Was very happy with this location the cashier was very friendly
Austin has excellent guitar, instrument and parts knowledge all around. If your looking for something hand crafted that isn’t something you can just pick up at a music store, go with saucy sounds !
Very precise work done by Austin. Has a very good talent for what this is. I suggest anybody that wants a personal handcrafted guitars. Definitely look Austin up. Saucy sounds
Goldrush bought my Dad’s guitar collection. An old Fender, Gibson and some acoustic guitars. Didn’t have to take them all over to different guitar stores. He came to the house and we made a deal right on the spot. Hassle free. Thank you Al!
Was very pleased to know that Gold Rush guitars offered a mobile appraisal and guitar buying service. When I called and spoke to Al, he was very professional and knowledgeable and was able to give me details on a few guitars I had. I’m glad that they’ll be able to find new homes!
Thank you for being fair and honest with the offer that you gave me for my grandfather’s guitar collection. We couldn’t be happier to see his Gibson and Fender collection live on with other musicians!
6. The Music Store
Address: 4815 Granite Dr, Rocklin, CA 95677 , Herald , California , United States
Awesome store with great services and lessons. I took clarinet lessons for a few years and piano lessons as well. The teachers were effective and engaging.
Got some new strings on this baby and it’s sounds even better than in the store
Friendly staff and very helpful.
I rented a used violin for my son from the shop. They said the price was $199. The rental was $35 per month. after two months if you want to own the violin then they said they would deduct the rental amount from the original price. But when we want to buy the used violin they said the price is $299 which is hell more than a new violin. So would recommend not to rent or buy anything from this store.
7. Gordon’s Music & Sound
Address: 810 Texas St, Fairfield, CA 94533 , Herald , California , United States
From personal experience i can say without a doubt that Gordon is a honest man, if you want to be frank with the gentleman he wont lead you astray. Be respectful!
You can rent an instrument for your kid’s school music class here. The prices were reasonable. They are very knowledgeable and showed me how to assemble the saxophone. Also, they were very helpful on how to clean it and how to properly attach the reed (including how to wet the reed properly). They were very patient with all the questions I had for the instrument, the rental process, etc.
Great customer service and great selection.
nice music
Tienda muy bonita te dejan probar la mayoría de instrumentos. Tienen bastante variedad por lo que es la zona y buenas ofertas. Guitarras hermosas.
The only problem I have with Gordon’s is the prices I paid $23.45 for one oboe reed and to me I think that is very pricey
I was missing a reed for my clarinet. Horrible.
We returned our rental violin a week before it was due and still were charged for the next month. When I contacted Gordon’s they stated they would look into it. After many calls back and forth of them verifying that yes we had turned it in on time they said they would look into a refund. A month later still no refund. When I called again I was told by Mr. Gordon that maybe the problem was with my bank, that perhaps they were deciding not to post the credit.
Bought a used supposedly “gone through” Marshall amp and brand new guitar and boss effects system. Brought both back numerous times because the sound from one of the two was cutting out. All returns to the store provided that they couldn’t find the problem. When I returned home each time the cutting out of sound was apparent and obvious. The store would not refund my cash payment to buy a new amplifier but insisted I could trade for something else only. I took the amp to another guitar shop in Sacramento and before I finished looking around the tech had found a cold solder joint with cracks in it which should have been obvious to someone that has been in the business for years. They either knew what was wrong and were too cheap to fix it, or they due to inexperience really had no idea. I had to pay to have it repaired when I shouldn’t have had to. I will never go back again. I would highly not recommend anyone buying from them as they don’t stand behind their products. I also purchased almost $2000.00 worth of equipment from them to get screwed like I did. Thumbs down!
8. Herald
Address: California , Herald , California , United States
9. The Nicholson Music Co.
Address: 636 E Bidwell St, Folsom, CA 95630 , Herald , California , United States
I went to check out this place. It’s a little out of my way but worth the trip. The staff was very professional, polite, and no sales pressure. It was an absolute pleasure, what a store. I highly recommend shopping here.
Good store with polite staff.
So many people complaining about the lack of service or complain about not being able to get a guitar down themselves. THERE ARE SIGNS EVERYWHERE SAYING TO ASK FOR HELP!!!! (Yes I have not read them too and been “scolded” if you will but in a very professional and helpful manner…now I know the rules!!!)
1) They are NOT a giant music super store and they don’t let you just grab guitars off the wall. So be prepared to ask someone for help. If just one of those were damaged or broken it would cost them a lot of money and being small they don’t have the margins to make up for a loss easily.
I have been in many times… I have purchased several instruments over a decade (4 guitars and a Uke) from them and they have always been great. They don’t really know me and I’m sure don’t really remember me with all their customers. Last time I came in and I was not really wearing nice close… mostly yard work cloths that were not very dirty. The older gentleman still helped me and didn’t even bat an eye when I asked to play an expensive guitar…
Sometimes they are busy, remember they are a SMALL local shop with only a few employees…. so I have had to wait a bit to get someone to help get a guitar down.
2) Service and Repair are phenomenal!
Every guitar I have purchased has had to wait in the shop for a day after purchase. They tune the guitar and put a new set of strings on it. They tune it to exactly how I like to play with the set of strings I choose. A few times they have even thrown in the strings for free (on more expensive guitars!)
I even brought in an old Takamine that I had neglectfully left in the garage for a few weeks. Nick came right out made some adjustments and instead of having me pay him $100 to “look it over and fix it” he basically made the adjustments on the spot that he could and suggested I leave it as is… since it was not worth fixing completely at that point. HONEST!!!!! and he was super helpful.
I have seen them, every time I am in there, take an instrument and try their best to help the customer fix it on the spot without charging them. I have even seen people leave their instruments there and when they find out that there was nothing that could be done they don’t even charge them for the 30 minutes it took to take apart and put the instrument back together…
RULES TO KNOW WHEN GOING INTO NICHOLSON’S
1) Don’t touch anything without asking first. The “old guy” with the accent is not being mean just because he doesn’t smile at you when you ignore the hundreds of signs telling you to NOT TOUCH WITHOUT ASKING!.
2) They are small… and busy… don’t expect to run in and out.
3) Expect the best for what you pay. This means even if you buy a $600 guitar (yes I have bought a few), Expect that they will want to make that instrument play as best as it can for your style and expertise level. They have always tuned and modified mine to make them play awesome.
4) Don’t be a baby and cry when no one runs up to help you in 30 seconds. When was the last time you got any help at a big box store… and even if you did there is no way they had even 1/10th the knowledge these guys do.
In conclusion.. I am just a regular guy who has to drive 30 minutes to get to their store. I have purchased from big box stores, online and from Nic’s…. I prefer Nic’s because they care about their customers and want every instrument to leave being the best it can be.
I don’t really know anyone at the store besides seeing them a few dozen times over the years. They surely don’t know me… and they treat me the same great way every time…
Large selection of guitars
Decent service and friendly staff
I need a stand for tomorrow lesson because mine broke. It is closed on MONDAY the service is good but the prices for rent are high for rented items.
It is unfortunate that I was not able to receive the great customer service others described on this store. I went in to ask questions and buy a guitar for my son. I waited 15 minutes to be helped. There were three people working as far as I could tell, and no one came to help or even said they would be right with me. After that length of time I felt uncomfortable and left. I’m not one to stand right at the counter and demand attention. I walked around and looked at each guitar displayed, but didn’t really know what to look for. It is a small store so I should have been noticed. Yes, they were busy and helping others but there were only three other customers in the shop. I will be buying my guitar somewhere else.
This shop is close to my home and has a reasonable selection and decent prices for its size. I don’t mind paying an extra 10% over what I would pay at Guitar Center if I can support small and local business. BUT the service here is pretty sparse and harsh.
As someone else said, customers are not permitted to handle any instruments (including $150 guitars) without assistance, and the assistance can be hard to come by. I kinda feel if you’re gonna spend 4 figures on a piece a gear you outta be able to look it over, feel it, and play it without having someone hovering over you. There are some products customers are not allowed to even LOOK AT, much less handle, without an escort. After all, it’s a music store, not a museum. I understand they don’t wanna have to discount products because someone mishandledthemt, but if that’s your policy it would be nice to have customer service that actually services the customer.
Rude and unprofessional people.
10. The Starving Musician – Berkeley
Address: 2474 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley, CA 94704 , Herald , California , United States
This has always been a great store, good friendly staff, good deals on equipment.
I got a korg volca keys from these guys, the dude was super patient and helpful. They price matched (mostly) and threw in batteries, will definitely be coming back here instead of GC.
Good selection but was told after about an hour to “wrap it up” dude couldn’t even make eye contact. Rude, was looking for a new rig and possibly another guitar…I’ll just go to watermelon in Davis, better selection anyways
Good gear!
Friendly and conscientious staff when our online pickup order didn’t go through. Easy to get the strings we wanted.
COVID: The staff asked every customer to use hand sanitizer at the door and confirmed mask use. The staff was wearing their masks, though they weren’t always secured. There is plexi glass along the entire register offering a pretty decent shield during transactions and queries. A narrow store, but with the door open it felt ventilated.
Went to buy strings/strap and the guy sold me 12-string strings. When I went back in to exchange them he handed me the correct strings and told me they were the same price (they’re not). I paid $25 for strings…..avoid this scammy shop
Didn’t buy my gear lol
I went in to the Starving Musician and, to start, not one employee uttered a word to me. Second I wanted to play a bass, but there was no cable. I grab a cable and discover that not a single bass amp would power on, even when plugged in. On top of it, none of the employees seemed to really care anyway. Come on, it’s a music store– people are supposed to be chill and happy to be there. You guys are just as bad as the people in Seattle. I wouldn’t go back.
11. Berkeley Musical Instrument Exchange
Address: 2923 Adeline St, Berkeley, CA 94703 , Herald , California , United States
Carl has worked on several of my guitars, two bass’s and an acoustic electric guitar. Besides being an awesome luthier, he is also a really cool guy!
He did everything on my Warwick from fixing the neck, to getting the electronics working again and he did it all in a timely and professional manner!
I would highly recommend him and continue to use him for all my luthier needs.
I own a Taylor Acoustic Electric that I purchased back in 2011. I’ve never had it serviced before but kept it well maintained over the 10 years. I definitely noticed that it wasn’t playing the same as well I first bought it. Chalmers Guitars made it feel brand new and made me remember why I got the Taylor in the first place. Also gave me a great deal!
Carls the best to work with! Very friendly and professional dude. Getting all my guitar work done with this guy. Communication is necessary to get your guitar playing how you want it to feel, this guy is top notch at doing that!
13. The Strum Shop
Address: 209 Vernon St, Roseville, CA 95678 , Herald , California , United States
Very nice people and a great place for ukelele lessons!
I went to the Strum Shop where I was greeted by Dr. Dan, a very nice man who seems knowledgeable about acoustic instruments. he was super helpful and told me my guitar would be done in 2 days. I got it back the next day. The work was pretty good and the string rattle was fixed but I discovered a couple weeks later he had made a new slot for the high E string on the nut (which I didn’t ask for) and as a result the strings are now not evenly spaced. I have to get a new nut put on now which is disappointing.
He did put a new pickup on for a fair price which works great and I appreciate that! It’s a very nice guitar shop run by very nice folks. I’m sure I’ll go back at some point but I’m a little bummed about having to get a new nut put on as a result of the initial work.
Cool
Had all manner of steering instruments, plus. Also they give music lessons for drums, violin, ukulele, plus more.
I brought a guitar to adjust the action. Dan did not place the parts I asked for saying he did not have it on stock. Inaccurate repair job with replacing the guitar nut. Honestly I could adjust my guitar better than this “professional repair master” “Doctor” Dan. Waisted $80. Very unsatisfied. I would not recommend any repairs in this shop/store.
Went in and there was a class going on with 20+ people crammed into a tiny space, not one of them wearing a mask. Only one other person in the entire store had one on, none of the staff. Fully 1/3rd of Sac Co. is completely unvaccinated. I’m immune compromised [along with some 7,000,000 other American citizens] & disabled. The ABSOLUTE BARE MINIMUM of decency and community protection is apparently an outrageous expectation. They also had some absurd overpricing. I vastly prefer non-corporate local stores, but they can F right off if they’re not going to do even the simplest, most pitifully minor actions to do their part in not further spreading a wildly uncontrolled global pandemic that has killed nearly a million U.S. humans, and is far from over. Still averaging a quarter million cases a day, and over 2,000 deaths [more than any time since last winter, still]. They don’t even REQUEST that people wear some kind of face covering. Reprehensible madness, and unless this changes I will not support or recommend them to my musician friends. Please be better, nobody should be forced to exclude themselves from society JUST because of laziness or ignorance and non-measures that throw disabled folks under the bus.
I originally came in to get a new nut cut for my Gibson SG. The repair took longer and cost more than originally advertised, and the repair man left several issues that I had to fix myself (buzzing on A and low E, new tuning problems due to roughness of nut slots, high action, used strings other than the ones I’d left for him and specifically asked for him to use). Fortunately, however, when I brought this up with the shop, out of the $50 that I was charged, I was refunded $40 labor cost. (Still on the hook for $10 though).
EDIT: The manager for the Strum Shop started hassling me over text message after I posted this review. LOL.
14. Walmart Supercenter
Address: 10470 Twin Cities Rd, Galt, CA 95632 , Herald , California , United States
This store have more items than most of the other Walmart stores. Especially the bakery area have more cookies and fresh baked. Very clean, self check out. Nice peoples and friendly staff.
Typically Walmart
It has almost everything you need
Customer service sucks prices are getting ridiculous
The Placerville WalMart is the worst store l have shopped at!!
It is always understocked…
You can not find a employee on the floor for help in their departments..any of them!
Compared to other stores l have shopped at “Folsom,Ca
Galt,Ca..Lodi,Ca..Stockton,Ca
Manteca,Ca… Modesto,Ca (2)
Ceres,Ca…Turlock,Ca.. Merced,Ca
(Galt,Ca WalMart
Ceres,Ca Walmart are BEST)
Management in Placerville also poor… under staffed
PLEASE FIX Placerville
As a spark driver it would really help and save us time and possibly late deliveries if the pickers/selectors would bag the groceries as they pick.
15. Foggy Mountain Music
Address: 104 W Main St, Grass Valley, CA 95945 , Herald , California , United States
great people great place – they love music. buy local!
Cool little store
Cool local store
Best knowledgeable music store around gv they will even let you hookup and play a toon to tryout equipment they offer lessons and have a friendly helpful staff looking to fitt your specific needs and interests
Great guitar lessons. Great deals, they price match guitar center too! My son got a gorgeous electric guitar for Christmas to upgrade from his child-sized Ibanez, and the customer service was great.
Very cool rustic music store with knowledgeable, friendly staff.
Absolutely terrible service. POOR selection of instrument strings (they never buy them) They’ve fired their most charismatic workers. The owner/”manager” will ignore you if she’s on the phone. Had an amp in there for six months that was more broken when I got it back, than when I brought it in, due to their “guitar tech” Steve. Worst music store in North California, if I could give zero stars I would.
Drove there on Sunday, as Google said they were open. They were not.
Owners are rude
16. Steve Deutsch Woodwinds
Address: 560 1st St d100, Benicia, CA 94510 , Herald , California , United States
Excellent woodwind repairs. Trustworthy, efficient owner and repairman.
I drove all the way from Alameda to have Steve repair a Selmer Reference 54 tenor sax. I had bought this horn at an auction so the G# key was not working reliably, the neck was loose and various other issues. Steve was able to clean the horn and get everything working again at a reasonable price. He also loosened up the action on the palm and side keys which were originally too stiff. He’s friendly and offers excellent customer service. The best in the business!
17. Flemmer Piano Services
Address: 1224 Lakewood Dr, Lodi, CA 95240 , Herald , California , United States
Joey has done an exceptional job on our antique piano’s restoration. He explained all steps thoroughly and was diligent and professional. He has also made recommendations for items to consider in the future to keep our piano in top working condition. I highly recommend Flemmer Piano Services!
Showed up on time and was extremely detailed with his work. I had no idea that these things were so complicated and involved. Dude was mashing the classics too while he worked filling the house with musical awesome.
Joey was very professional and educated me on how to care for my piano in the future. He also drove a good distance to help me out and was very friendly and easy to work with!
18. Starbucks

Great new location in Galt. Friendly and courteous service and the drinks are delicious.
Great customer service
Parking: Plenty of parking and tables and umbrellas outside.
Okay not my favorite
pues el barista no lo sirvio como en otros starbucks
Huge line and employee just talking
I didn’t pay almost $6 for a venti cup of ice I paid for a drink so if you can kindly not rip me off that would be great.
This is what I got with a shaken espresso. I was running late for a meeting and couldn’t go back in to get it fixed. It’s missing 1/4 of it and they put 5 pumps of syrup instead of 1.5. Yuk! Just threw it away . I go there 3x a week thanks a lot Starbucks! Just threw away $7
19. Lockout Music Studios
Address: 6056 Rutland Dr, Carmichael, CA 95608 , Herald , California , United States
NOT GONNA LIE: I was sketch AF when I 1st came ; mainly cause I was communicating via text. I came through twice to check out the property. But, I’m EXTREMELY happy w/ my office & how everything turned out.
Very supportive AND responsive whenever there is a question, problem or concern. Neighborhood is VERY quiet & u DEFINITELY get work done! I’m definitely gonna be here for a while!
D. Cal
We absolutely love Lockout Studios! The managers are super responsive to any asks we have. The prices are very fair. Everyone we’ve met around the studios has been very kind and the musician camaraderie is definitely there. It’s clean, security is good, can’t say enough about how awesome this place is.
Been here a few months and so far, so good. Super quick response times for any questions we’ve had, and anytime there’s been any sort of hiccup or problem, they’ve been on it right away. Rooms are not fully soundproof but they let you pretty much have free reign over customizing your space, so you can easily add more soundproofing. A/c and heat both work great, so the studios are always comfortable. Lots of outdoor lighting and cameras so you feel pretty safe there, no matter what time it is. The keyless locking system is great also. Overall, good sized and solid studio space, and the price can’t be beat.
Great small office’s. No hassles, clean area, friendly tenants.
Without a doubt I can say all the other reviews are lies because I’ve already rented from them the studios are not complete they’re not a full studio if you pay attention to your walls from top to bottom you’ll notice a gap either showing the outside or being able to hear to the other side because the Gap at the top while the units are decently priced some are very small while others are decent size I will admit the pricing was not necessarily fair but it was not bad either, as the old saying goes you get what you pay for there’s absolutely zero padding in between the walls so you can literally hear just about everything when I rented from them they had people living in the studios which is expressly forbidden and their contract, as well as the fact that I personally had experiences with hearing individual constantly daily beat his girlfriend and or wife as they are living in that unit daily, while I do have to give credit to the staff for being rather responsive there was never a time that I text and they did not get back to me within less than an hour however I cannot give this place more than two stars they were very lackluster and making sure that the trash and the area for the trash was taken care of even after myself and several other tenants offered to properly in case the garbage area as to make sure that garbage was properly being thrown away and not left on the trash 4 weeks at a time until they decided to pay for the garbage to come as well as they do not keep the maintenance on their bathrooms the bathrooms are disgusting I personally watched their so-called maintenance man and or their in house fix it guy dump a trash can without taking out the bag knowing full well that there was something wet and rotten in the bag simply based on the smell and instead he simply dumped out the trash and left the wet smelly bag inside the trash can and put it back in the bathroom and closes the door as if he didn’t know the smell would get trapped in the bathroom I will admit again the staff is responsive as well as courteous with the exception of one particular agent that works there by the name of Jennifer, and I would have to say overall other than the homeless people that gather around and hang out and sleep in the hallways by the bathroom my major issue with them would be if I am paying rent I’m not paying you to come look and check inside of my unit on a monthly basis however it is their property and they can set the rules but overall I’m definitely not a fan of paying rent to have my unit inspected on a monthly basis I pay my rent so that I can do what I please with inside of the guidelines that are set forth I don’t need to be monitored and or have people checking inside of my unit on a monthly basis however that is because they know that they had individuals living in certain units so they would have to go and check all of the units to make sure no one else was personally I feel as though that was a very big disrespect. Stay with me for a second and just imagine as an artist engineer or producer being in the studio in the middle of a studio session and on the door there’s a knock very hard as if the police are at your door and then the shout that screams management and then they come barging in without you even saying come in or give me a second to open the door they simply open the door and again if you’re in the process of recording or doing music that is very disruptive to the flow so I understand and I know full well that these individuals that are leaving good comments are lying simply because I was there the same time a lot of these people were there
20. Raphael Pazo, Ph.D., California Bagpiper – Music of Elegance and Distinction
a great musician and with a knowledge in playing the bagpipes. Always enjoy his excellent performances.
Dr. Raphael Pazo made a very difficult time for our family easier. From hiring him, to making arrange to for arrival at the Memorial Service. On top of that he played beautifully. It was a wonderful tribute to my late brother in law.
Rafael played multiple songs at my Fathers memorial service, closing with Amazing Grace. His playing was beautiful. He was very comforting to our family and was very accommodating around the service times. I would recommend Rafael for any engagement. Thank you again, Rafael for helping to make this a special moment.
Dr. Raphael Pazo performed with his Bagpipes for our Shamrock Festival before our banquet as well as during it. His performance was exceptionally nice. We will be inviting him back to our venue again next year!
