I went in to buy a ukulele. Margo was friendly and knowledgeable.
My brother bought a guitar here. While he was taking lessons they realized part of the guitar was defective, and exchanged it right on the spot even a few weeks later. Excellent service.
This store usually has my sax needs.
Good music instructors, great service and great staff.
Music instructors are the best.
they were nice and informative, but i returned something and they opted to send me a check. It’s been over a month and i still haven’t gotten my money back
No ukulele’s or song books for ukulele’s even thou they advertise that they have them.
Buyer beware!! They charge you for lessons in advance! Staff up front can be RUDE! They give you give you misinformation and it costs you!
5. The Music Bureau
Address: 1 New London Rd, Salem, CT 06420 , Montville Center , Connecticut , United States
The people here are friendly, knowledgeable, supportive and very helpful. I have been taking bass guitar lessons here and am absolutely amazed with my progress. Besides the one-on-one lessons, I also enjoy their group sessions where we get to learn and practice songs together. I also bought a couple instruments, strings, amplifier and some accessories from them at great prices. If you want to take lessons on any musical instrument, or want to rent or buy any musical instrument, I highly recommend the Music Bureau, conveniently located at Salem Four Corners.
Great lessons for all ages, good gear, super friendly teachers.
Great lessons, friendly environment, incredible music. Highly recommend.
This business has changed hands a few times. But still has a great selection of core instruments and accessories. Also offer lessons.

Fantastic hardware store! From old to new stuff. Everybody’s so very friendly and helpful.
Great place!!
Best selection of niche hardware in the area
Super helpful with any project you have.
They have everything hardware.
Doors, windows, screens, parts, Hardware, hardware, hardware.
Did I mention hardware?
Always good service. Generally have what I want. And more.
They close at 1pm on Saturday not 4pm
My experience was not positive and as a woman I wish I hadn’t had been afraid to speak up for myself. I should have went to Home Depot or Lowe’s or even Ace and just left but I had to much anxiety by then to leave but I won’t ever go back in there. I got ripped off and ignored and frankly I was to stupid so I don’t blame them for me not knowing better. Just if you’re a woman you may want to think twice about going here they do not want to help you.
Carla knew my friend personally from a previous job they worked at together, and the first thing she said to her when we were shopping here was “Well, if it isn’t one of my worst employees.”
Uh…good to see you too?
Good service and very helpful. Be sure to grab a bag of popcorn.
8. Guitar Center
Address: 351 N Frontage Rd Space F-3, New London, CT 06320 , Montville Center , Connecticut , United States
Great place. My grandson needed strings for guitar
Excellent service!
The staff was very friendly and helpful and I found exactly the equipment I was looking for – on sale mo less!
It’s a great place to go if you need your guitar setup or worked on. Eric does a fantastic job and he doesn’t break the bank. Plenty of awesome guitars to choose from plus drums and keyboards. Lots of amplifiers. Definitely a place for beginners and professionals alike.
Very expensive,but has great items
Must be corporate thinking but if you go back a few years ago the had a good selection and quite a bit of used equipment. What happened.
This place sucks
Customer service was not good. I walked in not knowing where to find the gift I was going to buy. Looked around finally asked someone for help handed them a paper with what I needed he walked around the store for a while to 4 different spots handed me the item then walked away without a word. I went to the counter to pay. No one was there. Took a few minutes for him to return rang upy order without looking up. Seemed annoyed I was there.
I was the only customer at 8 pm. Three employees – two were chatting to each other. The manager pointed me toward the drum room and went back to practicing his ukulele. Many items had no price label; the one I wanted turned out to be mislabeled. I couldn’t reach items because there were stacks of boxes in front of the display. When I asked for help, the manager was impatient to get away. I left and went to Music & Arts, where I found a better tambourine for more than $10 less.

Address: 28-32 Talman St, Norwich, CT 06360 , Montville Center , Connecticut , United States
A great local business that always has everything I’m looking for. Would highly recommend.
Great store! The owners are super helpful and friendly. Good selection of instruments, accessories, and sheet music. Their service can’t be beat.
I arrived when they opened which was on time and prompt. (Also, the only store in the area that opens this early! LIFE SAVER!) The woman there was EXTREMELY knowledgeable on all the equipment in the store. She knew exactly what I needed and when she didn’t have a full 10 pack of reeds, she made one for me. The prices were fair and I had the option of purchasing pre-owned items at a lower rate! She also had a little dog that she let my younger son pet while we were there. As we were leaving, someone was coming to bring in their unused instruments for the buy back program. Polite, fast transaction, educated, and helpful. Parking was directly in front of the building, easy in, easy out. I will be returning here for all my kids instrumental needs!
Terrible customer service. Took my flute to get repaired and instead of just simply fixing what needed to be done to it I was told I shouldn’t have bought an off brand flute. This was all I could afford at the time (as a teenager). I am looking to invest in a new one but honestly it is no ones job to criticize the instrument I have. I waited for the repair to be done and called 3 different times on it. The repair person got sick which is understandable. When I called the last time they said it was finished and I asked why they never called me to let me know they said that I said I was going to come in regardless. Which is true. But still does not explain why no one called me. Overall a bad experience. Was treated very poorly and will not be going there again.
Absolutely awful owners were nasty and they charged way too much for a simple repair just go to music and arts its easier and cheaper
Simple advise dont scream at your costumers to get business
15. Tracy’s Tunes
Address: 111 Lebanon Ave, Colchester, CT 06415 , Montville Center , Connecticut , United States
Comes up for violin lessons, but they no longer have a strings instructor. I asked them to call me about other places I could go to and they never did. Not good for violin lessons of course, but taking piano was fun.
16. Second chance consinments & treasures
Address: 1100 Norwich-New London Turnpike, Montville, CT 06382 , Montville Center , Connecticut , United States
I’ve visited this store two times now and on both occasions came home with multiple items! The prices are great and they only sell clean, well cared for clothes and items. My mother and I will continue stopping in every few weeks or so to check out new merch. Oh and they also have certain color tags on sale each day/week so you can really find some amazing deals. =) very happy to have a new consignment shop in Montville!!
Found some really cute pieces for my home at decent prices. I check back every few weeks for new items and always leave with something that fits my home. The lady is always nice and we have good conversation at checkout.
I don’t understand the bad reviews. The lady running it was so kind and helpful. She took the time to chat with me and help me and my daughter out. We will be back! Thank you for being so kind in a world that’s not so kind anymore
Fix your hours online please to not cause wasted gas and time for your customers.
Don’t bother going in. Took a long ride to go to this store and there was a sign on the door “closing at 2 today”. So I guess they make up their own hours. Not dependable
Montville should be ASHAMED to have this place as a business in town. The ladies that run it/own it have the WORST attitude are rude and not helpful.
They change hours and throw your stuff in the tiny rooms and expect you to find it when your time is up for consignment. They have rude comments when we went to pick up the items she said there is no need to call ahead. With a 2 year old they didn’t even help pick the items which are SPREAD everywhere. The fire dept should also look into this place as a real hazard with stuff everywhere. I feel bad for the other business in that plaza with someone like that in there. As bad as times are they don’t need people that nasty in there. They don’t even let you pick up your items on weekend and you only have 3 days after your 60 days. Well that would be ok but seeing they are never open that gives you one day. You can see what they do, they do all these things so they end up keeping your items and keep the full price amount.
17. GIBSON’S MUSIC & MORE
Address: 39 Wedgewood Dr, Jewett City, CT 06351 , Montville Center , Connecticut , United States
Owners are very nice….love the small music store feel….all the guitars were in tune that is totally awesome…. definitely recommend this place
Great people very friendly and great deals
What a wonderful store and staff! The gentlemen who took care of us was a very nice, polite and friendly man. We had a very nice conversation and bought a BEAUTIFUL BANJO at a GREAT PRICE! He gave my son great tips for using finger picks. We will be recommending this music store to everyone we know.
Inconvenient hours of operation. Ended up buying a used guitar elsewhere. Otherwise my phone call was promptly returned and the woman I spoke with was very kind and friendly.
18. Spindrift Guitars
Address: 300 State St, New London, CT 06320 , Montville Center , Connecticut , United States
A real gem of a shop! Corey and Whit both do fantastic repair work (guitars and amplifiers respectively) and while the selection of guitars isn’t huge, there are always a number of interesting things hanging on the wall. Despite having many local repair people to choose from, I drive an hour to visit their shop and access their expertise.
Best guitar shop around. I trust these guys with all my guitar needs…and they are many!
I bought a beautiful Fender Resonator from Corey and Emilio a couple months ago. Not only were they encouraging of my late start to learning guitar, but they even bought the guitar back for a fair price when I failed to become the next Jimi Hendrix!! I’ll be back…I actually miss playing more than I thought I would…perhaps sooner than later.
They really know their guitars.
Shop owner very helpful with advice on adjusting the action on my mandolin. It is specifically a guitar shop.
Nice small ma and pa guitar shop
I brought in vintage Gibson Les Paul custom for a Re fret and they completely ruined it there was surface scratches ,chips in the fret board the frets were un even and buzzed. After 4 attempts bringing the guitar back to the store with the problems only half way fixed every time or even new problems I just cut my loses and brought my guitar to a real professional if you want it done right I do not recommend bringing your guitar here for major repairs
19. Caruso Piano Gallery
Address: 94 State St, New London, CT 06320 , Montville Center , Connecticut , United States
I called Caruso Piano Gallery to obtain and verify some information I’d received about a Boston piano at Steinway Piano Gallery in Nashville, TN. I spoke with Larry at Caruso. I couldn’t have been more satisfied with his honest advise and suggestions. I knew my student’s parent and I had been deceived by the information we were given about the Boston GP 156 listed as NEW. It was NOT new and had been used for a major piano event. It had scratches on the cabinetry and rust on 6-7 copper strings. It was manufactured between 2014-15. As you said, “Deceat starts at the top.” I regret that Caruso is in CT and not TN. Thank you, Larry for your honest support. You had nothing financially to gain.
Fantastic company and group of people working here! I have purchased a rebuilt Steinway baby grand. From purchase to delivery to after service, everything was just perfect. Brian especially helped me out from the beginning till the end. Even after the purchase, when I needed some help, Brian was there to answer and help me resolve issues. Highly recommend Caruso Piano Gallery for anyone looking for a beautiful piano.
What an incredible purchase experience! Huge shout out to Richard and the rest of the team at Caruso Piano Gallery.
Before I purchased, I called with many questions about this piano that Richard took time to answer immediately. He provided knowledge and opinions when asked.
Once the piano was purchased, it arrived at my doorstep in about half of the time we discussed on the phone! The team that delivered was quick, professional, and thorough.
There was one minor issue in the piano when it arrived (squeaky sustain). Richard personally/quickly took time to make a video explaining how to fix it. A little WD-40 does the trick!
5/5 stars no question!
I went to their store and also called them multiple times showing interest in one of their pianos. Despite the fact I showed interest and called/messaged multiple times on a piano, that piano was sold to an online buyer. There was no follow-up or a courtesy call to let me know that the product I was eyeing was gone or was about to be sold.
Nevertheless, I think that they have a good variety and a great knowledge base on pianos. I wish they were a little bit more responsive and courteous as buying a piano is a big purchase and takes time and thought.
EDIT: After my initial review, Caruso Piano contacted me and let me know that they have not reached out to me due to not getting a piano that was comparable to what I was looking for. Which is understandable. I truly appreciate them reaching out to me. I have to write that I learned a whole lot about piano buying from them when I first went to their store. I wish them good luck and hope they continue to be successful as a local business.
UPDATE October 5 2018: Richard Caruso promptly called me the day after I posted the review below. He apologized again, and very willingly reimbursed me for my travel expenses. I feel this was the ethical and right thing to do, and am glad that he made things right with me.
Original review: I flew in from Chicago to try out a Steinway B I had on deposit. The staff knew of my travel plans, and were very hospitable and welcoming. The piano, however, was noticeably out of tune on my arrival. While more accomplished pianists might not have seen that as an issue, it completely stopped me from getting excited about the piano. No sale for them, no new Steinway for me.
They were apologetic and realized their mistake when I pointed this out, but were unable to get the piano tuned while I was there.
This is a shop with perhaps good intentions, but they completely dropped the ball in this instance. I’m writing this review because I don’t want this to happen to anyone else.
I purchased a used U1 3 years ago from Carusos.
Please be aware: these are GREY MARKET pianos. They were originally built and sold in the Asian market. You will have proof when you remove the knee board and see the holder for the lease agreement. And due to that fact, the wood of the pianos is dried to standards for Asia. Not the U.S. or Northeast U.S.
I do like the piano, BUT I and my piano technician are having a heck of a time keeping the damper pedal from squeaking BADLY.
I had the piano saver system installed almost immediately. It has helped the piano hold tune very well.
But because this instrument was not built to the specifications of an American instrument (or North America) it is expanding very badly from the humidity.
I have a dehumidifier in the room with the piano, no heat or doors or windows near it. And I have my technition here AGAIN trying to shave down the knee board to try and eliminate this terrible groan/squeek.
My opinion? Buy a piano through a local piano tuner/technition or through a referral from a tuner tech. If you are going to purchase one of these grey market instruments bring your tuner with you. Pay them for their time and have them tune the instrument you choose BEFORE you give Carusos your money.
20. Tumbleweeds
Address: 325 Main St, Niantic, CT 06357 , Montville Center , Connecticut , United States
Really a great place for used classic records. Has nice jewellery and a good selection of clothes for those of you that like 60’s or 70’s style sundresses. You can get gifts and other neat things. Really nice break from the beach tourist shops. Staff and owner are really nice and helpful. Pay with cash to avoid credit/debit service charge.
A bit expensive but cool store either way.
A little pricey for used records, but almost almost always there are real treasures in the bins for record collectors!!
Purchased a used record labeled “VG” (very good) which ended up having skips. Wouldn’t trust this store’s ratings but their selection is not terrible.
I love to shop, but cant even buy a piece….Not for your middle class income. Too expensive for me!
Says they open at 10:30, figured I’d stop in while I had some time in between jobs, it’s 10:47 and they’re not open and no sign of them opening at all, lights off no staff around. Won’t be wasting my time to come back here again
