Shopping in the mornings I found there’s hardly anyone there it was great getting in and out. I only had one on to pick up I paid my bill picked up some coffee and was out in less than 15 minutes
It was Awesome
FOOD MADE FRESH
FRIENDLY STAFF. CLEAN ESTABLISHMENT.
My favorite Walmart.
They don’t carry a lot of things most super Wal-Mart’s carry. Kinda run down but friendly cashiers
I know mostly everyone who works there
Lame as always
This experience was horrible the sales person was one of the worst one’s I’ve ever dealt with also they had me drive over 30 miles just to say it’s not there after the app said it was.
I was totally disappointed and now have to keep driving around to find what I need.
I really wish there was more I could do..
If you don’t deal with people well why work in customer service. And even though it all the management would not even say anything to the sails person. And I can’t give her name
Because her nametag was backwards.. Gotta love walmart in the hood.
From a customer who spends plenty at Wal-Mart.
I found everything I needed there.
3. Highland Music
Address: 3000 Clairmont Ave, Birmingham, AL 35205 , Irondale , Alabama , United States
These guys are knowledgeable of just about any older, “classic” gear. There’s a bit of anything you might want and their stock is always changing. A cool place to check out!
This review is for Harold, I had dropped my guitar off at another shop in homewood and it sat for four weeks without getting done, I wanted a bone nut, saddle and set up, needless to say I picked it up from there and took it to highland, Harold got my guitar on Tuesday and gave it back on Thursday playing better than when it was brand new! Absolutely awesome work, awesome speed and he was very friendly and helpful through the entire process, all my guitars will be coming to him for any of my luthier needs!
It kind of feels like grandpa’s basement here, in a good way. Lots of interesting gear to browse through, plenty of it gently used and ready to be rocked again. There are some Strats hanging here that anyone would love to own, plenty of great options for tube amps, replacement speakers and even an eclectic assortment of used pedals that are worth picking through.
Pricing for everything is slightly higher than online for same items, BUT, you get to support a local business and take it home today. It’s the kind of place I’d stop in to a couple times a year if I lived here. Character.
Great selection of vintage guitars and amplifiers. New equipment also.
Owner was very helpful. I was looking for a pair of drum sticks. He was kind and explained that this was a shop. Occasionally may acquire drumming items. I appreciated his honesty and kindness. Purchased 2 pairs.
About what you’d expect. Pretentious, unhelpful, and offended that you’d dare shop in their overpriced thrift store. But they’ve been in business forever and they ain’t changing.
I left this store just a moment ago after being asked to leave because I had not yet made a purchase. I had originally intended to pick up a few packs of strings for my acoustic, now I’m glad I had not. I stopped by today with my friend who had told me about this store. He has been a customer of this store before and had always told me the staff here was friendly and that they have great service. We spent roughly 45 minutes in the store before the man at the counter, whom we had previously overheard talking to another customer about us saying, “What’s the deal with these two jokebags?” told us to get out of the store because we had not yet bought anything. We promptly left the store and I soon received a text from my friend saying that he had gone back inside to try to clear things up with the man that was working the counter and he told me that the man said he was not feeling well and is looking to close the store early. So if his goal is to minimize the business they get to close up early, he is doing very well.
As a local of BHM I’ve been to Highland Music many times over the last 10 years or so. They’ve always had an interesting selection of gear. You’ll see the usual flow of second-hand gear pass through. It seems like a popular place to sell your guitar or amp on consignment. Highland also has some neat vintage stuff. They have several vintage CBS era Strats hanging out behind the counter. They have always managed to have a few other vintage Fenders too. They even have a literal wall of vintage Fender Champ amps that include tweed, blackface, and silverface era examples. So why the low score you ask?
The problem with Highland music is the people working there consistently give customers a negative experience. These guys are unknowledgeable in the gear they carry-not the biggest deal. That would be easily forgiven if it weren’t for their habit of just making up stuff to sound smart when they don’t have an answer. What’s worse than this is their attitude toward customers. Don’t bother asking to play one of those cool vintage guitars. You will only be met with a snide remark about how you probably can’t afford it. Both myself and friends have experienced this kind of rude talk from Highland Music, and it’s honestly lead to our decision of willfully not spending our money there.
I do not intend on bashing this store. I am not an angry internet troll, and this is not that kind of post. I genuinely want to see Highland Music succeed. Despite the faults I have complained about, I think it is the coolest guitar store we have in BHM. I would love to see these sort of things change.
4. Zeomi Inc
Address: 1100 E Park Dr #100a, Birmingham, AL 35235 , Irondale , Alabama , United States
Great roomy air conditioned anitiques flea market. Booths were all well organized and clean. Lots of variety and reasonable pricing. I had a great first visit and look forward to going again! If you use a wheelchair, cart or scooter – this mall has more room than most and all smooth level floors!
A nice indoor market to locate unique finds.
Enjoyed browsing. Interesting collection of booths. However some boots seemed very disorganized and hard to look through. Overall though, a great time with my wife.
Huge space. Nice people.
Not impressed at all
Sort of like a big garage sale of ” stuff “. No real items of any value. Certainly not a quality antique store. The person working there was very rude and seemed most interested in looking at her cell phone.
Way too expensive. First time I’ve walked out of a antique mall without even finishing the store or buying anything. I probably won’t be back.
6. Art’s Music Shop, Inc
Address: 4647 US-280, Birmingham, AL 35242 , Irondale , Alabama , United States
Great place to go.Got my new clasical guitar there.
Everyone was not only friendly and helpful but extremely knowledgeable too! The person who helped me had a degree in music! (So much more than just a sales clerk.)
Helpful staff, decent prices, quality gear, what else do you want?
Very helpful but the instruments are pretty expensive
Nice; they’ll order in for u
Good. place to shop for all your. music. needs.
Friendly attentive staff, but not a single guitar cleaning product of any kind except what they had open for their own use. Don’t really understand that… Part of owning an instrument is maintenance
Stay away. They are way overpriced.
If you drop your instrument off for an estimate get it in writing with a signature from the manager that they will not work on it.
I walked in to pick up my trombone from an estimate, started walking out and was told I owed money. For what? I did not authorize anything.
It’s too bad this shop is the only option in Birmingham. Check out Bailey Brothers to see if they have what you need first.
7. Redbox
Address: 1600 Montclair Rd, Irondale, AL 35210 , Irondale , Alabama , United States
Bailey Brothers is one very well-staffed and well-stocked retail music store. The staff is knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. From beginner to professional instruments of the highest quality, they have perhaps the most thoughtful selection in Birmingham. Also for many years they are who I have chosen to service my guitars.
I went in to buy a Keyboard and walked out as a very Happy customer! Customer service was very friendly and knowledgeable as well! Ty Bailey Brothers for making my passion in music become a reality! Highly Recommended!
Great experience at Bailey Brothers Music. Highly recommended.
This place is awesome, need customer service? DONE! Need a repair? DONE! Need to place an order? DONE! The only thing I did not like was the lack of extended range instruments. You will not be finding fanned fret, 28 fret, tap guitar, etc. You want those go to WARR guitars or order them off of a musicians website.
Good selection of musical equipment. Be prepared because they strictly enforce the muzzle mandate inside. They make you wear masks.
It was my first time in the store and I had an excellent experience. David was very helpful and friendly as well as the other staff present. The online site lacks a lot of the guitars they have in stock because they get new guitars a lot so I would advise actually going into the store to see their wide selection.
Dishonest, and disrespectful. While I’m aware they have an “all sales final” on used gear policy, it is their responsibility to properly inspect the gear they take in and not sell something that is damaged internally (in my case, a guitar amp). Idiot salesman also had a smug grin on his face the whole time my brother and I were having to deal with it (all 5-6 hours) and was making snooty comments back and forth. In a nut shell they sold me a dead amp and then laughed in my face about it. If this is how your business treats customers, don’t expect to be a business for long. I attempted a purchase with Bailey Brothers about 8 years ago. Was not a pleasant experience. This one wasn’t either. Rest assured, that’s it. I will not be back.
Update: Hey the owner called me just to prove they really do not care about customers. Tried to minimize what happened, and basically acted exactly like Keith did. Also a robotic “I apologize but we’re not going to do anything to fix it” does not count as rectifying anything. Gee wonder why the Southside store closed! Oh yeah and if you have a bad experience with them and they don’t own up to it they’ll do like any typical teenager does and tries to badmouth you on Facebook, then stalk your page. Very mature. Screenshots are great though aren’t they?
PS: Oh and buddy, if I were mad and desperate to pay my rent, then why in the heck did I buy a $700 amp from you? Nice try.
This place is as good as, if not better than, Guitar Center. But this one man that works there is not the friendliest and makes me and my music buddy never wanna come again… I was gonna buy at least $20-$60 of stuff, and my buddy was gonna get his guitar worked on, but we decided against it after our experience today.
My friend and I were playing our guitars together at moderate volumes. No louder than the other customers that passed through. Our volume knobs probably were set around 1. This rude clerk guy came up to us and told us “turn it down, there are customers in here”. When there was maybe 1 other guy in the guitar room at most. What are we, trash? Are we not customers?
Though to be fair, there was a little kid who sat behind us who was louder than both of us combined, and he was tremolo picking the most random nonsensical annoying noise (future shredder?), but he should’ve told the kid to turn down—not us. We both turned our amps off because he was rude the last time we were in the store and we were pretty annoyed at this point. But the kid turned his amp down and continued the random picking and the dude immediately came back and said “hey, okay, turn it off, that’s enough for today” and took the guitar from the kid. The rudest music store clerk we’ve ever encountered. There’s another guy who is super nice that works there who let us turn the volume up—at least 2 or 3 times what we did today—and test every amp in the store. We bought a $2,000 setup from the nice guy in the past, but this rude guy would probably kick us out of the store before we could make a purchase. I didn’t catch his name, but he’s average height, blondish, his hair is thinning, and he had a short beard. A nicer worker told us he’s been there 3 years, though I’m not sure how he’s lasted that long. He’ll probably follow you around like you’re a thief and ask if he can help you 8 times like he did to us the last time we came in the store simply to buy a cable.
I explained to them thoroughly what I needed and they sold me the opposite! It all about sells and f**k the customers needs! Stay away from the southside location!
9. King’s Home Thrift
Address: 1569 Cooper Hill Rd, Irondale, AL 35210 , Irondale , Alabama , United States
This thrift store is a hidden gem!! A great selection of clothing and nicknacks at great prices. My fiancé and my Halloween costume (Tiger woods and John Daly) mainly came from here this year!
Awesome clean great bargains and great selection in all departments, nice staff as well
Nice clean store. Easy to find things.
Great place.
Good selection of items.
good customer service. Some items are marked fair for a thrift store and some are marked way to high.
I used to love this store. Popped in for the first time in a couple of years this week.
I have NEVER been treated so poorly by employees in my entire life. Definitely my last time shopping this thrift store.
Didn’t really find anything
Employees are always rude and responding to phone messages in between customers in line..phones are an issue in EVERY WORK PLACE!!.Love the products thou!!
10. Lovelady Thrift Store
Address: 7720 Ludington Ln, Irondale, AL 35210 , Irondale , Alabama , United States
The staff has been super friendly and helpful everytime I’ve been in. I have found great deals, lots of nice things to find for great prices.
To expensive for a thrift store
Depends on what you want and when you shop like any thrift store. Very big floor area so I suspect a lot of choices with regular turnover. Saw plenty that might have worked for me but not THE thing. Good prices. And they hello load?!
Great place where you never know what kind of stuff will find save lots of money buying used donated items some new or very little use
I’m retired so I though I would donate about 20 of my nicest dress shirts – had them laundered at Kay Cleaners, put on hangers and in plastic bags. I asked the lady at “donations” to handle them carefully , to which she promptly wadded them all up and stuffed them on a cart. She was also rude so I will not be back. As in forever.
Those Prices Are To Much Expecially The On Shoes And Other Clothing So Disappointed
Ok

I took a 2008 Gibson LP in for a level and re-crown, they did a great job like brand new plays like butter. Will definitely be using them again. It is great to know we have a great instrument repair in Birmingham, no need to go to Atlanta or Nashville. Thanks!
Never been there but bought a superb concertina from him 10 years ago.
It is not often that I walk in a music and have have the owner show so much kindness to me. I want to encourage anyone looking for a musical instrument to make sure you go to Homewood Music. They are great folks and will treat you right.. Mr. Tedrow was wonderful. Thanks
Friendly atmosphere and lots of instruments.
Good product, Good service.
I’ve never dealt with someone so rude over the phone. The owner tried to guilt me with sarcasm and acted like victim when I questioned a price. Full story: I asked to order a cello string. All was going well (owner answered questions about speed of shipping and availability of the string), but then he quoted a price ($81) that was far above what other shops charge. I said respectfully that “I’ve purchased the string for $45 at other walk-in shops” and he became sarcastic and argumentative with me, claiming he was “holding my hand” through the process, and said “Well, I have to pay $35 for this string so what do YOU think is fair for ME to make? $15? What is 35 + 15, huh? Ohhh, maybe $50 is more than you can afford?” A simple, “well this is my price” would have been fine as a response from him, but I felt disrespected so I hung up and decided I’m never going to spend a dime Homewood Musical Instrument Co. I advise everyone else to steer clear of this shop and the guy who owns it.
14. Habitat ReStore
Address: 7952 Crestwood Blvd, Irondale, AL 35210 , Irondale , Alabama , United States
It’s a place to live. Better than being on the street. Wish they had month to month.
They have alot of good materialist a really good prices.you can save lots of money if can spend a little time looking around the store.
Wow, there is all kinds of stuff in the store. Jam-packed and actually hard to check it all out there is so much inside and outside. May be some good prices on small hardware store type items here. You could get some good deals on flooring if they have what you want in enough quantity. Check prices at big box stores before you come in.
Couldn’t find what I wanted there but just cuz I can’t find it it’s because I didn’t have the measurements that I needed to get what I need it
Love this place, but they can be pricey. What’s up with these second hand stores. Even if it has been donated you are not Lowe’s or Home Depot. See you soon.
Retail pricing. Should be deals. Way to high
FOR THE 5TH TIME!! The employees follow me and my children around looking for us to shoplift, I guess. What a waste of my brain power. Such smart elecs when you ask them for help. I hope there will be atleast 4 more of these salvage locations to shop from. My goodness. I JUST bought a house. What do I look like going to jail?
1 star only because I had to give one to review! Do not try to donate they blew us off the 1st time. The second won’t take anything because the leather on the 2000.00 some had a few scratches!
15. Foxtrot Recordings
Address: 806 78th St S, Birmingham, AL 35206 , Irondale , Alabama , United States
Excellent customer service! They were so helpful with fixing my son’s guitar and went above and beyond to make sure his guitar was fixed and tuned! Adina and Tim both helped us so much and were especially kind!
18. Mason Music
Address: 3187 Cahaba Heights Rd, Birmingham, AL 35243 , Irondale , Alabama , United States
Best place for music lessons! Teachers are fun, smart and genuinely care about your growth as a musician. Plus, they sell my favorite guitars: reverend and they are the only dealer in the area
Our son has enjoyed voice lessons with Ryon for about a year and recently added piano/chording to the lesson mix. He looks forward to lessons and is building great confidence. Thanks Mason Music CH!
Avery loves her voice lessons with Tania!!
19. Office Depot
Address: 1632 Montclair Rd, Birmingham, AL 35210 , Irondale , Alabama , United States
Employees are ready and willing to assist. Questions are answered ; suggestions made!
Always a good experience at this Office Depot
Great staff and products, found exactly what I was looking for and the cashier/sales rep was friendly and helpful.
Rude staff
Find most everthing you need Here
Great location. Usually very clean and orderly and usually easy to find most things. Not easy to find someone to answer questions if you cannot find something, however. Cashier line usually seems to take a bit longer than it should.
I Spoke to an employee by the name of Josh in the printing department. He was extremely sarcastic over the phone and he also was not customer friendly. I live one mile form this store location and I will be traveling to another location that provides better customer service.
Placed order 1 month in advance. Fail to provide order by due date or call to explain…. If you have a large order DONT USE THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!
Ugh filthy. You have a DM come through once in a while? And he/she is ok with all the trash on the floors? And all over the shelves? And that the employees talked over me about how awful the managers Jason and Ed are. Absolutely an awful experience. Completely unprofessional and very dark and dirty. I will never set foot in another one. This is why Amazon is whooping your face.
