and Fair pricing on instruments and accessories. It may not be the best place to shop for a new guitar But they can handle all your needs afterwords. I recommend them for all your strings, Guitar cases, Band instruments, ect. You will find all of them are of good quality and pricing.

I hate to agree with the user below who complained of a dishonest experience, but we are going through the same. I’ve read all of the other 5 star reviews and notice a pattern: it seems that for violin and stringed instruments, this is a great place. For renting brass/woodwind instruments via their monopoly with the school districts, they are subpar and dishonest. We should have just purchase a used instrument which would have resulted in us obtaining a superior instrument at, I am not exaggerating, 1/4 the total cost. We just had to call them to stop processing our credit card when we noticed we had been paying an abnormally long time on my daughter’s VERY USED, VERY DENTED saxophone (4 years!). We were “reassured” that, coincidentally, they were just going to call us as well as our payments happened to be completed. Yet they have no records of all the payments that we made, and are asking us to provide payment records going back to 2017 to “prove” how much we have paid in total. Luckily for us, we can easily provide them as they have all been made on the same credit card for years. We are also disputing the amount owed as our daughter’s original “nicer” model saxophone broke, was taken in for repairs, and she was given a loaner, student-model, older and dented sax. Her other one was never repaired and instead she’s just had this one forever. We were told at the time it would be “worked out.” Now they want us to pay the same amount as they were going to charge for the initial instrument to keep this replacement instrument permanently, as they also claim to have NO record that any switch was ever made or that the original saxophone was ever brought in for repairs. Typically, I endeavor to support neighborhood shops, but not when their record keeping is straight out of Mayberry. This is taking a lot of our time and energy to sort out, and we’ve ultimately laid out over $2300 to own an instrument that I have found at multiple music stores online for around $600 and under. We understand that renting the own is typically more expensive, but this feels like being swindled in every way. Extremely disappointed. My husband has been playing music for over 40 years – he also used to play saxophone – and his mother is a professional classical musician. He is used to dealing with all sorts of music shops and has never had an experience like this one.

I rarely write reviews, but wow, everything about this place is awesome. All the staff members here are so incredibly friendly, hospitable, and kind; there’s a real charm in the atmosphere here. The instruments here are high quality, and they have an incredibly wide range of instruments as well. Patricia, the store owner, is truly so kind and I mean it when I say that she makes you feel like family.

I’ve been looking to purchase a viola for the last few months now, and I’ve visited numerous stores in my area. Although this place is about a 40 minute drive from me, there’s no other place I’d rather go to after coming here. I was seriously blown away the second I came in because of how kind everyone is, and the large variety of instruments in my specific price range was a pleasant surprise. Again, the customer service here is unmatchable and they have an incredibly wide range of relatively affordable, but high quality instruments. I couldn’t recommend this business more – definitely my favorite string store around the western/northwestern suburbs.

Cordogan’s Pianoland has a nice selection of grand pianos, uprights, and digital pianos. The staff is friendly, and the selection ranges from Estonia to Kawaii to Yamaha and some other brands.

The sales people were overly aggressive and the prices were outrageously high. Not worth the drive from Winnetka.

Yes this is the guy you charged for the action setup and you dinged and cracked the back of my beautiful OMJM martin guitar. Guitar is priceless to me and it breaks my heart that you can be so careless towards MY beloved instrument. I hate myself for trusting anyone with my guitar. Long story short, check your guitar before you put it in the case and leave with it from the store, better yet, don’t hand your guitar over to man who will work on it inside the store.
